April 25, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as SAS Split flights officially launched over the weekend, with their return to Dubrovnik and Pula scheduled from June. 

On Saturday, SAS Scandinavian Airlines started regular seasonal operations between Split and Copenhagen, and at the beginning of May, it will resume traffic on the routes from Stockholm and Gothenburg to Split. Lines to Dubrovnik and Pula have been announced from June, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Namely, the well-known Scandinavian airline began regular operations between Copenhagen and Split on Saturday, which currently runs once a week. However, the number of rotations will increase to two in early May.

From May 7, there will be regular lines from Stockholm and Gothenburg, and from May 21 from Oslo to Split. The number of rotations will increase significantly in June and July, i.e., during the peak summer season.

SAS will operate to Dubrovnik on three lines - from Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm. However, the start of traffic on these lines is expected from the end of June.

The same is true for Pula Airport, according to which four lines have been announced. In addition to the mentioned lines to Dubrovnik, Pula should be connected with Gothenburg, also from the end of June this year.

SAS will use different types of aircraft on the 11 mentioned routes to three Croatian airports, from the smallest, CRJ900, to aircraft type A321, with a capacity of up to 200 seats.

Recall, TUI recently announced it is planning 15 international seasonal routes to these three Croatian airports, too.

April 23, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as 15 TUI Croatia summer flights will run this year to Dubrovnik, Split, and Pula. 

Well-known British tour operator TUI has announced 15 regular flights to three Croatian airports - Dubrovnik, Split, and Pula. All traffic lines, according to currently available data, should start in May, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Namely, TUI is planning 15 international seasonal routes to the three mentioned Croatian airports, with the largest number of operations announced to Dubrovnik Airport, which is not surprising considering that Dubrovnik will be the hub of this tour operator's cruiser this summer season.

Press Release on April 21, 2022 - A presentation of the conceptual design of the future hotel Valkane was held in the Pula Cinestar in the Max City center.

The conceptual solution was made by the renowned architectural studio 3LHD, which in its portfolio, among numerous projects such as the Infobip Campus in Zagreb and the Rimac Campus in Sveta Nedelja, which is under construction last week, has a number of hotels of the highest category. like the Grand Park Hotel in Rovinj, successfully realized in Istria. The project of the Valkane Hotel was presented by 3LHD's author team, in the presence of investor representatives, to the media and tourism, public, economic and other stakeholders for whom this investment is of interest and importance.

Hotel Valkane will be the first high-class hotel in the wider Pula area. It will be located inside the former quarry, and its construction will rehabilitate an area that has been neglected since 1965. In the conceptual design, a maximum of two underground and a maximum of seven above-ground floors with a total of 180 rooms are planned. It also includes 183 underground parking spaces that will fully meet the needs of the hotel, and no new parking spaces will be built on the surface of the plot. Access to the hotel will be exclusively on the existing road from the east, or rear, and will not affect the Lungo mare belt. The planned value of the project is over 500 million kuna + VAT, and the city will collect a utility contribution of approximately 10 million kuna, a water contribution of 2 million kuna and 1.2 million kuna in utility fees per year.

"In creating this conceptual solution, we were guided by the historical context of the location, as well as its natural environment, forest, coast and stone. The requirement of modern architecture is to be maximally connected and integrated with the natural landscape and to respect the environment, and this was our modus operandi on this as well as on other projects. From something that was a huge hole and a completely inaccessible space created by stone exploitation, in such a beautiful and emotionally valuable location for the people of Pula, we tried to create a project that is merged with the context and volume, values ​​the environment and leaves the park forest accessible to the public. and so far. I’m thanking the clients for their trust and for showing an extremely high level of understanding and acceptance of our architectural expression ", said Silvije Novak from 3LHD.

The total area of ​​the plot on which the hotel and hotel facilities will be located is 27,329 m2, while the area of ​​the plot for the construction of the hotel is half of the total area, ie 13,189 m2, and the construction area itself is 6964 m2. Hotel Valkane will occupy only 2.38% of the total coverage of the UPU Lungo mare, and for comparison, it will be three times less than the amount of material exploited from the old quarry (270,000 m3). It is important to mention that the outer edge of the hotel is 160 meters from the sea and that the project does not provide for any intervention in the coastal zone.

"We believe that after this presentation it is clear that the investor does not intend to build an isolated resort, concrete the coast, touch the promenade that is maritime and managed by the city or build elevators to the beach as previously heard in public space. None of these claims are true. The goal is to combine private investment with the improvement of public space as much as possible, and accordingly, a four-meter-high fence will be removed from private tennis courts and a park accessible to citizens will be opened within the hotel. What we also want to mention is that the realization of the project requires the planting of 150-200 new trees, which will further enrich the entire space. We are very pleased with the conceptual solution because we believe that it respects the environment, and combines the requirements of this beautiful area and hotel and we are proud to continue with new large investments in Pula, after the Max City center which was successfully completed on time. April 15, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as the Transavia Rotterdam-Pula line will begin operating on April 21! 

