June the 7th, 2022 - Pula and Nextbike have teamed up to make cycling in the city centre more easy and readily available, both believing that cars have no place in the historic core. This Nextbike Pula move will greatly contribute to lowering our carbon footprint at the local level.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, a contract has been signed between Pula Mayor Filip Zoricic and the Croatian Nextbike director Ante Gustin for the management and maintenance of classic and electric bike stations in the system of the City of Pula, local portal Glas Istre reports.

"It's a project which deals with greater mobility, which, along with thirty bicycles and a hundred scooters, contributes to greater connectivity in Pula. The Nextbike company is a recognisable European brand that has been successfully implemented by cities such as Berlin and Munich, and with this Nextbike Pula collaboration, this city has been included on the European map of Nextbike cities. This is a contribution to our desire to have as few vehicles as possible in the city centre, and now, in addition to the use of public transport, alternatives are being offered through bike and scooter rental services,'' said the Mayor of Pula, Filip Zoricic.

“Cars don’t belong in the city centre,” added Nextbike CEO Leonhard von Harrach.

The Nextbike Pula contract covers the services of maintenance of the entire system and management, as well as services and activities in the operating system and maintenance of software applications for system management. As part of this project in the area of ​​the city of Pula, it will be possible to rent both classic bikes and electric ones at several locations, as well as electric scooters from this year on. Existing locations are being set up with new equipment, and new ones will be opened with the intention of making a better connection and making the system more efficient.

The annual subscription for public bicycles (electric and classic) is 200 kuna and allows unlimited use of bicycles for up to 30 minutes in a single ride throughout the year. The number of individual rides during one day isn't limited. For all other users, the price is 10 kuna for an electric and 5 kuna for a classic bike, for half an hour of use. The price for unlocking and using an electric scooter is a mere 7.50 kuna and is charged at 1.80 kuna per minute of use. It's also possible to get a subscription by which a user gets an unlimited number of 'unlocks' with a one-time payment of 40 kuna. The total value of this praiseworthy Nextbike Pula contract stands at 198 thousand kuna without VAT.

May 31, 2022 - After the citizens had the opportunity to get acquainted with the real intentions to build a hotel in the former quarry at Valkane, as well as its appearance, the results of a survey conducted by the market research and public opinion agency IPSOS showed that, after hearing all relevant information, the majority of Pula residents, 58.3% support the construction of hotels, while 34.4% are against, and 7.3% of citizens are without answers.

It is interesting to note that 56.6% of citizens believe that demanding a referendum on building a hotel Valkane is a political game and collecting political points, only 30.9% believe that it is a real concern for citizens, while 12.5% ​​do not know.

 - In order for democracy to function, it is necessary to inform the decision-maker and we really try to communicate our every step publicly. We believed that, after getting acquainted with the project, a larger number of citizens will have a positive opinion of the project, which has now proved to be true. Regardless of what we do exclusively according to laws and valid plans, we care that citizens understand all segments of the project. Unfortunately, we have become the subject of political battles in which we do not want to participate. Opponents of the hotel conducted the research before the project was presented to the public and during a negative campaign marked by untruths and intimidation of citizens, and this has nothing to do with democratic decision-making based on true information. Unfortunately, these days they continue with the same rhetoric and we will be forced to seek legal protection from such untruths, but we are glad that more and more citizens support a project that will never bring a beautiful hotel, landscaped forest park, and public park and 250 year-round jobs, Hotel Valkane company said.

The same survey showed that 11.7% of citizens have not heard of this project so far, and of those who have, 37.3% know a lot about it, 38.3% do not know enough, while 12.7% have heard of the project, but they know nothing about it.

When we talk about the current situation in the area of ​​the former quarry at Valkane, 19.9% ​​of citizens believe that the situation in that location is good and that nothing needs to change, while 47.9% of them disagree and think that the location is insecure and ugly and urgent remediation and conversion is needed. 24.1% of them do not know and have not been there for a long time, 3% of citizens do not know where it is, and 5.1% do not know.

Almost two thirds of respondents agree that Pula needs five-star hotels, such as those built in Rovinj, of which 30.9% think it is very important, and 30.4% think they need it, but not very important. 24.7% of them believe that such hotels in Pula should not be built, but they would not mind, while only 12% of citizens would mind building such content, and 2% of them are unanswered, the results of this study showed.

- We continue to inform citizens about all the details and activities and about each phase of the project in the coming months, from the preparatory works, permits and finally the construction and opening of the hotel, concluded the company Hotel Valkane.

The survey of citizens' attitudes for Hotel Valkane was conducted by the IPSOS agency from 23 to 27 May 2022, on a representative sample of 600 respondents over the age of 18 residing in the City of Pula.

May 31, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as 10 Transavia Croatia lines will operate next month!

Well-known low-cost airline Transavia is planning 10 international flights to five Croatian airports in France and the Netherlands in June, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Namely, the subsidiary of the Air France - KLM group will operate on 10 scheduled flights to 5 Croatian airports - Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik.

One line has been announced from Rotterdam to Pula Airport, which will be in traffic three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Transavia mainly uses 737-700 KLM aircraft on this line.

