World Class: New Dubrovnik Sports Hall For 2025 World Handball Comp

February 4, 2020 – The new Dubrovnik Sports Hall will have world-class facilities and be multifunctional, capable of holding cultural events as well as sports. It will be completed in time for the city joint hosting the 2025 World Handball Championship

The City of Dubrovnik has revealed plans for a new world-class Dubrovnik sports hall. The venue will have ultra-modern facilities and will be a multifunctional space, allowing it to be also used for cultural events such as music concerts. The city will apply for European funds to help pay for the new Dubrovnik sports hall.

In February 2020 it was announced that Dubrovnik would be one of the hosts of the World Handball Championship in 2025. The announcement and impending visit of the competition is the impetus for launching the project of the new Dubrovnik sports hall. Croatia is one of three countries - alongside Denmark and Norway - that will jointly host the World Handball Championships in 2025.

The new Dubrovnik sports hall is planned as a multifunctional sports and congress hall and cultural centre, which will sit next to the existing sports hall in Gospino polje. The old hall and the new Dubrovnik sports hall will be connected, creating a venue capable of holding some 4200 spectators. It will be a complex containing three handball courts for competition or recreation, alternatively to be used as a congress hall or for music concerts, at which the capacity would be 4000 guests.

Plans for the new Dubrovnik sports hall were presented jointly by Mayor Mato Franković, Head of the Administrative Department for European Funds, Regional and International Cooperation Zrinka Raguž and Director of the Sports Facilities Dubrovnik Lukša Klaić. The city aims to obtain building permits by the end of 2021 and complete construction by the end of 2024.

Flights to Croatia: Luxair Returns to Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar this Summer

January 30, 2021 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Luxair returns to Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar this summer.

Croatian Aviation reports that Luxair has announced the return to three Croatian airports in the 2021 summer flight schedule.

Luxembourg Airlines, also known as Luxair, plans to operate three international routes to Croatia from Luxembourg this summer.

The airline plans to resume international traffic to Croatia at the beginning of the 2021 summer flight schedule, but the number of weekly operations remains minimal at all Croatian airports.

Lines to Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar
In the summer of 2021, Luxair will connect Luxembourg with Dubrovnik, Split, and Zadar, and all lines will operate only once a week.

The Luxembourg - Dubrovnik - Luxembourg line will be in operation from April 28 to October 2, once a week, on Saturdays. Between these two cities in the summer of 2021, Luxair will operate 24 return flights and offer a total of almost 3,650 seats.

The Luxembourg - Split - Luxembourg line will also operate once a week, on Sundays, from May 2 to October 10. Luxair will offer the same number of seats on the line to Split as to Dubrovnik.

The Luxembourg - Zadar - Luxembourg line will operate on Saturdays, from May 8 to October 2. Twenty-two return flights have been announced, with Luxair offering just over 3,300 seats between the two cities.

Luxair announced a few days ago that it is introducing the Luxembourg-Belgrade line. When asked about the possibility of introducing a line to Zagreb, the airline said that it actively monitors the market in Croatia and does not rule out the possibility of introducing a direct line to the Croatian capital in the near future.

On all routes to Croatia, Luxair will use DashQ400 aircraft with a capacity of 76 seats.

Flights to Croatia: Windrose Operates to Four Croatian Destinations this Summer

January 28, 2021 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Windrose operates to four Croatian destinations this summer.

Croatian Aviation reports that Windrose Airlines, a Ukrainian airline that has made a major expansion in the region in the past few months, has announced a summer flight schedule for Croatia.

Windrose will operate at four Croatian airports this summer, connecting Kyiv directly with Pula, Split, Dubrovnik, and Zagreb.

Kyiv to Pula
The Kyiv - Pula - Kyiv line will operate from June 5 to September 25 this year. Three flights a week will be available on this route every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from mid-June. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, A321 aircraft will operate between Kyiv and Pula, while on Thursdays, the two mentioned cities will be connected by smaller capacity aircraft - E145.

Kyiv - Split
On the same date, the line to Split will start operating, and as the line to Pula, it will operate three times a week, on the same days (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays). A321 aircraft have been announced on Thursdays and Saturdays, while E145s will operate on Mondays.

