HDZ Split over Istanbul Convention Ratification

ZAGREB, March 12, 2018 - Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) political secretary and MP Davor Ivo Stier believes that it would be irresponsible and harmful, both for the HDZ and for the development of Croatian democracy, to ask HDZ MPs to vote for the Istanbul Convention as that would mean reducing or marginalising Christian democracy in the HDZ, and that disputes surrounding the convention cannot be bridged over with interpretive statements.

Plenković Denies He Will Run for European Commission President

ZAGREB, March 12, 2018 - Prime Minister and HDZ party leader Andrej Plenković on Monday dismissed media reports that he would run for President of the European Commission, saying that it was his job to be Croatia's prime minister, and noting that a majority in the HDZ leadership did not see gender ideology in the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, the so-called Istanbul convention.

Prime Minister: Istanbul Convention Will Be Ratified

ZAGREB, March 9, 2018 - Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Friday that he understood the sensitivity of some social groups regarding the Istanbul convention which, he said, for him "is primarily a convention that should promote national mechanisms for protection against violence against women and domestic violence" and he believes that the parliament will ratify the document.

Prime Minister Accuses Critics of LNG Terminal of Populism

ZAGREB, March 9, 2018 – Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Friday that some political stakeholders, primarily the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the MOST party, "are now signing a different tune" about the future LNG terminal on the Krk island, saying that as a state and a society we must decide if we want to use these strategic energy projects to put Croatia in a proper place on the map of Europe.

Ruling Coalition Leaders Meet with Prime Minister

ZAGREB, March 6, 2018 - Representatives of the parties comprising the ruling majority said on Monday, after their regular meeting with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, which lasted more than four hours, that they discussed current issues and that new Agrokor emergency administrator Fabris Peruško briefed them about the situation at the heavily-indebted food conglomerate, stressing that there was no mention of the opposition’s initiative for a non-confidence vote in Economy Minister Martina Dalić.
