February 4, 2022 - The latest news about flights to Croatia as the Ukraine International Airlines Kyiv-Split line has been boosted for the 2022 summer season. 

Croatian Aviation reports that Ukraine International Airlines has announced a number of weekly flights between Kyiv and Split in the upcoming summer flight schedule.

Namely, Ukraine International plans to increase the number of weekly flights to Croatia this summer. Thus, from the beginning of June to the end of September this year, three flights a week have been announced, one more than last summer season. These three-weekly flights will operate on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

Apart from Split, Ukraine International also flies to Pula in Croatia. For this summer season, the airline plans to keep two flights a week, as it did in the summer of 2021. B737-800 aircraft have been announced on both routes.

Windrose Airlines, Ukraine's second-largest airline, does not currently offer scheduled flights to Pula and Split this summer. Croatian Aviation adds that with the current pressure of the global pandemic on passenger demand itself, the question is how many Ukrainian tourists will travel to Croatia on vacation this summer, primarily due to the political situation in their country. Therefore, the realization of regular flights between Ukraine and Croatia in the upcoming summer months will depend on that.

In addition to many summer flight announcements, Split Airport isn't all too bleak this winter, either. Croatian Aviation reports that Split Airport has released its statistics for January, confirming great results considering the time of year and the state of the pandemic. 

Split Airport recorded a significant increase in the number of passengers compared to January last year. Namely, in January 2021, there were only 7,753 passengers in Split, while this year, there were 20,400. Split Airport also recorded more than 55% of passenger traffic from January 2020. 

The most significant credit for the number of passengers in January certainly goes to Croatia Airlines, which connects Split with Frankfurt, Rome, Zagreb, and Munich daily, and KLM flights to Amsterdam and Eurowings flights to German cities.

Given the current traffic and the results from February last year, there is no doubt that the growth in the number of passengers in Split will continue, while the percentage growth will undoubtedly be lower in the summer months. Even more new routes to Split for this summer season should also be announced in the coming weeks.

February 4, 2022 - MISODIS partners with OŠ Kralja Zvonimira and trnsfr.hr to offer a hybrid model public school program tailored for expat families and foreign children in Split and its surroundings.

After starting the web project M.I.S.O.D.I.S (Multilingual International School Of Dalmatia In Split) in 2017, an important step has now been taken by partnering with the elementary school OŠ Kralja Zvonimira in Solin and agreeing on creating a welcoming place for foreign children and the families who want to move to the Split region. 

The school administration of the OŠ Kralja Zvonimira elementary school in Solin has agreed with Burak Canboy of the MISODIS project to welcome foreign children to their school immediately and has agreed on the future scope of cooperation.  

Until the end of May 2022, OŠ Kralja Zvonimira elementary school has agreed to review applications from foreign children (grades 1 to 8) to start visiting the school for the upcoming school year (2022/2023) even if the children are not living in the school’s district. The acceptance will be based on available space and existing class sizes and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The school offers a full-day program (from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm) for children of grades 1 to 3. Children in grades 4-8 will be on bi-weekly shifts switching between morning and afternoon programs. Children who will newly arrive in Croatia will be supported by the school with the intensive Croatian language preparation course "pripremna nastava" and MISODIS will support the parents with advice and with contacts to online teachers and tutors.

"Apart from the very good vibe and already existing experience the school has with foreign children, I was extremely impressed by the school's attitude towards implementing technical equipment and the immediate switch to online schooling to cope with the COVID-19 situation. With its motivated staff, new buildings, up-to-date equipment, kitchen facilities, and easy access from Split, Trogir, Omiš, and Sinj the elementary school OŠ Kralja Zvonimira is a perfect partner for our program," states Burak Canboy.

Ladina Putovanja d.o.o. with its VIP shuttle service trsnsfr.hr has offered to support the program with an at-cost service for families that wish to have their children picked up from home in the morning and dropped back off after school.

For the future, it is planned to also offer a full-day program for foreign children in grades 4-8 as a hybrid solution. The children will then participate in the regular public school program but would be able to stay on-site to participate in language classes and activities organized by MISODIS based on the needs of each foreign child. Additional fun activities would be made available off-site with local youth organizations. Such courses like climbing, robotics, creation of video content, art, programming, language courses, and more are already being reviewed.