Good news from Croatian Aviation this morning - Pula Airport will soon be connected again by a regular Transavia route with Rotterdam!

Pula Airport is preparing for a summer season in which a significant recovery in passenger traffic is expected compared to 2020 and 2021. Certain routes are already in operation, like the earlier announced Lufthansa, Croatia Airlines, Trade Air, and Ryanair, and now Transavia will soon return to Pula, too.

This well-known low-cost airline is planning the first flight of this summer season between Rotterdam and Pula on Thursday, April 21. Flights have been announced three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday with B737-700 and B737-800 aircraft. In the peak of the summer season, 5 weekly flights are planned on this route, every day except Wednesdays and Fridays.

The number of operations in September and October will be gradually reduced, and at the end of the summer flight schedule (the very end of October), the line will stop operating. 

This is the only line by this airline to Pula Airport, which this year will have to compensate a significant number of passengers due to a lack of Russian and Ukrainian guests who in previous years came to Istria and Croatia in large numbers via this airport.

Recall, easyJet announced earlier this week that there would be changes on several of its routes to Croatian coastal airports, Pula included.

April 12, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as the easyJet Croatia summer flight schedule reveals changes to the Croatian coast. 

British low-cost airline easyJet has made several operational changes in its summer flight schedule this year in the last few days, including many changes on routes to Croatia, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Namely, easyJet changes the capacity and the weekly number of flights on many routes, including those to Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik, i.e., all Croatian airports to which this well-known airline operates exclusively in the summer flight schedule.

Changes to Split
The line between Bristol and Split, previously announced 5 times a week in the summer flight schedule, will operate daily from the end of June,

The line between London (Gatwick) and Split in the peak summer season was to operate 18 times a week, and the number of rotations has increased to 22 flights a week. There has also been an additional capacity increase. Some flights will fly the larger A321 aircraft instead of A320.

The line between London (Luton) and Split increases from 9 to 11 weekly flights,

April 2, 2022 - Aquarium Pula, the largest aquarium in Croatia, has just received the Friend of the Sea Sustainability Certificate for its outstanding efforts to preserve the sea.

To be a certified Friend of the Sea, aquariums must not only meet strict sustainable policies, waste management, and social responsibility but also commit to displaying comprehensive scientific information related to each species housed, offering annual educational courses for their visitors. The certificate also ensures that aquariums meet the highest animal welfare standards and prevent mammals from being trapped unless notable exceptions are made.

Aquarium Pula is located in a 130-year-old Austro-Hungarian building with a beautiful view of the historic port of Pula, conveniently set to experience the beauty of the sea fully. Today, the former fortress abounds in the marine world, which is mainly found in the Adriatic Sea, Croatian lakes and rivers, but also in seas around the world.

Aquarium Pula started as a private family venture by biologist Dr. Milena Mičić in 2000 and has grown into the largest aquarium in Croatia.

"The aquarium boasts one of the most diverse displays of Mediterranean life in Europe and numerous tropical exhibits displayed on an area of ​​more than 3,000 m2," said Dr. Milena Mičić, director of Aquarium Pula.

Dr. Milena Mičić started the aquarium with marine conservation based on basic activities, which today is widely known for its high-quality water experience, but also intensive research and environmental education. Aquarium Pula places a strong emphasis on educational tourism by organizing a series of activities and workshops to raise awareness of the many threats facing the ocean and the preservation of biology.

Aquarium Pula has received a lot of positive media attention due to its involvement in numerous ongoing conservation programs. The most important are: the Sea Turtle Rescue Center and the Noble Armor Sanctuary, both recognized by the Croatian Government.

Since 2001, Aquarium Pula has saved, rehabilitated, and returned more than 180 sea turtles. April the 2nd, 2022 - The neglected swampy Pula Pragrande area which is right in the very heart of this popular Istrian city will be left abandoned no more. The Pula Pragrande area is set to be transformed into a brand new city park.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the fairly heavily neglected swamp-like area of ​​Pragrande, located near Pula's city centre, now has the opportunity to remain the green heart of Pula, but in a far more useful and sightly way.

With the aim of popularising this green oasis, which many Pula residents have actually never set foot in, Pula high school students who are also members of the Eco-school, as part of a project called ''Knowledge for Sustainable Action'', which was led by Green Istria, began taking environmental action. With the support of their professors and project partners - which includes the City of Pula, they designed and jointly arranged a 2.2-kilometre-long promenade called the Apple Trail, as reported by local portal Glas Istre/The Voice of Istria.

