May 29, 2022 - While it may sound silly not to take advantage of the summer to enjoy the Adriatic Sea to the fullest, this time of year is ideal for visiting other destinations beyond the coast. In case you are far from the sea and need to take a dip, here are some freshwater destinations in Croatia to cool off!

Summer in Croatia is synonymous with turquoise waters, paradise islands, and sailboats. For many, if your vacation does not include any of these, then you are not enjoying the country as you should. I do not agree. Although visiting the Adriatic is essential, summer brings with it a wide variety of opportunities throughout the entire geography of Croatia. The parks and fields are filled with green and shade, perfect for hiding from the sun. Also, the number of events and festivities multiply considerably in central and eastern Croatia. Why would you miss any of this?

If you can, including central and eastern Croatia in your travel itinerary is a great idea. Zagreb and Osijek airports will also increase their routes and flights throughout, and after getting to know both cities and their surroundings, you can head to see what makes Croatia so famous: its coast and islands. But don't worry, we know that these regions of the country are no strangers to high temperatures, and you will surely want to take a dip before waiting to travel to the coast. If freshwater is also your thing, here are some non-beach destinations in Croatia where you can cool off.

Jarun lake, Zagreb

When temperatures rise to an unbearable point at this time of year, Lake Jarun becomes a haven of shade and fresh water for the inhabitants of the Croatian capital. Jarun Lake is a 2 km artificial body of water, surrounded by cycling paths, promenades, forests, and parks. It was built and opened in 1987 for the Universiade - World University Games. The lake is ideal not only for bathers, but for all those who practice activities such as rowing, kayaking, or paddling.

Drava river, Osijek

The Drava, the main river in Osijek, gives the city not only a beautiful appeal but also offers its inhabitants an ideal alternative when summer arrives and the Adriatic is so far away. One would think that it is the custom of only a few, but the banks of the Drava are filled with hundreds of people looking for a good dip even on weekdays. In addition to lying down to sunbathe, family and friends gather to play on the shores and have a picnic.

Foginovo kupalište, Karlovac

Foginovo kupalište is a river bathing area in the city of Karlovac, where its inhabitants cool off in the waters of the Korana river. From its source in Plitvice, the Korana river reaches Karlovac, offering for centuries an oasis of peace, nature, and freshwater to locals and visitors. Bathers enjoy not only fairly clean waters but can also do so in peace thanks to the lifeguards always nearby. It is definitely an ideal destination for everyone, as adults can sunbathe on the shores, while the younger ones enjoy the inflatables and the diving tower.

Cetina river

The Cetina river is one of the largest and most important rivers in southern Croatia, rising from the Cetina spring to the east in Šibenik-Knin County, running through almost all of Dalmatia, and reaching the Adriatic Sea at Omiš. There are those who find the Cetina spring itself an ideal spot for a summer dip, but the entire river has numerous points to cool off. If you are in Omiš, encourage yourself to participate in activities such as kayaking, canoeing, or rafting, as many of the organizers include moments during the tours to take a good bath in freshwater after a good exercise.

Modro jezero, Imotski

In Imotski, just an hour from Split by car, you will find not only a historic and quite picturesque town but also a group of lakes that are well-known in the country. One, in particular, Modro jezero, is an ideal bathing spot where high temperatures can easily be reached in these months of the year. Of all the alternatives mentioned above, Modro Jezero must be one of the most spectacular in terms of its location and scenery.

ZAGREB, 29 May 2022 - Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević has given an interview for Hina on the occasion of his one year in office, talking about what has been done and future projects.

Asked about his biggest success, he mentioned the new model of running the city in every aspect, from public procurement to hiring in dozens of city companies and over 300 institutions, saying that people are no longer appointed based on party affiliation but their qualifications.

Another success is the financial stabilisation of the city, Tomašević said, adding that the budget deficit is the lowest in the last five years at HRK 30 million, which he said was almost negligible considering that the budget was almost HRK 14 billion.

The mayor noted that the city now has 16 instead of 27 departments.

He also mentioned big changes in waste management, including the construction of a composting plant

As for failures, Tomašević said that although it was the legal responsibility of the state, he was very unhappy with the reconstruction of private buildings after the 2020 earthquake.

Asked which changes the people of Zagreb had felt over the past year, he said everything the new administration was doing was the basis for changes they would feel much more by the end of the term.

Speaking of future projects, Tomašević mentioned the procurement of 20 new trams and 65 buses, the construction of at least 12 kindergartens in the next two years, more bike paths and pedestrian zones.

He said the unused Paromlin industrial facility in the city centre would become a multifunctional social-cultural-educational centre financed mainly with EU funds.