February 3, 2022 - It has been exactly 10 years since we experienced the unforgettable snow day in Split, thanks to Cyclone Gabor in February 2012. A look at the best (and worst) moments. 

Thanks to the legendary Cyclone Gabor, February 2012 will be remembered in Croatian meteorological history. This cyclone was chosen as the largest meteorological event in Croatia in the last 10 years by the Crometeo team.

And now, exactly 10 years have passed since the winter storm of the century in Split and Dalmatia, reports Dalmacija Danas.

The meteorological scenario that day read:

After a short calming of the weather on the night of February 2, Dalmatia was hit by precipitation brought by the upcoming cyclone. Cyclone Gabor brought heavy snow to northern and most of central Dalmatia (it did not fall only in Makarska and the surrounding area), and the situation was complicated in the interior of Dalmatia. On the morning of February 3, Metković measured 27 cm of snow, Ploče 14 cm, Šibenik 10 cm, and Split 8 cm. With the snowstorm in Split, the temperature was -5°C in the morning, and in Šibenik -6°C. The snow continued to fall throughout the day, so at 7 pm Šibenik measured 20 cm of snow, Split and Ploče 14 cm, and Zadar 7 cm.

In consultation with the Protection and Rescue Headquarters, and due to the endangered safety of pedestrians and drivers due to winter conditions, the Mayor of Split Željko Kerum declared it a non-working day ("snow day") for kindergartens and schools in Split, as well as for employees of the city administration and city companies, except for those services that are necessary to control winter conditions.

After the snowstorm, on the night of February 3-4 and during February 4, icy rain fell in central Dalmatia, which brought additional problems. By the end of Saturday, February 4, the rain turned to snow again, and in the evening, Split measured the historic 25 cm of snow, which broke the previous record of 21 cm from January 1979.

Due to the adverse weather, County Prefect Ante Sanader declared a state of emergency in Split-Dalmatia County on February 4, and a natural disaster was declared in Šibenik-Knin County. From February 3-4, icy rain also fell on Pelješac. As a result, nearly 1,000 people were left without electricity, water, and telephone connections, and significant damage was done.

The Cyclone Gabor snowstorm was accompanied by a severe cold that intensified day by day. On Friday, February 3, at 9 pm in Zavižan, with an air temperature of -22 ° C and a stormy east wind of 22 m / s (79.2 km / h), the real cold feel was -41°C. A day later, the highest daily temperature in Zavižan was -20.8°C. In the history of meteorological measurements on Zavižan (since 1954), lower values of the highest daily temperature were measured in just two days.

February 1, 2022 - The first speakers have been revealed for Green Future Conference that will bring together Croatian and global technology leaders in Split on June 9th and 10th. The conference is sponsored by Rimac and Infobip. 

At the beginning of June, the City of Split will become the center point for exchanging knowledge, experiences, new technologies, solutions, and innovative green transition politics - all of the processes that will become imperative for Croatia, the European Union, and worldwide in the following years. On the 9th and 10th of June, the Croatian National Theater in Split will host the Green Future Conference. This event will bring together 'the best of Croatia' and global technology leaders in technology and public policies to speed up the processes in this part of Europe. 

The date of the conference was not chosen by accident - the new programming period brings significant grants with which the European Union wants to encourage sustainable investments, innovations, new job opportunities in Europe, and fair transition to achieve the 2050 climate neutrality goal. It's an opportunity not to be missed. 

The participants will have the opportunity to listen to Matija Žulj, founder of AGRIVI, a startup for digital innovations in agriculture that has provided over 50 million HRK in investments. Today they help companies worldwide produce nutritious, healthy, and sustainable food by digitizing agricultural production and supply chains. 

Federico Christophoroni, one of the speakers, is the co-founder and CEO of Eutopia, a platform with more than 16.000 startups in Europe developing climate change solutions. The platform also provides data, insights, and software tools to help policymakers, investors, and corporations make informed decisions. 

Ivica Puljak, Mayor of Split, an internationally recognized physicist, a longtime advocate of the popularisation of science and applying new technologies, will participate in a panel on public policies together with representatives of European cities who have already achieved the results that await us.

