Photo of the Day: The Beginnings

The Vela Spila (large cave) is located above the Vela Luka port town on the western end of Korčula Island. It is easily accessible from the centre of town and around 40 metres long and equally wide.

There is a mention of the cave in the Korčula statute dating back to the 15th century. Excavations found remains of human activity from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age. The remains in the lower layers have been dated between 13.500 and 12.600 years B.C., while radiocarbon dating has shown human activity going back 20.000 years.
