December 8, 2019 - The second Gastroadvent Sunday was held on December 8, 2019, at the finest steakhouse in Split - Chops Grill. This time, rosemary, goat cheese, wine and olive oil from Šolta, and radio journalists were in the Advent spotlight.

Gastroadvent is a unique manifestation that fuses nutrition, gastronomy, and tourism while highlighting some of Split’s favorite restaurants on the less busy days of December. For the past ten years, the event has promoted the Mediterranean diet and has left a mark through its work on Mediterranean ingredients.

Thus, every Sunday of December, valuable hosts, patrons, partners and journalists gather to honor not only the light they bring to Split, but also to recognize the integral ingredients found in the Mediterranean region.
And this year, the central ingredient of Gastroadvent is invaluable to the city of Split.
Namely, rosemary is a fundamental part of the Mediterranean diet. It is originally from Europe and has been used since ancient times when students decorated their heads with rosemary wreaths, thinking that it has a beneficial effect on memory. Rosemary leaves and the essential oil obtained by distilling leaves are officially medicinal according to European regulations. Rosemary leaf contains natural phenolic compounds and is therefore considered medicine and a spice. By its antioxidant properties, it is the most potent food. It grows on rocky soil, withstands salt and high temperatures, and its habitat is carbonate rocks.

Rosemary could not exist without its home, stone. The same stone that Diocletian's Palace is made of, which was protected 40 years ago by UNESCO. This year's Gastroadvent wreath is made of stone and was crafted by the students of the Stonemasonry School in Pucisca, Brac, which boasts 120 years of existence.
Furthermore, goat cheese is higher in nutrients than all other cheeses. Last year, archaeological excavations near Šibenik revealed that Dalmatia is the home of goat cheese. Namely, according to the American scientists who analyzed and found the DNA of fats in vessels during the excavation, goat cheese was produced in Dalmatia some 7,200 years ago!
Thus, on Sunday, the famed chef at Chops Grill crafted a unique menu illuminating these indispensable ingredients of the Mediterranean.
For starters, guests enjoyed lollipops of dates and prunes, with crumbles of hazelnut, pistachios and rosemary, Christmas eggs filled with a foam of potatoes and an aroma of Adriatic pine, truffle and rosemary sabayon, creme fraiche and caviar. The savory ‘Oreo’ was made of coffee and dehydrated black olives stuffed with foie gras cream, parmesan, and goat cheese, while the nori algae cone was filled with quinoa in rosemary oil, tuna pancetta tartar, and caviar of trout and chives.

The pasta galettes featured a spicy tomato sauce and Ichiban dashi from black Slavonian pig, while the cod confit was mixed with Mediterranean herbs, kale, potatoes, seaweed and plankton pil-pil. The warm beef wellington was served with potato and rosemary and Perigord sauce of black truffle.

For the sweet moment, in the end, guests could choose from chocolate cupcakes to doughnuts, fresh fruit, goat cheese, white chocolate, white truffle and rosemary honey, and Christmas gingerbread.

All bites were paired with the Dobričič Villa Superior wine from the island of Šolta, made from grapes of autochthonous Dobričić variety, and characterized by a dark and opaque color. It boasted an intense cherry flavor with a touch of blueberry jam, while the smell could be attributed to dried fruits such as dried figs, nuts or even dried tobacco leaves. The vineyard is located on the rocky southern part of the island and is surrounded by huge drywalls. The vineyard was planted in the early 1960s and is a monument to the time when the production of wine on Šolta was an important factor in the survival of its inhabitants. This vineyard witnessed the decline and near disappearance of this valuable variety, as well as its revitalization. Its longevity definitely affects the rich structure and robustness of this wine.

You might also recognize the Šolta Olive Oil on offer after it was crowned "The Best in Class" as the best oil in the class of environmentally friendly monosortic oil of medium intensity in the world at the New York International Olive Oil Competition back in May.

This edition of Gastroadvent even had an environmental touch, as eco nautical starter boxes were displayed to encourage keeping the Adriatic clean.

Gastroadvent is held every Sunday of Advent at a different location in Split. Total Split will be reporting all December long.

