The Cities of Croatia: Osijek

Far away from the Adriatic coast in North-East Croatia close to the Serbian and Hungarian borders is the historic city of Osijek, home to the oldest brewery in Croatia and the first city in the region to have trams.

Dominating the skyline is Osijek Cathedral, with its three million bricks, whose construction was overseen by one of the city’s most famous sons, Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmeyer. It is exactly 90 metres high, the same height as the city itself is above sea level. It is the second tallest church in South-East Europe after Zagreb, and there is a replica in Cologne a little smaller at 80 metres.