Dubrovnik only once a week
In the summer of 2020, Windrose launched the Kyiv-Dubrovnik line, which will continue to operate this summer. The first flight is announced on June 18, once a week, every Friday. E145 aircraft will operate on the route.

There is no increase in Zagreb
The Kyiv - Zagreb line was introduced in the winter flight schedule 2020/2021. The company currently operates on this route twice a week, and although it had announced an increase in the number of weekly flights, it never came to fruition. The company has temporarily given up on that plan and will continue to operate between Zagreb and Kyiv twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays, this summer as well. On the route to Zagreb, Windrose will use E145 and ATR75 aircraft.

Meet Mrs Croatia World 2021, Shawna Bošković

January 27, 2021 - TCN meets Shawna Bošković, a San Francisco native who became Mrs Croatia World 2021 and now calls Dubrovnik home.

It's not every day that TCN gets to meet the stars of the beauty pageant world, like Mrs Shawna Bošković, representing Croatia at Mrs World 2021.

With no Croatian heritage of her own but a Croatian husband in tow, Shawna leaped for love, saying goodbye to the Victorian homes of San Francisco and hello to the red rooftops of Dubrovnik to pursue a new life in the Adriatic Pearl.

"I moved here in February of 2020, relocating from San Francisco, California to Dubrovnik. A decision I had made with my husband. My husband is born and raised in Croatia. We met through friends and fell in love under the Croatian sunsets, and the rest is history! He has worked hard to become an architect, and he loves where he works in Dubrovnik. With my background in hospitality management, I can pretty much work anywhere, so we decided we would live in Dubrovnik," Shawna explained of her decision to move abroad, which happened just before the COVID-19 pandemic devastated the world.

"I was so excited to make a move but also scared as Croatia and the United States have a lot of cultural differences. Not long after I got here, the coronavirus pandemic hit the world, and we went into lockdown. Although this was crazy, unexpected, and hard, I was able to really spend time in a more empty Dubrovnik, learning all about my new home. I was also given a new job teaching English to children at the Dubrovnik School of Language. During this time, I found the Croatian people to be some of the most amazing people I had ever met. Willing to always help, non-judgmental, and very relaxed and carefree. I like to say the people here really enjoy life. They don’t LIVE to work. They work to live a full life. And that’s what Croatia is, full of life. I found my forever home here, and I can’t wait to start a family and raise my children in such an amazing wholesome place."

Shawna's love for Croatia thus sparked her interest in the Mrs World pageant.
"The pageant is the largest globally (as a MRS pageant), including Mrs America. It showcases married women and women with families. I love this because it shows you are not defined by a single or married status, and a woman can be so much when she is also a wife. I was also somewhat trying to find where I fit into Croatia and when the Mrs world pageant presented itself, I thought it would be an amazing opportunity for me to get involved in my community and showcase the wonderful place and people of Croatia."

Shawna's experience in the Mrs World pageant was a bit different this year, given the effect of COVID-19, but that didn't deter her from showcasing her new home.

"Because of the pandemic, the competition was held online. I was interviewed and asked, of course, why me? Why would I want to represent Croatia? Why do I think I’m the best to do this? I think I had an advantage seeing Croatia from an outsider's viewpoint than someone fully immersed in the culture. I am so eager to show the world my Croatia and the talents of its people. The judges saw this too, and I was crowned Mrs Croatia World!"

EBD9DBAE-C114-4AD9-B0C4-11CB764F57DF.jpeg

Given her new Mrs Croatia title, Shawna has been active in Dubrovnik, offering her hand to local companies, fashion designers, and animal shelters!

"I am currently working with the lovely people of the Zarkovica Dog Shelter in Dubrovnik. They work very hard to house animals and find them forever homes. It has been a tough year for them without a tourist season, people to walk the animals, and low funds. I am trying to bring awareness to their wonderful work!
With the earthquakes as well, I am doing anything I can to help the people affected. Our wonderful communities here are getting many resources to them, and I’m happy to help and donate! I like to say it might be early for "spring cleaning,” but it’s the perfect time to go through your things, and anything unwanted or not often used would be of great help to all of those people affected! As a native Californian, seeing the earthquake's devastation hits close to home. I would love to assist them in getting whatever they need.