December 7, 2019 - Matea Jelic (67 kg, Marjan) and Kristina Tomic (49 kg, Osvit) could be joined by Toni Kanaet (80 kg, Marjan) at the Olympic Games next summer.
Namely, T.portal writes that Split taekwondo club member Marjan Matea Jelic will perform at the Tokyo Olympics next year! This is thanks to Matea’s incredible result at the final Grand Prix in Moscow, with only 16 of the best competing in each Olympic category.
Matea won the silver medal in the 67-kg category with an incredible 48 points to jump into third place in the Olympic rankings.
In the first round, she celebrated at the last second against the unfavorable Kazakhstanski athlete Nigora Tursunkulova 10:8, in the quarterfinals she beat three-time European champion, Lauren Wiliams, with a score of 34:32, while in the semifinals she was better than French athlete Magda Wiet Henin 8:7, who has won three European and one world championship medal.
In the final match, Matea lost 14:15 to Ruth Gbagbi, world champion and bronze medalist at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
After an unfortunate defeat at the last second of the fight for a medal at the World Cup in Manchester, Matea Jelic achieved a fantastic series of top results - the gold at the Grand Prix in Rome, silver at the Grand Prix in Chiba, bronze at the European Championship in Bari and as the icing on the cake, the silver in the Grand Prix final.
Jelic thus continued the series of placement at the Olympic Games for the Split taekwondo club Marjan, after Ana and Lucia Zaninovic in 2012 in London and 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
Although Kristina Tomic (49 kg) lost in the second round to Serbian Tiana Bogdanovic, also secured her spot in Tokyo thanks to her total points and victory in the first round against Zeliha Agris (22:14).
Finally, the European champion, Toni Kanaet, who is in the last (sixth) place to get a visa for the Olympics, is just one step away from the same success as Jelic and Tomic. However, for him to secure a spot in Tokyo, his Korean competitor must not be the winner of the Grand Slam series.

December 6, 2019 - Promet Split signed a contract to purchase ten new Mercedes articulated buses as part of the project “Procuring buses for Promet d.o.o. Split from ITU Mechanisms”.
Splitski Dnevnik writes that purchasing another 40 buses, which is expected to be completed in the next year, should reduce the age of the transport fleet to 4 and a half years, says Miroslav Delić, the director of the Split public transport company.
“In the middle of this year, we signed contracts for eight buses under this program, so next year we should complete the story with 52 new buses. If we also mention the possibility of new 40 buses, including four electric buses, which opens a new era in public transport, then we can say that one important step has been made, both for us and the co-owners, as well as for the new administration. Thus, next year, around this time, we should have a completely changed fleet of Promet buses, about a hundred of them,” said Split Mayor Andro Krstulović Opara.
The value of this bus purchase is 30 million kuna, excluding VAT, and the city will pay only 15 percent because the rest of the money has been acquired from European funds. The City of Split will pay 4 million kuna for this procurement, and the remainder is already in the co-owners' budgets, adds the mayor of Split. The value of both projects amounted to 137 million kuna.
“At the beginning of the year, when I took office, I pointed out the problem with the age of our fleet, which was 13 and a half years old at the time. After purchasing the first 34 buses, the age dropped to 9 and a half years, and from these additional 18, we get to 7 and a half years. When we resolve these additional 40 buses by the beginning of 2021, the average age of the transport fleet should be four and a half years,” Delić points out, adding that this would mean that Promet would be below the average of the countries they are compared to, and 80 percent of its fleet will consist of buses up to one and a half years old. There was a lot of work involved in participating in these projects.
"Of the nine cities that participated in procuring the first contingent of 34 buses, we were the only ones who went without a contract and penalty adjustments of 5 to 20 percent for each utility company, and when you know it's a 93 million kuna project, you know how much it would cost.
Once we identified the liquidity of the company at the beginning of the year and mentioned the problems with the fleet age, ticketing, no restructuring of the company, no systematization in the last 30 years and many other problems, I can now tell you that in the spring of 2021, all of these problems will be solved, and I am sure of that,” Delić is clear.
Today, there are around 1200 -1300 departures on all routes, with an average of 80,000 people transporting daily.