Trpkov, an entrepreneur, investor, and longtime World Bank consultant in the areas of competitiveness and energy. She specializes in low-carbon transition, digital transformation, and smart cities. The European Commission has chosen her as a leading expert for two out of three Croatian cities involved in the '100 Intelligent Cities Challenge' initiative.

In Split, we will bring together global and Croatian technology leaders, companies, institutions, decision-makers, scientists, and other stakeholders from the sustainable development sector. We aim to raise awareness and learn about the green transition, finance it, and implement effective public policies that will lead to behavior change, faster technological innovations, and meet the 2050 climate neutrality goal. The conference is technology-oriented, but we'll by no means omit people - decision-makers, entrepreneurial leaders, and citizens. The whole thing starts with us and ends with us. January 29, 2022 - "The project's visual identity is inspired by lines that represent somewhat chaotic directions of movement, roads, and shortcuts inside Diocletian's Palace, while the slogan highlights a whole new story within the old town." A look at the Palace of Life, City of Changes visual identity. 

Palace of Life, City of Changes, is a project in which the Old Town Hall on Split's Pjaca (Narodni trg) was renovated, followed by the renovation of the courtyard and ground floor of the Split City Museum (MGS), which will become accessible to people with disabilities by installing an elevator. Through this project, the southeastern tower of Diocletian's Palace with the Lukačićeva 5 building will be reconstructed and presented to the public, reports the City of Split.

"The project co-financed the renovation and equipping of five buildings, which will provide a unique insight into the invaluable cultural heritage of the historic center of Split and the introduction of new content and presentations of space that have been neglected for years. In addition, the old town hall has been renovated following the latest needs of modern exhibition space. Project documentation is being prepared by Office Vojnović d.o.o. based on which work will soon begin on the above facilities," said Radojka Tomašević, Head of the Service for International and EU Projects, who heads the project implementation team by the City of Split in cooperation with partners - Split Tourist Board and Split City Museum.

Split studio Kazinoti & Komenda designed and created the project's visual identity. Karlo Kazinoti and Mišo Komenda have already been recognized for their quality and memorable design solutions to numerous cultural projects, but this is undoubtedly the most significant Split project they have worked on. The set task resulted in a dynamic identity of pronounced color in which they summed up the directions of movement through the countless streets of Split's historic core:

“The design was created as a reduction of the palace to four squares, i.e., towers, while the walls were completely erased to suggest openness and metaphorically depict life spreading outside the palace. The lines as a formative element are inspired by the somewhat chaotic directions of movement, roads, shortcuts inside the palace created by life within the walls. In the end, we see a similar network of intertwined directions when looking at the sky because of the clothesline (tiramola)," explained Kazinoti & Komenda.

The extended function of this design allows the grid of lines to be applied as a graphic pattern or framed within a given format as needed. The font Spalat by prof. Nikola Đurek and the project's name were accompanied by the slogan "Old Split. New Story."

“The goal was to communicate the novelties in the palace, i..e., the old part of the city, but the specificity is that these 'novelties' are centuries-old heritage, so we drew a parallel between the old and the new. We are erasing the border between them because part of the unknown heritage, which, together with many visitors, will be revived only now and become - new," explained Karlo Kazinoti.

Thanks to investments through the Palace of Life project, the citizens of Split will get a new perspective, the opportunity to enjoy the view of the city from the eastern wall of Diocletian's Palace and from the terrace of the Southeast Tower, which will house the interpretation center and exhibition space. Since its opening, the old town hall has attracted visitors of all generations with an excellent exhibition "Judita 500". At the same time, the Split City Museum on the ground floor and renovated courtyard of the Papalić Palace will receive a new, modernized exhibition that will provide visitors with a completely new experience of old stories.

Palace of Life, City of Changes, is one of the most significant investment projects in the restoration and revitalization of the cultural heritage of Split in more than 60 years, more precisely since the opening of Diocletian's cellars. The project also includes the development of the Old Town Management Plan and the Visitor Management Action Plan. The total estimated value of the project is HRK 25.4 million, of which HRK 18.2 million is a grant from the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund.