Transavia has reduced the number of flights offered to Rijeka Airport in June. On the regular line between Rijeka and Eindhoven in June, only one flight on Sundays is available for booking.

According to Zadar, Transavia has announced two lines, from Paris and Rotterdam. From Orly Airport, planes will fly to Zadar on Tuesdays and Saturdays, while flights from Rotterdam are announced on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Split Airport has announced three Transavia flights for June from Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Paris.

Transavia will operate between Rotterdam and Split 5 times a week in June (every day except Tuesdays and Fridays), between Amsterdam and Split 3 times a week (Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays), and between Paris and Split 4 times a week (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays). Transavia will offer almost 19 thousand seats in June to and from Split Airport. 

Dubrovnik Airport has a line from Paris 5 times a week, from Rotterdam 3 times a week, and from Nantes 2 times a week.

This airline will offer more than 45,000 seats on its B737-700 and B737-800 aircraft on 10 international routes to the mentioned airports. A total of up to 30 flights per week were announced in June, with the airline leaving the possibility of increasing the number of weekly operations in the second half of June, depending on the movement of bookings.

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has modified its flight schedule for June. Next month, the well-known airline will offer almost 80 scheduled flights to and from six Croatian airports, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Ryanair plans to operate 79 international routes to 6 Croatian airports in June to Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, and Zagreb, with based aircraft and crew in Zagreb and Zadar.

Zadar Airport is definitely the number one airport in Croatia for Ryanair. Aircraft will fly to more than 45 destinations and will offer over 160,000 seats in more than 450 rotations. Certain lines were already scheduled to be in operation, but the carrier postponed the start of operations on several lines for commercial reasons until the second half of June.

From Split to:
Dublin, four times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Dublin is the only Ryanair destination from Split. 17 rotations are planned for June, with Ryanair offering more than 6,000 seats.

May 25, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Air Serbia flights to Croatia have been significantly boosted from Belgrade this summer. 

Serbian national airline Air Serbia will launch two seasonal routes to Split and Dubrovnik by the end of May, and flights from Belgrade to Pula, Rijeka, and Zadar by mid-June, reports Croatian Aviation.

Namely, Air Serbia plans to operate to six Croatian airports this summer, with only the route to Zagreb being year-round.

Already this Thursday, May 26, two lines will start operating from Belgrade to Split and Dubrovnik. These are also the two most popular of Air Serbia lines to and from Croatia.

The line between Belgrade and Split will operate from May 26, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, and the number of weekly operations will gradually increase. Namely, first on June 6, an additional flight will be introduced on Mondays, and then on June 24 with a flight on Fridays, which will allow Air Serbia to operate between the two cities four times a week, using ATR72, A319, and A320 aircraft.

The line between Dubrovnik and Belgrade will start operating on the same day. Currently, two flights a week have been announced, also on Thursdays and Sundays, with an additional flight available on Mondays from June 13. ATR72 and A319 aircraft have also been announced on this route.

From mid-June, there will be lines from Belgrade to Pula, Rijeka, and Zadar, and everything will start around the same period. Namely, the line between Belgrade and Zadar will start with traffic from June 14 with two flights a week, a day later (June 15), the line between Belgrade and Rijeka will begin, and from June 16, flights between Belgrade and Pula will launch. 

All three mentioned lines have announced two flights a week in June with ATR72 aircraft. The line to Zadar will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays, to Rijeka on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and to Pula on Thursdays and Sundays.

The only year-round Air Serbia route between Belgrade and Zagreb will also have more flights in June than the current schedule. Namely, on Mondays and Fridays, the airline will offer two flights a day between the two cities, while one daily flight is available on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

In June, Air Serbia will operate on 6 mentioned routes to Croatia with a total of 20 weekly flights, which is a significant increase, especially compared to the same period last year and the year before. The number of flights will continue to grow in the peak summer season.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, on Wednesday, the first man of the Fight Nation Championship, Drazen Forgac, and Matej Filipcic, the director of marketing and martial arts promotion, visited Pula, local portal Glas Istre reports.

The kickstarter was a conversation with city's leading names in the company of Zelg Galesic, the coach of the Pula Trojan, and the reason was the desire of the organisers of martial arts events who are continuing to break all ratings records in the entire region, to hold something similar in the Pula Arena.

British low-cost carrier easyJet will operate to five Croatian airports this summer. While it has already announced several routes to Pula, the carrier will soon increase the number of operations and resume flights to Zadar Airport, reports Croatian Aviation.

This summer, easyJet will operate 5 international routes to Zadar Airport and 9 routes to Pula Airport. 

Namely, easyJet will operate on 9 international routes to Pula Airport this summer from:

Due to the smaller number of routes and weekly rotations, easyJet will offer almost 50,000 seats to and from Zadar Airport this summer, but passengers to and from Zadar are not a problem given that Ryanair has a large base at this airport. For the airport itself, it would certainly be better if the number of routes was diversified across multiple airlines.

In the peak summer season, easyJet will have several lines to Split and Dubrovnik, while only two lines have been announced to Rijeka.