Other unused properties such as Zagrepčanka, Gredelj, and Badel Block, which have been the city's "dead capital" for decades, will be revitalised to build affordable housing as well as put to social and commercial use, he added.

The city's housing fund policy is to build new flats for rent to socially vulnerable groups and young families at affordable prices, the mayor said. Our population policy is to invest in kindergartens so that they are affordable to everyone as well as affordable housing, he added.

Asked if the decision to abolish the state-at-home-parent scheme had been hasty, given that a court put it on hold, Tomašević said the scheme did not have a demographic effect and that, according to polls, most citizens considered it unjust.

Spending 15 times more on that scheme than on building kindergartens cannot be the city's development policy, he added.

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has modified its flight schedule for June. Next month, the well-known airline will offer almost 80 scheduled flights to and from six Croatian airports, reports Croatian Aviation. 

Ryanair plans to operate 79 international routes to 6 Croatian airports in June to Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, and Zagreb, with based aircraft and crew in Zagreb and Zadar.

Zadar Airport is definitely the number one airport in Croatia for Ryanair. Aircraft will fly to more than 45 destinations and will offer over 160,000 seats in more than 450 rotations. Certain lines were already scheduled to be in operation, but the carrier postponed the start of operations on several lines for commercial reasons until the second half of June.

From Split to:
Dublin, four times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Dublin is the only Ryanair destination from Split. 17 rotations are planned for June, with Ryanair offering more than 6,000 seats.

From Dubrovnik to:
Vienna, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays,

Dublin, four times a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays (34),

On the two mentioned lines, Ryanair will offer almost 10,000 seats to and from Dubrovnik Airport in June.

In June, Ryanair will operate a total of 79 international routes to and from Croatian airports, and according to current data, the number of routes should increase in July. In June alone, the Irish airline will offer more than 285,000 seats to and from Croatian airports, with Zadar Airport and Zagreb International Airport having the largest share in the number of seats (and consequently the line).

May 28, 2022 - Zagreb City Day will be celebrated once again on May 31, and there is plenty to look forward to, with a rich and varied programme for all the family.

There are few nicer times to visit the Croatian capital than late May. As I write these early morning words, to the sound of birdsong and with rays of sun through the window, the day ahead has a couple of meetings across town. I will stroll through various streets and parks to get there in pleasant temperatures, enjoying the relaxed pace of a capital city which has yet to be fully discovered. 

One thing I have come to appreciate after a year living in the city is that there is always something going on here, and the use of the city's unlimited outside space for venues and events has become almost a trademark of Zagreb. To get a flavour of the outdoor fun that awaits this summer, for example, check out the TCN overview of Summer in Zagreb. 

But there is no need to wait for summer to enjoy a good time in the city, for this Tuesday,  May 31 will see plenty of activity in the city's streets, parks and Upper Town with the annual celebration of Zagreb City Day, an occasion when Zagreb celebrates its rich heritage and culture through a series of exhibitions, concerts, free tours and other events. 

Although the settlement that is today's Zagreb was first mentioned in 1094 (apart from archaeological evidence of human inhabitation from the Stone Age and Illyrians), the date of May 31 has its origins in a natural disaster in more recent times.  

On May 30, 1731, a devastating fire broke out across the city, which at that time was mostly constructed from wood, with much of Gradac (the area around today's Upper Town) badly damaged, including the Stone Gate. But while everything around it perished, one little painting was found intact and untouched the following day among the ashes - a painting of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. A miracle was proclaimed. 

It is not known who the artist of the magical painting was, but it can be viewed today at Stone Gate, which is today considered to be a holy site. 

The story did not end there, as Archbishop Franjo Kuharic proclaimed Our Lady of the Stone Gate to be the patron saint of Zagreb on May 31, 1991, a feast which is celebrated on the same day, Zagreb City Day. 

A celebration of Zagreb's patron saint will take place on Zagreb City Day. It will begin with the celebration of the Eucharist in front of the Zagreb Cathedral at 7 p.m., led by Msgr. Lazarus You Heung-sik, head of the Clergy Congregation, together with Cardinal Josip Bozanić and other bishops, and priests and monks of the City of Zagreb. After the Mass, there will be a procession with candles and the image of the Mother of God of the Stone Gate from the Cathedral, Bakaceva Street, the north side of the Ban Josip Jelacic Square, Radiceva Street to the Stone Gate where the entire program will end.