December 4, 2019 - If anyone is still wondering why Ultra Europe in Split is such a hit, the official 2019 after movie should clear up any doubts.
Dalmacija Danas writes that in nine minutes, the Ultra Europe Aftermovie tells the marvelous story of a music giant that has become one of the symbols of Split and Croatia. Three magnificent festival days at Split's Park Mladezi stadium were presented to the world in a magnificent film produced by Final Kid, and for the first time, Zagreb and many other fairy-tale Croatian locations are shown. For those who have not yet felt the magic and infectious energy of this unique destination festival, this will be more than a great invitation to join thousands of electronic music fans next summer.
The Ultra Europe Aftermovie traditionally comes out at the end of the year, with over 13 million views so far.
The directing and editing are again credited to Charly Friedrichs and Diogo Camargo, and the film's superb quality is the result of the work of the talented and expert Final Kid Films film crew. All the footage was shot with RED digital movie cameras and top-notch equipment, and for a visual experience to be complete, all footage is in 4K resolution. More than 3 million kuna has been invested in the production of this nine-minute reminder of the best moments of the festival - and the live stream of the festival itself, which has been viewed in more than 124 countries around the world on Youtube and Facebook, has seen over 7 million views.
This year's film begins in the largest Croatian metropolis, with attractive views of the Zagreb Cathedral, Strossmayer Promenade, Upper Town, Central Station and the airport. The after movie also stars Croatian models Luna Valas and Paula Puškas, who take viewers on a journey through some of the most recognizable parts of Croatia. Swimming under the Krka waterfalls, walking through Primosten, and driving to Klis are just a few of the locations featured in the film, and girls are joined by another famous fashion name, Patrik Cvetko, on the way to Split.
“This was a truly special adventure and filming this will remain in my memory forever. We often forget how beautiful our country is, and to be able to visit it as a tourist, to feel the magic of its fairy-tale locations and to finally meet, socialize and dance with people from all over the world, was an unforgettable experience. I believe that the film will appeal to everyone and will show that our country is not only beautiful and worth visiting, but that we know how to do a top-notch and unique event and be a real host to the young people who come here from all over the world,” said Luna Valas.
After the spectacular scenes of the packed Park Mladezi lawn and fireworks above the big central stage, the film crew takes you to the other stages, RESISTANCE and UMF. Ultranauts are reminded of some of the performances of the DJs that marked the record-breaking festival release - Swedish House Mafia, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, DJ Snake, Afrojack, Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Maceo Plex, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano - and showed the fans of this festival why they are the best and love coming back to Split.
“The seventh edition of Ultra Europe will be remembered for its numerous achievements and record numbers, and we are sure that the seventh Aftermovie will join the trend. It is a film that has an invaluable marketing and tourist value in promoting Croatia worldwide, especially for the target segment of young people aged 18 to 28. Bearing in mind all the potential and power of our films, which have been viewed by over 13 million people so far, we decided to start this year's trip to Split in Zagreb. Namely, during the festival, the Split Airport operates at full capacity, so our goal is to increase the number of arrivals and to direct our guests to use Zagreb and the Zagreb airport as an incoming destination. In addition to extending their stay, we will also give them the opportunity to experience continental and coastal Croatia,” said Joe Bašić, CEO of MPG Live, organizer of the festival.
Choosing a musical backdrop is vital for creating a successful emotional film to remind you of the most beautiful festival moments. The production team selected four singles that perfectly accompany the story - You & Me, performed by Futuristic Polar Bears, Daffy Muffin's Select, Tom Staar & Trace's East Soul, and Tim van Werd's Break the Night.
As the second-largest event in the Ultra Worldwide family, Ultra Europe announces a new experience with more than 160,000 fans from July 9 to July 15, 2020, in Split, Brac, Hvar and Vis. Tickets for the three days of Ultra Europe at Park Mladezi are already on sale, while the RESISTANCE Croatia tickets allow visitors to enjoy six days of music behind this music brand.
For the full Ultra experience, or a seven-day journey to four magical locations and ten unique party stations, you’ll want to tag along to Destination UltraEurope, and in addition to three festival days in Split, you’ll go to the Ultra Europe Opening Party, Ultra Brac, Ultra Hvar, Resistance Hvar and party Resistance Vis.
For all those coming to the eighth edition of the festival in the company of friends, group tickets are available - and, if you buy five tickets, the sixth ticket will be free.
The organizers also announced the possibility of paying in installments, and benefits also await the owners of Ultra Passport, the first international customer loyalty system for music festivals that continues to grow with more than half a million users.

December 4, 2019 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for new flights to Croatia with updates from Split, Dubrovnik, and Rijeka.
Avio Radar announced that Polish carrier Enter Air would fly for TUI from Poland to Split. Two lines are planned in the 2020 summer flight schedule, from Katowice and Warsaw to Split. Both routes will operate once a week, on Thursdays, from June 4 to September 24, 2020, with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
Recall, Ryanair Sun flew for TUI from Warsaw to Split this year. Enter Air is thus taking over this line and is introducing a new line form Katowice to Split. Both Wizz Air and Czech Smartwings already fly on both routes. In addition, the Polish carrier LOT already flies from Warsaw to Split. A total of four carriers are now competing on lines from Poland to Split with a total of 12 flights per week.
Furthermore, Avio Radar reports that Transavia France, a French subsidiary of the Dutch low-cost carrier Transavia, has announced a new flight from France to Dubrovnik in their 2020 summer flight schedule. The new Nantes-Dubrovnik route will operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from April 11 to October 24, 2020. A Boeing 737-800 aircraft will serve this line.
Transavia will be the third carrier to connect Nantes and Dubrovnik. Namely, the Spanish carrier Volotea and the British Easyjet both fly three times a week on this route. Accordingly, three airlines will offer eight flights on the Nantes-Dubrovnik line next summer.
Finally, Ex Yu Aviation News reports that Rijeka Airport handled its 200,000th passenger on November 28, 2019, marking its busiest year yet. The 200,000th traveler was on the Croatia Airlines flight from Munich to Rijeka.
With a record year behind them, Rijeka Airport has no plans to slow down next year. Namely, in 2020, Ryanair will launch a service from Hahn and LOT from Warsaw.
“This significant passenger growth was achieved thanks in part to the activities, dedication and financial assistance provided by the management of Rijeka Airport in cooperation with the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Ministry for Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, the Croatian National Tourist Board and the Kvarner County Tourism Office, which supported the introduction of new routes in 2019,” the airport said.
Dubrovnik Airport also had a record month of November when they handled 56,924 passengers for an increase of 113.9% compared to last year.