Their wish, they claim, is that the trail be regularly maintained, but also that the whole area remains a wild zone for the recreation and socialising of Pula locals and tourists, while preserving and protecting biodiversity.

The Mayor of Pula, Filip Zoricic, promised the students involved that this area will remain a green zone during their last visit to the Communal Palace back in December, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the international status of the Eco-school. He said at the time that the documentation for the Pula Pragrande transformation project was being resolved, and that the realisation of the creation of a brand new city park at that location would be preceded by the solving of the sewerage problem, as part of a wider EU project.

It's worth reminding ourselves of the fact that the City of Pula recently applied for a total of ten projects in a call/invitation for grants in the field of digital transformation and green transition, within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan 2021-2026, and the most important and largest of them is the preparation of project documentation precisely for the arrangement of Pragrande, an unarranged urban space in the immediate vicinity of the strict city centre.

This currently regards the necessary documentation for the ''re-vamping'' of the aforementioned green zone, which covers an area of ​​more than 20 hectares in total, and the intention, according to the City of Pula, is to arrange a large central city park with accompanying sport and recreational facilities.

Dubrovnik has the largest number of lines announced for the first week of the summer flight schedule (36), followed by Split with 31 lines, Zadar with 21, Pula with 5, and Rijeka and Osijek with 4 regular lines each.

Almost all lines to Zadar Airport from next week are on Ryanair, which also applies to Rijeka Airport.

On the other hand, Osijek remains on Trade Air domestic lines, which have been in traffic all winter. The start of international traffic is expected in May. At the beginning of the summer flight schedule, the novelty is the Croatia Airlines route to Split, which will start operating on April 1.

March 13, 2022 - Legendary former Croatia water polo player Damir Burić played an official game for Pula's KK Stoja against Rijeka's Kvarner Junior in the 16th round of the Second League - West on Saturday night.  The 41-year-old talks about why he swapped the pool for the court. 

It was a historic Saturday for Pula sports and Stoja basketball, as the famous Pula water polo player Damir Burić joined them on the Stoja primary school court.

Burić was a significant part of Pula water polo history back when the city was without a pool. He won everything possible with the Croatia national team - Olympic, world, and European gold, while the same goes for the club level, as there is no trophy he did not win, reports Jutarnji List.

Can he dunk?

"I could, but now I'm not even trying, haha. I'm taking care of my spine. I train with young guys, 16-18 years old, a few 25-26 year olds, one is 33, and I am 41. So be careful. I run, I wear out, but I still avoid some things. I mean, I can dunk it in, it's not a big success, but I save myself."

How does he shoot?

"Haha, I have to admit that when I was younger, I shot better. However, it’s good and getting better."

He plays on the wing.

"Wing, center, sort of. I mean, it's the Second League. After all, we don't have a lot of tall players. Thank God it's like that because I wouldn't even bother if it was different."

How did he decide to join his hometown club, Pula's Stoja?

"In principle, I played all last summer, but not seriously training. The club president, Šime Vidulin, is a good friend of mine from school days, and he persuaded me to come to training. So I trained a little for myself because swimming and gym get a little boring when you're always alone. And then I came about a month and a half ago. I have been with them constantly ever since."

Stoja Basketball Club has certainly never had a more celebrated member!

March 10th, 2022 - The trend originating from Sweden has been taking root in Istria over the last few years

An interesting event combining fitness and ecology will take place in Pula this weekend, on Sunday the 13th of March. A so-called plogging race was announced earlier today in the Šijana forest park, reports Glas Istre.

Plogging is a unique activity which originates from Sweden and involves picking up garbage while jogging outdoors - saving the planet, one run at a time. The trend gets its original name ‘plogga’ from a combination of two words, ‘jogga’ for jogging and ‘plockka up’ which translates to ‘picking up’ in Swedish. Apart from helping the environment, plogging is also believed to be very beneficial for physical health as it involves a lot of coordinated muscle activity.

A number of plogging races were held in southern Istria in 2019 and 2020, and the praiseworthy initiative now marches on with the upcoming Sunday race in Pula.

There’s no registration fee, and anyone interested can participate in one of two categories. The first is a competitive category for runners, and will have the racers jogging on the Orchid trail (Croatian: Orhideja), collecting waste within the marked area for 60 minutes.

The second is a family-friendly category, intended for everyone who wants to lend a helping hand and do some good while out on a nice walk in nature. Teams are required to have a minimum of two members and will have an hour to collect discarded waste on the Little Prince trail (Croatian: Mali princ), i.e. on the central plateau in Šijana.

All the participants will be provided with garbage bags and gloves, and they will also receive participation certificates. Those who collect the most discarded garbage during the race will also be presented with special prizes from the event’s sponsors.

The race was announced by Silvia Butiggnoni, the director of the Public Institution Natura Histrica, and Erik Lukšić of the ISTRun company.