But Zagreb City Day is about much more than just celebrating the city's patron saint, as Zagreb Tourist Board CEO, Martina Bienenfeld explains:

“We celebrate the Zagreb City Day with various free programs, and this year it will also be symbolically celebrated in Sarajevo, as part of the Ja BIH festival where an exhibition of our famous travel writer and photographer, Davor Rostuhar, dedicated to Zagreb for its birthday, will be held. Traditionally, our green and sustainable Hanging Gardens are a kind of overture, which we place in mid-May on the lamps of the Upper and Lower Town. In addition, we are happy to share the news that the flights of the Israeli company Sun d'Or, a branch of the national airline El Al, will start arriving in Zagreb on 31 May, which will connect our city directly with Tel Aviv every Tuesday. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Statehood Day on 30 May, as well as happy Zagreb City Day on 31 May.”

And so to the free events and tours - what is happening? Quite a lot!

I am finding Zagreb to be a really interesting city to explore, helped in part by some innovative tour itineraries. There are three free tours on Zagreb City Day, an educational city tour for children (14:00), a costumed city tour "From the Pen of Zagorka" (18:30), and a costumed city tour "Zagreb's Enchanted Story" (19:30). Looking to delve into the city's rich historical past? Take a tour with the Zagreb Time Machine on Zagreb City Day. Key locations in the Upper Town will come to life from 10:00, as the old town songs of street musicians will reverberate in Upper Town Musical Sights, before the Honorary Company of the Kravat Regiment will perform the changing of the guard at 11:30 starting by the Ethnographic Museum. And then in the early evening, from 17:00 - 20:00, the Upper Town in the past will be on display.  

No celebration would be complete without live music, and the Music Pavilion in Zrinjevac Park is the place to be at 17:30 to dance a little and take in the tunes of the 10-member Swingers Band. There is something for everyone, with a repertoire of American musical legends that connects them with traditional evergreens and songs dedicated to the city of Zagreb. The performance is free for all generations and includes famous titles such as: La Bamba, Footloose, Suspicious Minds, Tequila, Let's Twist Again, Fly me to the Moon, Golubovi, Autobus Calypso, Samo jednom se ljubi, Sretan rođendan, Duda, Dudica, Volare, Stand by me, Hit the Road Jack, Marina, Americano, Can't Help Falling in Love.

There are several plays and fun workshops for the little ones, with a programme in the morning from 09:30 on the small stage of the Maksimir Public Institution, followed by another in King Petar Kresimir IV Park from 17:30. The Maksimir Public Institution will also be hosting various exhibitions all day, including a photography exhibition, award-winning works of visitors, and an exhibition of employees of Maksimir Public Institution. Later, from 17:00, host and quizmaster Marina Orsag will be hosting the Green pub quiz and show. 

There will be one more green addition to this city of parks and outdoor spaces, with the return of the Hanging Baskets project, where around 250 greenery baskets are places on the street lamps of the Lower and Upper Towns, one ore image of Zagreb as a green and sustainable destination.

May 26, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as the Qatar Airways Zagreb route is boosted for the 2022 World Cup later this year. 

Qatar Airways, a member of the One World Alliance, has made changes to the type of aircraft on more than 80 international routes in the last two days, including the route to Zagreb. These are operational changes have been made due to the World Cup, which expects great demand for flights to this country, reports Croatian Aviation.

Due to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Qatar Airways is increasing the number of flights to Zagreb and will also use wide-body aircraft on the route.

Namely, from November 17 to December 20 this year, Qatar Airways will operate daily between Zagreb and Doha, with evening departures from Zagreb. Furthermore, instead of the narrow-body aircraft type A320, the wide-body aircraft type Boeing 787-8 will operate on the route.

The World Cup will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18 this year, and the national airline is preparing for high demand for its flights. Thus, as mentioned earlier, only in the past two days has the airline made operational changes on more than 80 international lines

Between Doha and Zagreb, the B787-8 will operate a total of 34 return flights, offering Qatar Airways a total of 17,136 seats, of which almost 1,500 seats are available in business class.

Qatar Airways B787-8 aircraft in the business class have a 1-2-1 configuration, while in economy class in the classic 3-3-3 configuration. Recall that before the pandemic in the summer of 2019, Qatar Airways operated twice a day between Zagreb and Doha, and the wide-bodied B787-8 was supposed to arrive in Zagreb in the 2020 summer flight schedule, but that did not happen due to the pandemic. 

The Croatia national team will play this November at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in Group F against Morocco, Canada, and Belgium. Croatia will open the tournament against Morocco on November 23 at 11 am local time at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. The second round is scheduled four days later, on November 27, when Croatia plays Canada at 5 pm at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. The Group F derby is played on December 1, when Croatia and Belgium will play at 4 pm at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.

If Croatia is one of the first two national teams in their group, they will cross paths with Group E, where Spain and Germany are the favorites to pass, while the group also includes Japan and either Costa Rica or New Zealand.

