November 4, 2019 - A member of Taekwondo Club Marjan in Split Matea Jelic won the third medal for Croatia at the European Championships, this time in the category of up to 67 kilograms.
T.portal reports that Matea was free in the first round, defeating Russian Karina Zhdanov 14-8 in the second round, and Nadica Bozanic, world junior champion and Olympic junior champion 18-5 in the battle for the medal.
The semifinal of Matea’s category boasted the best of the Taekwondo world, like Nur Tatar, the owner of an incredible ten medals in the last nine years, World and European champion, and the bronze and silver medalist at the London and Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, Magda Wiet Henin with three world and European medals and two consecutive Grand Prix medals this year and Lauren Williams, two-time European Champion.
It was the British taekwondo athlete Lauren who celebrated against Matea in the semifinal 12-17, which ultimately secured Jelic the bronze medal. It is the second European medal for Jelic after Montreux in 2016. Recall, she has since been dramatically stopped three times in medal fights at world and European championships.
At the World Championships in Muju in 2017, she lost the gold point to Nur Tatar. At the European Championships in 2018, she broke a bone in her arm against Russian Polina Khan in the fight for the medal, and this year in Manchester at the World Championships, she lost at the last second to Brazil’s Titoneli.
The Croatia national team finished their appearance at the European Senior Championships with three medals - silver medals for Lovro Brecic and Toni Kanaet and a bronze for Matea Jelic. On the last day of the competition in Bari, Ivan Sapina, a bronze medalist from the World Champs this year, lost in the first round fight.

November 3, 2019 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for new flights to Croatia with updates from Split.
Avio Radar reports that Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea launched many new lines in its 2020 flight schedule, which includes something new for Split.
Namely, in a short time, Volotea has added a fourth new line in their offer to Croatia next year, which includes a trip between Italy and Split.
Thus, the Bari-Split line will circulate once a week, on Wednesdays, only in the heart of the season, i.e., from July 8 to August 26. This will be the third line from Italy to Split next year, with existing lines from Palermo and Venice. Earlier this year, the first line from Greece to Split was announced from Athens. The Boeing 717-200 aircraft is expected to run on this line.
Recall, Avio Radar reported earlier Volotea also strengthened three flights from France to Split in its 2020 summer flight schedule. Namely, flights from Lyon, Nantes, and Toulouse will fly to Split three times a week next year - on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays in the peak season. On the other hand, the Marseille-Split route, which only ran three flights a week, was reduced to two flights per week.
Furthermore, Avio Radar reports that SunClass Airlines is the new name of the Danish airline Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia. The Scandinavian branch of Thomas Cook resumed traffic after a one-day hiatus about a month ago, when its parent British airline Thomas Cook Airlines collapsed in September. The new business owner has now changed its name to SunClass Airlines and will keep Thomas Cook’s yellow heart logo.
Thus, a new line for Croatia in the 2020 summer flight schedule has been announced. Namely, the Copenhagen-Split line will operate once a week on Fridays from May 29 to September 25. SunClass Airlines will continue working on this year’s Thomas Cook routes between Gothenburg-Split, also once a week on Fridays, and between Helsinki-Split, which will also run once a week, but on Wednesdays. Tickets are on sale through the Scandinavian agencies Spies, Tjareborg, and Ving.
An Airbus type A321 aircraft was announced on all lines. Currently, the fleet consists of 8 Airbus A321 aircraft and four larger Airbus A330 aircraft.

November 2, 2019 - Croatia marked All Saints Day on November 1 by heading to the cemeteries to honor those who are no longer with us. A look at how the holiday was marked across Dalmatia.
You might have noticed that on Friday, much of Croatia came to a halt to mark All Saints Day, observed as a national holiday in the country. It is a day where people across the country flock to cemeteries to light candles, lay flowers, and pay respect to the loved ones lost.
It is a holiday where bus lines are rerouted to facilitate travel for those going to the cemetery, where taxi companies will offer discounted or free fares, and where many of the nation's largest shopping malls will close their doors.
Even a few days before the holiday, you'll notice locals heading to flower sellers lined along the streets, or to commercial supermarkets, to beat the rush and ensure they have the best bouquet to honor the dead.
As you can imagine, the images from November 1 are anything but bleak - and CroDrone captured just how colorful the holiday is across Croatia.
Check out how All Saints Day looked in Imotski, Imotski Poljice, Split, Runovici, Zagvozd, and Dugopolje in Dalmatia.