December 2, 2019 - Hippos, a concessionaire of the Split green market and fish market, have banned sellers in the outside part of the Split fish market.
Slobodna Dalmacija reports that from today, fish and seafood will no longer be sold in the outdoor area of the Split fish market, based on the decision by the State Inspectorate and the Veterinary Inspectorate.
The decision to close the outside area was made following the law that prohibits the sale of fish outdoors, i.e., permits the sale of fish only indoors.
Since the exterior of the fish market has only a prefabricated roof, this space is not legally adapted for the sale of fish. However, despite this fact, it should be noted that all fish sellers will get their place in the enclosed part of the fish market.

Thus, until further notice, the smell of fish will no longer permeate through Marmontova and the surrounding alleyways, and the famous street will be quieter without the sweet sounds of bargaining.
“There is room for everyone and no one will be neglected. All those who have been selling fish outside the fish market to date will be housed inside.

They may not have the guaranteed comfort as before, they will have to squeeze a little, but no one will be left without a place to sell.
We, as concessionaires of the Split fish market, will abide by all legal provisions, that is, all legally issued decisions,” promises Tvrtko Karoglan, director of Hippos, the concessionaire of the Split green market and fish market.

However, Karoglan points out that he will not give up on outdoor sales. That is, as the owner of the fish market, and with the City of Split and the competent conservation services, he will try to find a way to meet all legal standards to start selling fish outside again soon.
“The Split fish market is a part of the history of this city, and it will surely be unusual for many Split residents buying fish today,” says Karoglan.
Splitski Dnevnik writes that fishers are dissatisfied with this process and the Fishers’ Guild immediately held a meeting on the topic. The fishers voiced that they are concerned about what will happen to the surplus fish that cannot be sold inside due to the market's space, adding that it is necessary to review the decision on who can sell their fish at this market.
Fishers also said that there have been talks about renovating this area for several years, and that the funds have been secured from European funds, but nothing has happened.
The Split Fish Market is a stone building built around 1890. It is located on Marmontova, next to the Split spa. On the stone banks inside the fish market and in front of the fish market, fishers offer fresh fish, crustaceans, various types of shellfish, anchovies, sardines, and river fish daily.
For now, watching seagulls steal sardines from Marmontova will be a thing of the past, as is one of Split’s most famous attractions.

December 1, 2019 - Adris Group has officially become the owner of Hotel Marjan in Split!
Vecernji List reports that the process has taken years because it involved a pre-bankruptcy settlement. Split, which in the meantime has become a tourist mecca with high growth rates of tourist arrivals and overnight stays, has needed a larger, high-class hotel, and the Adris Group has made it no secret that they have serious plans for the infamous eyesore.
“We are looking forward to the new challenge. Split is a strategic destination in the development plans of the Adris Group tourist section and in this way, we will approach the execution of the Marjan project,” Adris emphasized in a statement, from which it could be learned that they would soon have the status of a top-class hotel in Split; one that will match the quality of the newly opened Grand Hotel Park in Rovinj. Adria added that they are ready to make investments as soon as the legal process is formalized.
The decision of the Commercial Court in Split, which granted the Adris Group ownership of a hotel on the West Riva, became final. Recall, the hotel was owned by Zeljko Kerum, or his company Adriatic, which ended in bankruptcy four years ago due to unpaid workers' salaries. Adris was the company's largest creditor. This summer, the bidders auctioned HRK 324 million, which is three-quarters of the appraised value of the property. However, Adris was the only bidder, so their offer was accepted.
But that's not all the breaking news about the Adris Group. The largest insurer in Croatia, Croatia osiguranje, which operates within the Adris Group, is investing HRK 100 million in a new core system, which it purchased from Sapiens. This will ensure additional sales growth and quick response of the company to market demands. They expect business efficiency to grow through the simplification and automation of part of the process. The contract includes the implementation and license services for Sapiens solutions.
“Such a significant investment in the digital future of Croatia osiguranje confirms our ambition to maintain and increase the company's competitive advantage,” said Davor Tomašković, the company's leader. It is already being implemented by the end of this year and will last until the second quarter of 2022.
