ZAGREB, September 21, 2018 - President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović will travel to the United States next week to attend a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, the president's advisers announced on Friday.
While in New York, she will conduct bilateral meetings with several world leaders as well as meet with representatives of the Croatian community in America.
During her six-day stay in the USA, the president will also travel to Washington as a guest of local non-governmental organisations and institutions.
The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly comprising 193 member states was convened on 18 September. Calling on world leaders to come to the high-level session, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, "Be ready to be bold and ready to forge solutions for our global challenges." "At a time of fragmentation and polarization, the world needs this Assembly to show the value of international cooperation," Guterres said opening the UN session on Tuesday.
Grabar-Kitarović will meet on the margins of the session with Guterres and the presidents of Turkey, Ukraine, Lebanon, Panama, Cuba, Angola, Ghana, Namibia, Kenya, Paraguay and Kosovo as well as with the king of Jordan, the Vietnamese prime minister and Russia's foreign minister.
She will also attend several high-level plenary meetings, including a peace summit to be held in honour of the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela.
On Friday, she will be a guest at the Brookings Institute in Washington where she will hold a lecture on Croatia's contribution to transatlantic ties and solidarity. She will also attend a closed panel discussion to be organised by the Women's Impact Network, which promotes the role of women in the world.
