Meet The Luka Mozaika, A World Record Contender

June 19, 2022 - The Port of Mosaics (Luka Mozaika) project aims to become the world's longest recorded mosaic walkway. This innovative Luka Mozaika project can be explored in Vela Luka, a coastal town situated at the very western end of the Island of Korčula. Currently, at forty metres in length, Luka Mozaika has already been laid and is still an ongoing project which is growing steadily. The recent global coronavirus pandemic slowed down the Vela Mozaika project and even halted it for some time, but it has now regained full motion once again. The project was started back in…

Fancy a Cool Drink? Early Tourism and the Ice Caves of Biokovo

June 19, 2022 - Before household appliances became a thing, keeping drinks cold used to be a much more complicated endeavour. Meet the ice caves of Biokovo. Located in Dalmatia between the rivers of Cetina and Neretva, Biokovo is the second-highest mountain range in Croatia. It's a natural border between the coast and the Inland Dalmatia, and close to 200 m2 of its area is protected as a Nature Park. The majestic range is sometimes described as the mountain that has 'its roots in the sea and a head crowned with lightning'. Its peak, St. Jura (St. George) stands at…

Diocletian's Dream: a Stunning VR Experience Bringing Split History to Life

June 19, 2022 - How to combine modern technology and ancient heritage in a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Check out the incredible Diocletian's Dream VR experience, bringing Diocletian's Palace to life as never before.  How to bring a an ancient monument to life for all ages? Diocletian's Palace is one of my favourite places in Croatia. Superbly located on the gorgeous Split waterfront, it is a vibrant living Roman city within a city than breathes history on every corner.  Walking tours of the palace are among the most popular activities in Split, and yet over the years, I have lost…

Croatian Cruise Traffic Makes Decided Return in Post-Pandemic Era

June the 18th, 2022 - Despite being the subject of endless complaints before the global coronavirus pandemic struck and forced the industry to a halt, Croatian cruise traffic is making a marked comeback as we approach the height of the summer tourist season. Croatian cruise tourism was an enormous ecological issue up and down the coast, but the vast majority of (understandable) complaints and issues arose from Croatia's tourist Mecca - the southernmost city of Dubrovnik. The Pearl of the Adriatic felt plagued by these giant floating cities which pollute the waters and cause enormous infrastructure issues for the entire…

Beyond the Dubrovnik Walls: 4. The Island of Sipan

June 17, 2022 - Continuing the new TCN series, Beyond the Dubrovnik Walls, yet another magnificent reason to explore beyond the historic old town UNESCO World Heritage Site - the island of Sipan.  So you think Croatia's islands are more or less the same? It can be hard for a tourist looking at the map trying to differentiate between all the different islands, to see which one might be the most suitable. But delve a little deeper, and you can find some rather extraordinary things - the oldest public theatre in Europe (Hvar), the oldest cricket club in mainland Europe…

Beyond the Dubrovnik Walls: 3. The Island of Lokrum

June 16, 2022 - Continuing the new TCN series exploring beyond the Dubrovnik walls, an escape from the crowds to one of the top treasures of the Adriatic - the island of Lokrum.  For those who tell me that Dubrovnik is just a 2-day destination and that there is nothing really to do outside the old town, I smile. I don't think I have ever come across a destination in Croatia which has so much more to offer than the stereotype it possesses. There are so many things to do in and around Dubrovnik that I would argue a week…

Beyond the Dubrovnik Walls: 2. The Island of Lopud

June 16, 2022 - Dubrovnik is perceived to be a 2-day destination with everything concentrated inside the UNESCO old town, but it is so much more than that. Find out what, in the second of a new TCN series - Beyond the Dubrovnik Walls. Meet the island of Lopud.  Seeing things with a fresh pair of eyes is always instructive. Almost a year ago, at the conclusion of the Dubrovnik Nomads-in-Residence programme, A Dutch digital nomad gave an initial presentation to the mayor, tourist board, media and public on his group's findings after 4 weeks as guests of the city.…

Croatia’s Cupid Island: Galešnjak

June 16, 2022 - Galešnjak, a small island in the shape of a heart, is located in the Pašman Channel as it continuously provides a sanctuary for couples seeking moments of connection. It hides amongst Zadar's archipelago and is surrounded by crystal blue waters of the Adriatic Sea.  “Cupid’s Island”, more famously known as the “Island of Love”, was originally spotted by a 19th-century cartographer working for Napoleon. However, the recognition it received was all thanks to Google Earth and the photograph it published in 2008 – depicting the island's prised heart shape. The awareness of the idyllic sanctuary from the…