May the 16th, 2022 - The announced construction of the five-star Hotel Valkane, with the investor being a Serbian media mogul, has caused quite the reaction among locals in Pula, with the local self-government unit there now torn between giving it the green light and saying a resounding no.

As Morski writes, the construction of a 5-star, 7-storey hotel on a popular promenade by the sea has raised a real storm in Pula and shaken up the city government. Does the city need another huge hotel or not, and is the lungomare (the city's promenade) really the right location for that? The reactions are as strong as they are mixed.

Hotel Valkane's investor, otherwise a Serbian billionaire and media mogul, wants to build the aforementioned hotel which would be worth half a billion kuna. The mayor has given the idea a thumbs up, but Pula locals are allegedly less than thrilled about the idea.

''We sincerely hope that Hotel Valkane will be completed within the next three to four years. There's no talk of deforestation, causing damage to the promenade or anything of high value. On the contrary, the ''hole'' that was once used should be returned to function,'' said Zoran Kostic, the project manager of "Hotel Valkane".

Pula's city councilors are generally not opposed to the idea of the construction of Hotel Valkane, except for those from the political party Mozemo (We Can!)

''Mozemo! has already initiated the third changes to the urban development plan of the promande, which can remove the hotel or reduce its size,'' the president of the Pula City Council Dusica Radojcic told HRT.

Most of Pula's local residents are allegedly not happy at all about the construction of this massive hotel

''It's not that it shouldn't be built, but maybe not in this place, maybe we'd rather build a sports centre or something like that here, use it a little better, build a better stadium, than build another hotel here. It's just a little too big, that hotel, in my opinion the two floors above should not protrude over everything as they would do,'' are just some of the comments of Pula's residents.

Despite the apparent dissatisfaction of the local residents he represents, Pula's mayor sees no issue...

''This is an excellent development project, the first five-star hotel that will be environmentally sustainable, one that won't touch any of the trees in the forest and has all the predispositions to be a new development point in the City of Pula and preserve the space we're in,'' said Mayor Filip Zoricic.

Mozemo is currently insisting on a referendum on building Hotel Valkane. They've warned that the entire part of the Pula coast has been privatised in a murky way and are as such calling on state institutions to do their jobs and investigate this matter more deeply.

With Pula's residents and Mozemo apparently vehemently against the hotel's construction, but with the mayor and the city government willing to give it a green light, will a referendum be held in which Pula's citizens might say no to the hotel, or will the investor get a location and construction permit and start building it? Time will tell for Hotel Valkane's fate.

ZAGREB, 5 May 2022 - The City of Pula on Thursday marked its day and the 77th liberation anniversary with a City Council session attended by President Zoran Milanović.

Congratulating the people of Pula on their day, he recalled the time when "Croatian Partisans added Istria to Croatia" and Istria, notably Pula, was not populated only by Croats. Tens of thousands of people left Istria, he said.

"In order to be able to morally ask some things from others, we must admit what happened in Istria. I see this level of maturity and honesty in Istria. I'm glad to look at this multiculturalism and this unity, the awareness of one's own shortcomings and omissions, but also the energy and desire to build better, to let go of some things and move on," the president said, urging the people of Istria to absorb as much from EU funds as possible.

"Croatia... now lives the European reality. But Europe is also a Europe of first, second and even third-rank states," he said, adding that one must never consent to that.

"We invested our sovereignty in Europe... That has its price, its moral obligation. As a state, we renounce certain rights... to invest them in a common project, which is Europe, and to get something out of it," Milanović said, adding that "Croatia is taking too little money from the European Union."

The only measure of success of both state and local politics is "solely the success in taking the money that is ours," he said.

"That's the goal we should strive for, that's the key task of Croatian politics. The war in Ukraine won't solve the big problems in any way. I don't like the expression 'that is not our war', but we must watch what we do, say and where we align ourselves and look out for our interests."

The German low-cost airline, Eurowings, a member of the Lufthansa Group, is resuming traffic on a number of seasonal routes to several Croatian airports in May this year. These are lines from Germany to Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik, reports Croatian Aviation.

Hamburg, 4 to 5 times a week, except Wednesdays and Fridays,

Cologne, 4 to 5 times a week, except Mondays and Wednesdays,

Dortmund, 2 times a week, Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Lines to Dubrovnik:

Berlin, from 01.05, once a week, on Sundays,

Dusseldorf, once a week, Saturday / Sunday,

Hamburg, from 08.05, once a week, Sundays,

Stuttgart, once a week, on Saturdays.

Lines to Zagreb:

Cologne, 6 times a week except for Saturday,

Dusseldorf, 3 times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays,

Stuttgart, 5 times a week except for Tuesdays and Saturdays.

According to current announcements, Eurowings will have more than 50 weekly flights on 23 international routes to 6 Croatian airports in May. Although the number of rotations to Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, and Dubrovnik will be relatively small, which is expected at the beginning of operations, the airline plans to increase the number of flights in June, which will certainly depend on demand for all flights in the coming weeks.

Eurowings is planning A319 and A320 aircraft on the routes to Croatia, which have a capacity of 144 to 180 seats in the passenger cabin.