January 29, 2022 - It'll be a replay of the 2018 World Cup final, with the Croatian Football Federation announcing the 2022 Nations League match between Croatia and France will be played at Poljud on June 6, 2022. 

The Croatian Football Federation Executive Board has decided on the venues for the Croatia national team matches in the UEFA Nations League, opening in June this year, reports HNS. 

The 2018 World Cup finalist will host Austria on June 3 at City Garden Stadium in Osijek (20:45), and three days later a replay of the 2018 World Cup final between Croatia and France at Poljud in Split. The long-awaited spectacle against the 2018 world champions will also be played in the evening (20:45).

In this June mini-cycle, the Croatia national team will also face Denmark (June 10) and France (June 13), both away. Croatia completes the Nations League in September with Denmark at home (September 22) and Austria away on September 25 (stadium to be determined). 

Thus, four Nations League rounds will be played from June 2 to 14, and the remaining two in the second half of September (from 22 to 27).

The Croatian Football Federation will announce ticket sale information in due time, but if the final 2022 World Cup qualifying match against Russia last November tells us anything, we can expect a sellout at Poljud Stadium in June - with hopefully much nicer weather. 

Croatia will not rest at the end of March, either. While the remaining second-placed European national teams will play additional World Cup qualifications, Croatia could play up to three friendly matches as part of their World Cup preparations.

Furthermore, the World Cup group draw will be held on April 1, 2022, in Doha. On that day, coach Dalić and the players will learn the three national teams they will compete against in the group stage of the World Cup. The 2022 World Cup will be hosted by Qatar from November 21 to December 18 this year.

January 27, 2022 - Split area public bike system (Split, Solin, Trogir, Kastela, Podstrana, Klis, Dugopolje, and Dicmo) will receive 41 new stations with a total of 242 bicycles!

Representatives of cities and municipalities from the Split Urban Agglomeration area and project partners in the "Choose a bike!" project held a working video meeting on preparations to implement the public bicycle systems. As it was said at the meeting, the first deliveries of bicycles by the project partner "Nextbike" will follow in February, and preparations to install bicycle stations and power connections at other locations are underway, reports Grad Split.

The work on installing terminals in the whole urban agglomeration should be completed in the next few months. The first functional stations would be located in the Podstrana area, and the locations are already ready to receive bicycles. It was pointed out that most of the new contingent of bikes is planned to be set up in the Marjan Forest Park area and the city's outskirts. The construction and marking of bicycle roads in the Trogir area are expected to be completed by the middle of the year at the latest. As part of the activities of this integrated project, the City of Split and seven partners - cities and municipalities from the Split urban agglomeration (Solin, Trogir, Kastela, Podstrana, Klis, Dugopolje, and Dicmo), will receive 41 new stations with a total of 242 bicycles. In short, from the beginning of summer, the area from Podstrana to Trogir and from Split to Dicmo will be connected by a system of public bicycles.

The "Choose a bicycle!" strategic project is co-financed by the European Union within the ITU Call "Urban Mobility - Development of public bicycle systems in the Urban Agglomeration of Split." The project application was prepared by the Development Agency Split - RaST, with the support of the Service for International and EU Projects of the City of Split, which is now leading the project. The project's total value is HRK 13.6 million, of which the grant amounts to a total of HRK 10.8 million. This project to develop the public bicycle system is planned to popularize bicycles as an alternative form of public transport. An indispensable part is developing and improving the network of cycling infrastructure, which will enable faster access to public transport stops and serve as an upgrade of the existing form of public transport in the Split urban agglomeration.

These 41 new locations with bicycle terminals will be distributed in eight local self-government units following the analysis of needs and possibilities for the implementation of the system, as follows:

City of Split: 16 terminals with 50 electric and 20 classic bicycles.

City of Solin: 6 terminals with 12 electric and 26 classic bicycles.

City of Trogir: 3 terminals with 10 electric and 10 classic bicycles.

Kaštela: 6 terminals with 30 electric and 30 classic bicycles.

Municipality of Podstrana: 2 terminals with 6 electric and 6 classic bicycles.

Municipality of Klis: 2 terminals with 4 electric and 8 classic bicycles.

Municipality of Dugopolje: 4 terminals with 10 electric and 10 classic bicycles.