November 2, 2019 - TK Marjan's Lovre Brecic won the taekwondo silver medal at the European Senior Championships in Bari, Italy!
Sportnet.hr reports that Brecic was free in the first round of the 63 kg category, and in the second, he celebrated against Ukrainian Oleksandra Dziuba 18:8. In the fight for a medal, Brecic topped Russian Bolat Izutdinov 28:16.
Brecic routinely made it through the semi-final fight against Hungarian Levente Josz 30:12 and went on to reach the final where he awaited world champion and two-time European champion Jaouad Achab, whose victory against Brecic gave him his third European championship title.
This is Brecic’s second consecutive medal at the European Championships. Recall, last year in Kazan, he was the European Champion in the same category. With this silver medal, Brecic also won 24 points in the fight for the direct placement in the Tokyo Olympics next year, and the outcome will be known after the final Grand Prix in Moscow in early December.
With Brecic’s medal, Marjan Taekwondo Club has achieved a success that perhaps no other club in the world can boast. In the same year, its members won medals at five major competitions in four different age categories. Namely, Bruna Vuletic is bronze medalist at the World Senior Championships, Lovre Brecic is the silver medalist at the European Senior Championships, Klara Kovac, Lucija Domic and Paula Antunovic won the silver and two bronze medals at the European Junior Championships, Bruna Duvancic won the silver medal at the European Junior Championships, while Rea Kozlica and Emanuel Berisha took the silver at the European Cadet Championships. Eight medals in the same year, and over the next two days, Toni Kanaet, Nikita Glasnovic, Matea Jelic and Leon Glasnovic hope for medals and points for Tokyo.
Three more Croats performed on the first day of the European Championships. Namely, in the under 49kg category, Kristina Tomic, the current bronze medalist in the World Championships, lost in the battle for the medal to Germany's Ele Aydin, Ana Taslak was stopped in the first round by Olympic silver medalist Tijana Bogdanovic, and Josip Teskera lost to Belarusian Yauheni Anushkevich.
Taekwondo was not included in the European Games this year, and this extra European Championship allows the athletes to make up for the points that other athletes around the world had the opportunity to earn at their continental games. The competition is held in five men's and five women's categories (4 men's and 4 women's Olympic plus one added category - men's 63 kg and women's 53 kg).

November 1, 2019 - The Old Town Hall in Split, located within the bustling Pjaca, will shine once again.
Slobodna Dalmacija writes that the City of Split has announced a competition for the archaeological research, renovation and interior decoration of the historic building in People's Square, or what Split locals know better as 'Pjaca'.
These activities are an integral part of the EU project "Palace of Life, City of Change", financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the ITU mechanism of the Urban Agglomeration of Split, and the value of this part of the project is estimated at 7.2 million kuna.
The Neo-Gothic Old Town Hall building will retain its current size, layout, and height. Renovations will be carried out on the floors, all floor structures, and the roof.
Architect of the project, Josip Ružić, said that by removing the existing walls and modifying the inter-story structures, the intention is to achieve an open and flexible exhibition space on all three floors. This will allow the heritage facility to be used for new functions and to hold seminars, lectures, concerts, receptions, and the like.
The Old Town Hall could also serve as a place where the mayor would occasionally receive high-ranking guests, and suitable furniture for the first floor will be specially brought in for the occasion. The dropped ceiling will be removed and a wooden cassette ceiling installed, with thermal insulation required. The base of the pillars in the loggia that were cut off during the earlier interventions will be reconstructed and add the missing part of the stone base.
The existing wooden windows and doors will be replaced with new ones, but in the same style. Anti-theft foil is envisaged on the windows, with additional thermal insulation and sun protection.
On the ground floor, the reception area, souvenir shop, control room, and toilets will be located along the existing loggia and the exhibition area, and all the facilities mentioned above will occupy a quarter of the space, while the rest will be used for exhibiting. An 18th-century illustrated monograph of Diocletian's Palace, authored by Scottish architect Robert Adam, will be displayed on the touch screen.
The north side of Old Town Hall will provide access for people with disabilities, up to the ground floor level by a ramp, and access to the second floor by elevator. A stone staircase with a wrought iron fence will be retained. On the first and second floors, there will be showrooms, and the attic is intended for mechanical installations, storage, and office space.
The interior design project is signed by Nikolina Jelavić Mitrović, a leading author in the area, who designed and executed 12 permanent exhibitions of museums in Croatia and more than 130 exhibitions in our leading museums and galleries. For the Vukovar City Museum housed in the Eltz Castle and the Museum Alka of Sinj, she received prestigious European awards.
The designer notes that, given the importance of the building, it was approached with the utmost care and that all possible installation equipment would be kept as hidden or as noticeable as possible.
“In addition to the installation of a modern ventilation system, a microclimate control system is envisaged, which will allow the exposure of the most sensitive and valuable exhibits. The space on the first and second floors will have microclimate control when needed, so that the most sensitive exhibits can be exposed,” says Jelavić Mitrović, adding that there will be automatic glass doors on the floors that provide stable microclimate conditions.
Unlike the existing lighting, the new lighting will be flexible, able to move around, and allow for better adjustment of light intensity depending on the purpose. There will be built-in speakers on the ceilings.
The project envisages a system of dismantling panels that will allow the window openings to be covered, thus providing more exhibition space.
“No use of the walls is envisioned, but the exhibitions will be shown exclusively on the billboards. The character of the space is a bit darker as the walls will not be white, and the usual exhibit white color will be secured by the use of disassembly panels. The panels will be able to change color depending on the exhibition,” notes the designer, pointing out that the panels will be able to be placed freely in the space, but also against the wall using a special suspension system to create a continuous exhibition surface.
The coat of arms on a glass wall in the center window is planned on the first floor, which was created when the town hall was Neo-Gothic. The coats of arms will be made of colored glass, and not painted on glass as it is now.
However, archaeological research on the Old Town Hall comes first.
“A small part of Pjaca has been explored. In Split, you never know what you can discover when you start to open something; it may be something ingenious and completely alter our project... If any graves and artifacts are found, it will be taken to a museum. Who knows, it might be good to find something crazy,” Nikolina Jelavic Mitrovic joked.