I am also working with Croatian companies and designers only to showcase the talents and beauty of Croatia. I am working with an amazing young designer named Tena Filicic. She is doing all my work for the upcoming pageant to represent Croatia. I look forward to showcasing her Croatian designs on a World platform."

In Croatia for almost a year now, what else in the country has stolen Shawna's heart?

"Dubrovnik holds a special place in my heart, and it always will. It’s where I first felt at home in Croatia. I will never be able to thank all the people I have met for the kindness they have shown me in an otherwise challenging year.

7B21C7F6-B0C4-41AF-AB01-B8232E928088.jpeg

I honestly love all of Croatia, from the markets of Zagreb to the majestic Plitvice lakes. From the top to the bottom of Croatia, there is wonder and magic in every small town. I am honored to represent our wonderful country!"

So, what's next for Shawna?

"As Mrs Croatia is a platform for engaging in the community, I would like to continue working with local charities and businesses and start a family here soon. Also, the winner of Mrs World hosts the next pageant in their country, which I think is amazing, and I would love to bring a world showcase to Croatia!"

Dubrovnik Anticipates 354 Cruisers with Over 600,000 Passengers this Year

January 27, 2021 - Dubrovnik anticipates 354 cruisers this year, which should carry over 600,000 passengers, according to the Dubrovnik Port Authority director.

Tportal.hr reports that the Dubrovnik Port Authority director, Blaz Pezo, said on Tuesday that in 2021, 354 cruise ships with over 600 thousand passengers had announced their arrival in Dubrovnik.

As an HDZ city councilor, Pezo participated in the Dubrovnik City Council's discussion on Tuesday on the amount of tourist tax for cruise ships in international maritime traffic when the ship is moored at the port or anchored in the City of Dubrovnik area in 2022, which we reported on yesterday

"The cruiser market could recover from June 1. The announcements are excellent, and whether it will happen depends on the epidemiological situation," Pezo pointed out.

City councilors Maro Kristić (Most) and Rikard Rossetti (DUSTRA) pointed out that the decision on the amount of the tourist tax should be postponed. Still, Pezo replied that the shipowners were aware of the decision and that the fees had already been included in their arrangements so that no one would be burdened.

The Dubrovnik City Council confirmed, among other things, that work on a critical infrastructure project in Dubrovnik, the development of the Lapad coast, should begin in mid-February. The mayor of Dubrovnik, Mato Franković, pointed out that an artificial problem is being created that does not exist.

"We have all the valid permits and consents of all competent ministries. The expropriation procedure has started and been completed, a tender has been announced, and it will be completed in a few days. If there are no complaints, the works will start in mid-February," said Franković, adding that the concessionaire of the port area Marina Frapa should solve the problem of overlapping the concession property with the Republic of Croatia concessionaire.

At the Dubrovnik City Council, it was decided that the City of Dubrovnik representatives in the Governing Board of the "Good Deeds" Foundation will be Terezina Orlić, Nada Medović, and Suzana Kosović.

The councilors also decided on the awards of the City of Dubrovnik for 2020. The winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award is former Dubrovnik Mayor Nikola Obuljen. Furthermore, the winners of the annual awards are Maja Nodari, Fr. Pijo Pejić, and the Society of Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. The awards will be presented to the winners at a solemn session of the City Council during Dubrovnik City Day and the St. Blaise celebration.

Dubrovnik Expects HRK 14 Million in Tourist Tax from Cruisers this Year

January 25, 2021 - Dubrovnik expects HRK 14 million in tourist tax from cruisers this year, which will be used exclusively to improve the road infrastructure in the Dubrovnik area.

Slobodna Dalmacija reports that at the Dubrovnik City Council session scheduled for Tuesday, the amount of tourist tax for cruise ships in international maritime traffic in 2022 will be discussed.

Recall, Article 11 of the Tourist Tax Act stipulates that a ship on a cruise in international maritime traffic and international traffic on inland waters, when it is at berth in the port or anchored at the port, may pay the tourist tax, provided that the municipal or city council decides whether or not to charge and in what amount.