Municipality of Dicmo: 2 terminals with 4 electric and 6 classic bicycles.

January 27, 2022 - The owner of ''Semafor'', one of the cult cafés in Split, has asked the authorities to reconsider the decision to demolish the enclosed terraces in the city, arguing that it is the best alternative due to the winds and temperatures both in and out of season.

Caterers who have enclosed terraces in the public city area will not be able to extend the lease if they do not comply with the new regulations. If such a decision stands, it is certain that the cult place in the city could close its doors, reports Slobodna Dalmacija.

Café "Semafor", which opened back in 1970, will have its contract for the lease of public urban space expire just before the season, in May. As the closed terrace has been considered an illegal space based on new regulations, its only option is to switch to only tables and parasols instead.

''My terrace is not illegal and cannot be declared as such. It is just not in line with the Decision on Communal Order, which came into force less than a year ago. The public gets the wrong impression that this terrace has been standing there illegally for 40 or even 50 years. I have a permit from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments from 1984, in which "Semafor" is allowed to set up awnings, new flower fences and plexiglass walls, a new stone floor, and set up an outdoor bar'', argues Željan Radman, the owner of "Semafor".

''I never set up an outdoor bar, and the plexiglass wall was replaced with an aesthetically, more beautiful, glass one'', adds Radman. He indicates that he regularly pays the rent for the use of public space and that he does not owe the City a single kuna.

''No one will sit there in the winter. I think it is necessary to review the situation, make a decision, and avoid saying that there can be literally nothing but parasols. At least some kind of pergola... Wind protection of 1.60 meters of fence is mentioned only in zones three and four, not in the center''.

''Then why would people even come to the center for coffee? This decision on communal order, and its dates, were made in the last term. I don't think the new government should blindly adhere to those deadlines, there is a possibility that some annex may extend that deadline so that everyone can keep this season intact'', Radman appeals, noting that in this situation the government should find a little empathy and not put all the terraces in the same basket.

''In the first zone, things are not the same everywhere. The same in the second zone. There are terraces that may or may not fit into the overall picture. I have to pay special attention to the platform on which the tables and chairs are set. Umbrellas would cost me around 250 to 300 thousand kuna, and all this is a new investment in times when caterers are on their knees. Now the banks do not give us loans because of the whole situation with COVID'', pointed the Semafor owner.

Radman believes the media has created a misconception that caterers made "billions" last season.

''In two years we have not worked for more than six or seven months. Two years ago, in 2020, the season was bad, interrupted in mid-August. Last year the season was only two good months. We cannot make up for two years of total catastrophe in two months'', Radman points out. ''If this decision by the previous government is implemented, we can only hope for the best'', he adds.

''Or I can close "Semafor" after 50 years of work, which raised generations of Split citizens, and I can rent space to someone else for a casino, a pharmacy, a shoe store... I don't even know what to do''.

''Let those who made such a decision come to me for coffee and sit for an hour in the terrace without protection from the wind'', Radman says. He wonders, ''if there can no longer be awnings in the first zone, what will happen to the ones in front of the fish market or all awnings on the waterfront?''

''I wouldn't ruin it. That is why I think that each space should be viewed individually'', says Željan Radman, who recalled the project task of arranging King Tomislav Street into Split Olympians Street, which was accepted by the City Council and taken over by Split architect Vjekoslav Ivanišević.

In that project, which was never realized, Radman notes, the "Semafor" café was supposed to move the terrace away from the baroque ramparts and keep the bar's glazed terrace.

January 26, 2022 – Following one cancelled year and a hesitant 2021, Croatian Music Festivals in 2022 look to return to normal operations. Even before the end of January 2022, two favourite events in Tisno, Dalmatia – Defected Croatia and Dekmantel Selectors – have this week sold out all tickets!

For a whole new generation of young dreamers and visitors, Croatia is on their annual wish list because of its music festivals. Set by pristine waters and beaches, in the guaranteed sunshine of a Dalmatian summer, photos of Croatia's music festivals have travelled across the world and brought international acclaim.

In 2020, all of these music festivals (except veteran domestic events at Martinska, Šibenik) were cancelled. Even in 2021, neither full confidence nor the full schedule had returned – Ultra Europe (Split) and Love International (Tisno) remained absent.

