Happy Birthday Liberland: The President and the Croatian MP on the Danube

By 15 April 2017

The Second Anniversary Liberland Conference began on April 14, 2017.

It is two years since Czech citizen Vit Jedlicka planted a flag in an unclaimed 7km2 piece on land on the left hand bank of the Danube, claiming the territory for the Free State of Liberland under a law called 'terra nullius'.

It was a story which made international headlines and was dismissed as a joke. And yet...

Two years and almost half a million applications for citizenship later, self-proclaimed President Jedlicka is once again in the region, surrounded by supporters, idealists and just a little financial backing, holding the second anniversary conference on the founding of his state.

TCN attended last year's VERY surreal conference, and family Easter commitments sadly prevented attendance this year, but far from being a joke two years ago, the Liberland cause is gaining strength. And admirers.

It would have been unthinkable two years ago to find a Croatian politician supporting the new state, and yet two year's later, arguably Croatia's most controversial politician currently has been sailing down the Danube with the President - destination Liberland. Ivan Pernar is also a keynote speaker at the conference - the schedule of which you can see here.

While we can't be at the conference this year, we are following events and will bring you a full report shortly.