The proposal to the City Council from the City Administrative Department for Tourism, Economy and the Sea is that from January 1, 2022, ships with a capacity of 50 to 200 passengers will be charged a tourist tax of 2,000 kuna, those with a capacity of 201 to 500 passengers will pay 5,000 kuna, while 10,000 kuna will be charged per ship with a capacity of 501 to 1000 passengers.

For ships with a capacity of 1001 to 2000 passengers, 20,000 kuna will be charged, from 2001 to 3,000 passengers - 30,000 kuna, and for ships with a passenger capacity of more than 3001 - 40,000 kuna.

These amounts are no different from those approved by the City Council at its session on September 23, 2019, when the decision was made to collect this tax in the same amounts for 2021.

Billing began on January 1, and the city of Dubrovnik expects 14 million kuna in tourist tax from cruisers this year, which will be used exclusively to improve the road infrastructure in the area of the city of Dubrovnik, said Mato Franković.

The collection of this tax was made possible by the Ministry of Tourism by amending the Law on Tourist Tax, leaving its collection to local self-government units.

In January last year, the City of Split also decided on tourist tax for cruisers. In the season, cruisers will be charged the maximum amount, with the same schedule as Dubrovnik, while out of season, from November 1 to April 30, the fee will be 50 percent lower.

Approximately twice as many cruisers sail to Dubrovnik annually than to Split, which accepts twice as many cruisers as Zadar. The City of Zadar also charges the maximum tourist tax to cruise ships, except in the port of Gaženica, a large infrastructure project made with state money, where this tax is not charged to increase competitiveness.

The good news is that MSC Cruises announced on Monday that boarding MSC Grandios and MSC Magnifico in the winter season 2020/2021 will be possible for three additional countries: Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania. Once they initially resumed navigation, boarding was only possible for passengers from 26 Schengen countries.

Following a temporary suspension due to restrictive traffic within Italy during the MSC Grandios holiday season, MSC Cruises' flagship fleet resumed its 7-night cruises on January 24, departing from Genoa every Sunday and visiting the Italian ports of Civitavecchia, Naples, Palermo, and Valletta in Malta. Boarding is possible in each of these Italian ports. MSC Grandios will sail with the said itinerary until March 21, after which it will stay in the western Mediterranean with a new itinerary as part of its summer program.

MSC Magnifica will continue sailing on February 14, departing from Genoa on 11-night cruises designed to give guests a chance to discover the attractions of the eastern and western Mediterranean, with a tour of Italy, Greece, and Malta.

As the Dubrovnik Port Authority director, Blaz Pezo, said, it has been possible to board and disembark some guests or crew members on MSC ships before.

"So far, they have not embarked or departed from our ports en masse," said Pezo.

"In exceptional situations, guests were able to board half of the cruise. The port of embarkation is Venice for them. They may no longer have as much demand, so they consider making it easier for people to board in Split or Zadar to reduce the costs for someone traveling from Bosnia or southern Croatia to Venice. Everything has changed now," said the Port Authority director, who is already rooting for Dubrovnik to become a homeport destination.

Firefighter Whose Petrinja Rescue Dog Was Poisoned Given New Puppy

January 26, 2021 – Firefighter Srđan Botica from Slano near Dubrovnik was inconsolable after his hero Petrinja rescue dog Alice was poisoned a few days ago. Although irreplaceable, Srđan's friends could no longer stand by and watch him grieve undeservedly, so they bought a brand new Belgian Shepherd puppy to cheer him up

Srđan Botica was inconsolable after the death of his dog, Alice. Although she was still quite young, Alice and Srđan had built a strong bond between them. The training required for a dog like Alice to become a specialist search and rescue dog will have that kind of effect. The relationship Srđan established with Alice was strengthened both in his workplace, where Srđan is a firefighter and at home, which is where Srđan brought Alice each evening.

The final test of the pair's attachment was to be the rubble left in the aftermath of the Sisak Moslavina earthquake. Srđan volunteered to travel from Dubrovnik to help in the response. Alice became a Petrinja rescue dog, scouring the damaged and fallen buildings for survivors. The inseparable pair stayed for six days undertaking their work.

