If you fancy seeing bears up close, there is a better place to do so than the average zoo - visit Kuterevo in the Lika mountain region. The Bear Refuge was founded in 2002. In this moment eight bears are hosted, all of them having lost their mothers during their first year of life and thus having no chance of survival in the wild.
In Croatia there are around 1000 bears in the wild. The bears living in Croatia are part of the Dinaric population of some 2800 bears. This is the second largest population in Central Europe.