A glimmer of hope for Hajduk was brought by Stanko Juric in the 88th minute for 2:1, though Hajduk was unable to score again.
There were no surprises in the match between Dinamo and Opatija, so much so that Dinamo secured the victory in the first half when all three goals of the match were scored.
The Croatian champion led with a goal by Damian Kadzior in the eighth minute. Mario Gavranovic's penalty in the 29th minute increased Dinamo’s lead to 2:0, while another goal by Gavranovic the 36th minute made it 3:0.

October 31, 2019 - Jadran Split, Jug Dubrovnik, and Mladost Zagreb all appeared in the third round of the LEN Champions League this week.
Jadran Split suffered their second defeat in the Champions League on Tuesday. In the third round of Group A, Jadran lost in Kazan to Sintez 16:11 (4:3, 4:4, 5:2, 3:2).
The Russian side scored two goals in the first two minutes to lead 2:0. Jadran quickly responded, and Rino Buric scored twice to equalize 2:2. Jadran’s first and only lead of the match came in the 11th minute when Zovic scored for 6:5.
Sintez answered with three consecutive goals, but before the end of the second quarter, Delic reduced their lead to 8:7. The third quarter was crucial, in which Sintez scored five goals for 13:9. The game ended 16:11.
Jug AO played right after Jadran on Tuesday and defeated German club Spandau 04 12:7 (2:4, 2:2, 3:0, 5:1) in the third round of Champions League, thus topping Group A.
Jug did not enter the game well, with Spandau 04 leading 4:2 after the first quarter - and they even maintained their two-goal lead after halftime (6:4). Jug, however, showed their worth in the second half.
The third quarter saw a turnaround, and with goals by Loren Fatovic, Luka Lozina, and Filip Krzic, the Dubrovnik side reached their first lead of the game (7:6). After three and a half minutes in the last quarter, they increased their lead to 10:6, and their victory was all but confirmed. Jug went on to win 12:7.
Loren Fatovic was great for Jug with six goals, while Lozina and Alexandros Papanastasiou added two.
In the fourth round on November 8, Jadran and Jug will meet in Split.
In the 3rd round of Group B on Wednesday, Mladost played 11:11 against the mighty Pro Recco, led by former Croatia national team coach Ratko Rudic, and managed the draw in the last second of the match.
Mladen deservedly scored a point against the most expensive team in the world to record 24 wins in their last 24 Champions League games.
Mladost led 2:1 after the first quarter, at halftime, they were up 6:5, and in the middle of the third quarter, they were up by two (7:5). However, Pro Recco led 8:7 by the end of the third quarter, then 10:9 and 11:10 in the last leg. The Italian side scored for 11:10 with three seconds to go, and it seemed that would be the end. However, Mladost managed to equalize in the time remaining, and the hero of the match became Cosmin Radu, who scored for 11:11.
The best player for Mladost was Luka Bukic, who scored three goals and Milos Cuk, who scored two goals, while Ivan Marcelic had eight saves. For Pro Recco, Filip Filipovic, Francesco di Fulvio, Dusan Mandic were the most efficient with two goals.
It was a collision of the teams that together have the most European Championship titles - Pro Recco 8, Mladost 7. Pro Recco, however, has been waiting for the European title since 2015, while Mladost hasn’t been the best in Europe since 1996.
Mladost currently sits in 4th place of Group B and will visit the Spanish team Terrassa on November 9.