ScreenshotaliceandSrdan.pngSrdan and Alice at work after the earthquake

As TCN was saddened to report over recent days, the partnership of Srđan Botic and his Petrinja rescue dog Alice was tragically cut short within weeks of their return. Alice was poisoned on the streets of her home in Slano, near Dubrovnik.

Though Petrinja rescue dog Alice was one of a kind and can never be replaced, the friends of firefighter Srđan Botica could no longer sit by and watch his undeserved grief. Over the last couple of days they clubbed together and bought Srđan a new dog. Srđan's new housemate goes by the name of Amy and she's still just a puppy. Amy is a Belgian Shepherd, the exact same breed as Petrinja rescue dog Alice.

It is probably still too early to say whether Amy will follow in Alice's pawsteps to become a search and rescue dog. But, Belgian Shepherds are one of the best-known breeds for this kind of work. They are used as search and rescue dogs by firefighters and mountain rescue in many countries, and as police and military dogs. They have a good reputation as sniffer dogs, particularly in the field of finding illegal drugs. Several Belgian Shepherds have been decorated for bravery and they are very protective of their owners and handlers.

The US Secret Service, Israel Defence Forces, Indian NSG commando unit and Royal Australian Air Force use Belgian Shepherds in their work. The breed is second in number only to the German Shepherd for use across the whole of the US Armed Forces.

Mladost Tops Jug to Defend Croatian Cup Title

January 25, 2021 - Mladost tops Jug to defend the Croatian Cup title (15:13).

Mladost defended the Croatian Cup on Sunday, lifting the trophy for the tenth time. Their opponent, Jug, remained with 14 titles and failed to reach their 66th trophy in history.

Mladost opened the match well, especially with an extra man (which was a great bonus for them throughout the match), and led 4:2 at the end of the first quarter. Mladost was up by two goals in the middle of the second quarter (7:5). Jug fought back with four consecutive goals (Fatović penalty, Papanastasiou, Fatović, and Kržić) for a complete turnaround - 9:7 for Jug!

At half time, the Mladost coach replaced goalkeeper Ivan Marcelić with Jerko Jurlina, which proved to be one of the key decisions of the Mladost bench. However, at the beginning of the third quarter, Merkulov scored from a distance for 10:7, which, combined with Popadić defending a penalty, opened the door for Jug.

Mladost did not give up, and with a great defense and goals by Kharkov and Visković, they were just one goal behind before the last quarter (11:10 for Jug AO). At the beginning of the last quarter, Miloš equalized at 11:11. The last time Jug lead was thanks to Garcia (12:11 - six minutes before the end).

Kharkov attacked with three more goals, and four and a half minutes before the final buzzer, Mladost took the lead at 14:12 and managed to keep that advantage until the end.

The left-handed youngster, Russia national team player Konstantin Kharkov, was chosen as the best player of the final tournament. In addition to 3 goals in the semifinals against Primorje EB, he puzzled the mighty Jug defense, scoring 7 goals in the final.

Zoran Bajić, Mladost coach, said after the match:

"To my boys, well done, they were fantastic. We were like a cat with 9 lives. We were behind and played great against Jug, a huge, fantastic team, but this is not the first time we have shown character. I have said many times that these are my warriors. Beating Jug in the last two and a half years in four finals is no small thing."

Vjekoslav Kobešćak, coach of Jug AO, added:

"Congratulations to Mladost on the victory. They were a better team today, calmer, and they deserved the victory. We only played one quarter properly, that was the second. The rest wasn't us. This is the second game in a row in which we received 15 goals from Mladost, and with so many goals conceded, serious water polo cannot be played, nor can we win a trophy."

Flights to Croatia: Eurowings Connects Four Croatian Cities with Berlin Brandenburg in Summer

January 23, 2021 - The latest news for flights to Croatia Eurowings connects four Croatian cities with Berlin Brandenburg in summer.

Croatian Aviation reports that Rijeka, Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik will have a direct line to Berlin's new airport this summer!

