ZAGREB, Dec 21, 2020 - The Croatian Tourist Board (HTZ) had planned to reopen its office in Madrid, which was closed five years ago, but because of the coronavirus, that office will not be opened these days as had been planned. "Subsequent to circumstances caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Croatian Tourist Board has temporarily deferred implementing some of its planned activities for 2020," HTZ said in a response to HINA. "The continuation of activities related to opening an HTZ office in Spain will be considered after the necessary conditions are created, which primarily depends on further developments with the pandemic in the…

Visit Portugal, a Lesson in Promotion of Remote Worker Tourism

December 20, 2020 - Tourism promotion in the corona era has been a challenge. One tourist board has been doing things rather well - lessons from Portugal.  Is it worth even promoting tourism during a pandemic, with future travel so uncertain? This year has brought unprecedented challenges to the tourism industry, from event management to marketing and promotion.  While many destinations chose to remain quiet or engage in campaigns such as #CroatiaLongDistanceLove, the best Croatian destination for 2020 promotion in my opinion was Zagreb, and the Croatian capital responded brilliantly to the twin disasters of the pandemic and earthquake with…

How Official Croatian Tourism Info is Still Failing Tourists

December 20 - Providing accurate, helpful and up-to-date official Croatian tourism info should not be that hard in a country where tourism accounts for 20% of GDP, but this is the Kingdom of Accidental Tourism. It took me quite a few years of living in Croatia until I figured it out. There was always something not quite right but I could never put my finger on it until an email exchange a few years ago withe the Croatian National Tourist Board.  I was being an annoying journalist again, coming up with some common-sense suggestion on something to improve tourism. The…

Digital Nomads Helping Split Winter Tourism this Year

December 19, 2020 - The numbers are in for November - and they aren't totally grim when considering Split winter tourism.  Believe it or not, there is some turnover in tourism this year, reports Slobodna Dalmacija. Queues of 8 Hours at Bregana Border Entering Croatia from Slovenia

December 19, 2020 - With the festive season almost here, huge queues appear on Croatia's borders, with the current wait at the main Bregana border now 8 hours.  I haven't left the house for over two weeks, and the more I look at the big bad world out there, the less I want to leave the sofa any time soon.  With many things closed due to the pandemic, and inter-county restrictions coming at midnight on Tuesday, there is less incentive to move anyway.  But there are plenty of people with plans to head home for Christmas to family in Croatia,…

December 19, 2020 - At the Pula Tourist Board's assembly, the rebalance of the financial and activity plan for this year and the plans for 2021 was adopted.  Glas Istre reports that with COVID-19 and all measures in June, the first rebalance was passed, assuming only 15 percent of last year's overnight stays in the peak season. But tourism traffic started already in June, and in ten months, 935 thousand overnight stays were realized, which is 41 percent of last year's figures. Compared to the previous year, the highest percentage of overnight stays was realized by weekenders (96 percent), followed by…