However, if early indications are anything to go by, trust in the summertime spectaculars seems to have completely returned for Croatian Music festivals in 2022. In fact, even before the end of January 2022, two favourite events in Tisno, Dalmatia – Defected Croatia and Dekmantel Selectors – have this week announced they've sold out.

News revealed exclusively to Total Croatia News informs that the rest of the summer music festivals held at The Garden Resort, Tisno are not far behind - almost all are within sight of completely selling out all tickets.

The longest-running festival associated with The Garden resort, Suncebeat traces its love affair with Croatia back to Petrcane, near Zadar, over 12 years ago. Actually, Suncebeat's heritage is even older – it's a spin-off event of the UK's 30+-year-old Southport Weekender. It, therefore, draws a slightly older crowd of house, disco and soul music aficionados.

Šibenik Music Festivals 2022 – Martinska, Seasplash and Project Vojarna

Martinska

Located on a perfectly secluded seaside peninsula, just outside the city of Šibenik, the Martinska venue hosts a summer-long run of intimate music festivals within fantastic natural surroundings. Events range from punk music and live concerts to more modern electronic styles. Most famous internationally is the reggae and dub event Seasplash Festival which celebrates its 20th birthday between July 14th - 17th 2022.

Project Vojarna

Just over half a decade old, Project Vojarna is a dance music event born from the collaboration of Šibenik electronic music enthusiasts. In its current standing, the main event is a 10-hour open-air rave held at a former military barracks just outside Šibenik. Each year the event grows in fame and stature. This year's event will take place on 23 July.

The largest and most prestigious event for rock music and alternative in Croatia, InMusic has certainly put the country – and Zagreb – firmly on the international rock festival map. Taking place around Zagreb's Lake Jarun, the festival site welcomes campers from all over Europe for its four-day run.

BSH Island

BSH Island is one of the jewels in the Croatian festival crown and has been leading the way in the local scene in recent years. Its first edition in 2020 brought something new to the region, and the follow up in 2021 made a mark on the international stage and now it returns to Island of Pag for the bigger than ever third edition. This follows two much talked about festivals on Zrce Beach - BSH Island, which included a legendary party in the breathtaking 17th century Fortress overlooking the sea hosted by Amnesia Ibiza, and the epic Amnesia takeover Croatia festival. It was a truly unique experience that offered something completely fresh away from the clubs on Zrce beach, and when you add in the fact that accommodation came in the form of a beautiful yacht docked at Noa Beach Club, it's no wonder BSH Island has made such a special impact.

Taking place from Sunday 3rd July - Thursday 7th July, Hideout Festival 2022 is representative of this return to form. January 25, 2022 - It has been a long time coming, but Marjan Park cameras will be set up in nine locations to record and track visitors, with free Wifi for citizens and tourists planned as well. 

Marjan Forest Park management intends to set up a system and equipment for recording, tracking, and controlling visitors, as well as a system for public wireless internet access for all park visitors, reports Slobodna Dalmacija.

Two bids were received to procure and install the equipment in Marjan Forest Park. The community of providers "Smartnet" and "Alsace alarms" offers a service of 739 thousand kuna, and the company "Securitas Croatia" made an offer of 745 thousand kuna.

According to the cost estimate, the visitor monitoring system and internet access would be set up in nine locations: the northern Marjan Gate, the southern Marjan Gate, the "Water Reservoir" entrance, Bene, Sedlo, Telegrin, the Botanical Garden, the Zoo, and the First Lookout. 

Slobodna Dalmacija spoke to the acting Director of the Public Institution, Stipe Mušura, about how the new cameras would work. 

"This would be about the same as in other protected areas, a camera that records the entry of visitors. Pure electronics are at stake. We have examples in other protected areas, this is nothing new," Mušura said. 

However, when asked if they would be identification cameras, which will be able to determine the identity of the visitor, Mušur said that he did not know and that it was only important for them to install the devices. 

"The public procurement procedure is ongoing. Upon completion we will give the required answers," he added. 

Slobodna Dalmacija also learned that public access to the Internet on Marjan would not be charged, and as Mušura said, "it would be a free support for citizens and tourists".