In its timetable for the upcoming summer season, Eurowings has announced these four routes as new. However, almost all of the above-mentioned Croatian airports previously had a connection to Berlin Tegel Airport. Since the airport is closed, traffic to Croatia will be transferred to the new airport, and for the first time, four Croatian cities will be directly connected to the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

The first line will be the Berlin - Split - Berlin line, before the Easter holiday. The flight will mark the start of the season on Saturday, April 3. The airline plans to operate on this route until October 30, every Saturday, and from June 1, the number of weekly flights will increase to two. Namely, an additional flight is introduced on Tuesdays. In this period, Eurowings will operate over 50 return flights between Split and Berlin and offer more than 17,500 seats in both directions. A319 and A320 aircraft have been announced on the route and all other routes to Croatia.

The Berlin - Dubrovnik - Berlin line will start operating on May 9 and run until the end of the summer flight schedule, October 24. One flight per week is available every Sunday, so Eurowings will offer around 8,200 seats on this line during the season.

The Berlin - Rijeka - Berlin line will be in operation from May 15 to October 30, also once a week, on Saturdays. Twenty-six return flights are planned, with Eurowings currently offering more than 8,500 seats between Berlin and Kvarner.

The Berlin - Zadar - Berlin line has been announced from May 22 to October 30 and will also operate on Saturdays once a week. The 25 announced return flights guarantee over 8,200 seats in both directions.

Eurowings will offer over 43,000 seats between Croatian airports and Berlin in the 2021 summer flight schedule.

Recall that in the summer of 2019, Eurowings operated from Berlin (ZL Tegel) to almost all airports in Croatia. In the summer season of 2020, only the Berlin-Split-Berlin route operated briefly. According to current announcements, Croatian airports will again be directly connected to the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

The airline currently offers cheap tickets on routes from Croatia to Berlin, starting from 50 euros, with all prices on the official Eurowings website.

Flights to Croatia: Iberia Plans Dubrovnik and Zagreb Services in March

January 22, 2021 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Iberia plans Dubrovnik and Zagreb services in March.

Croatian Aviation reports that Spanish national airline Iberia has confirmed that it plans to return to Dubrovnik and Zagreb in March this year.

In the 2020 summer season, Iberia operated on only one line to Croatia, connecting Madrid with Dubrovnik. All other routes to Croatian airports did not operate last summer due to low demand.

As confirmed to Croatian Aviation, Iberia plans to return to Zagreb and Dubrovnik at the end of March, and flights will operate depending on restrictive measures and the epidemiological situation.

The Madrid - Zagreb - Madrid line will operate its first flight this year on March 27. The airline plans to operate on this line 3 times a week until the end of April, mostly on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. A320 and A321 aircraft have been announced on the route. From the end of March to the beginning of May, the airline plans to offer over 5,700 seats between Zagreb and Madrid. An increase in the number of weekly flights is expected from mid-May, while in the peak of the summer season, Iberia should operate on this route at least once a day.

The Madrid - Dubrovnik - Madrid line should launch a little earlier, on March 25. The company initially plans three flights a week on this route, but there are already certain dates with ad-hoc flights on other days of the week. From the end of March to the beginning of May, the airline plans almost 20 return flights on this line, and slightly more seats are available for sale compared to the Zagreb line, over 6,500!

We remind you that Iberia did not operate to Zagreb, Split, and Zadar in the summer flight schedule last year, and judging by the current schedule, it will operate to Dubrovnik and Zagreb this year. Of course, changes are still possible. The airline has confirmed that it plans to operate on routes to Croatia according to the specified flight schedule, but this will, once again, depend on restrictive measures and the epidemiological situation that directly affects demand on flights. Routes to and from Madrid in that sense are no exception.

Iberia, Líneas Aéreas de España, S.A., the operator, Sociedad Unipersonal, is the largest Spanish airline. The company was founded in 1927 and is headquartered in Madrid. With its fleet of over 70 aircraft, it flies to more than 70 domestic and international destinations. Their central airport is Barajas in Madrid, and as a second base, they use El Prat Airport in Barcelona.

Iberia has a developed network of destinations. With one transfer, it is possible to travel from and to Boston, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Chicago, New York, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Lima, and many other destinations in North and South America.