May 25, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Air Serbia flights to Croatia have been significantly boosted from Belgrade this summer. 

Serbian national airline Air Serbia will launch two seasonal routes to Split and Dubrovnik by the end of May, and flights from Belgrade to Pula, Rijeka, and Zadar by mid-June, reports Croatian Aviation.

Namely, Air Serbia plans to operate to six Croatian airports this summer, with only the route to Zagreb being year-round.

Already this Thursday, May 26, two lines will start operating from Belgrade to Split and Dubrovnik. These are also the two most popular of Air Serbia lines to and from Croatia.

The line between Belgrade and Split will operate from May 26, twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, and the number of weekly operations will gradually increase. Namely, first on June 6, an additional flight will be introduced on Mondays, and then on June 24 with a flight on Fridays, which will allow Air Serbia to operate between the two cities four times a week, using ATR72, A319, and A320 aircraft.

The line between Dubrovnik and Belgrade will start operating on the same day. Currently, two flights a week have been announced, also on Thursdays and Sundays, with an additional flight available on Mondays from June 13. ATR72 and A319 aircraft have also been announced on this route.

From mid-June, there will be lines from Belgrade to Pula, Rijeka, and Zadar, and everything will start around the same period. Namely, the line between Belgrade and Zadar will start with traffic from June 14 with two flights a week, a day later (June 15), the line between Belgrade and Rijeka will begin, and from June 16, flights between Belgrade and Pula will launch. 

All three mentioned lines have announced two flights a week in June with ATR72 aircraft. The line to Zadar will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays, to Rijeka on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and to Pula on Thursdays and Sundays.

The only year-round Air Serbia route between Belgrade and Zagreb will also have more flights in June than the current schedule. Namely, on Mondays and Fridays, the airline will offer two flights a day between the two cities, while one daily flight is available on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

In June, Air Serbia will operate on 6 mentioned routes to Croatia with a total of 20 weekly flights, which is a significant increase, especially compared to the same period last year and the year before. The number of flights will continue to grow in the peak summer season.

May 20, 2022 - From May 26 to June 12, the Zagreb Food Truck Festival, a city favorite and the first Croatian street food festival on wheels will be held on Jarun Lake to attract more than 20,000 visitors for the third year in a row.

The Zagreb Food Truck Festival announces its largest edition this year at Jarun, where over 20,000 visitors are expected from May 26 to June 12. With a rich offer of good snacks and an even better music and entertainment program, the Zagreb Food Truck Festival very quickly became one of the favorite street festivals for the people of Zagreb. Located on the Jarun coast in a green oasis near the Aquarius, it was a favorite summer place for many to walk and socialize in the shade with a glass of beer and street food.

So from Thursday, May 26, until June 12, visitors will once again be able to enjoy one of the favorite summer festivals. The new Zagreb Food Truck Festival will be open to all visitors on Thursday, May 26 at 4 pm with a traditional Open Air Cinema projection from 8 pm. For 18 days, this location will be the most fun place to go out after work and all-day weekend socializing in a relaxed atmosphere with delicious snacks or an evening out with concerts, scents, and flavors of summer.

Free concerts of local performers are waiting for everyone, starting at 8 pm:

The gastronomic part will include street food and desserts. The offer includes burgers, BBQ, fish specialties, ethnic delicacies and sandwiches, fritters, and craft ice cream, but also drinks such as craft beer, gin, cocktails, aperol spritz, coffee, and juices. Among the food trucks that will be present at the festival is "Picnic" from Zadar, which will present its offer in "Podravka Food Court" for the first time, as well as the Zagreb street food institution "El Toro" with its multi-award-winning Blackie burger, the Slavonian "Time Out", American specialties such as fries and nachos by Vegeta Grill Marinada BBQ from the "Loaded" truck and fantastic fish snacks in the form of sushi, fish tacos at the "Cromaris food corner", all will be ready for you.

On Thursday, June 9, a unique festival guest will make an appearance at Varaždin's "Reshetka powered by Đurina hiža" food truck, which will premiere its two new burgers for the Zagreb audience. Zagreb Food Truck Festival

For our little ones, there are numerous children's workshops on weekends, an outdoor library, a fashion flea market, a small plot to buy seasonal local products, taking photos on a unique retro vehicle, a photo bus, and many other fun activities.

All events and concerts at the Food Truck Festival are free for visitors, and the festival is open to visitors during the working week from 4 pm to 12 am, while on weekends from 11 am to 2 am.

May 20, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as two Aegean Airlines Zagreb flights will run weekly from Athens from June 15!

Greek national airline Aegean Airlines will operate on a regular seasonal route between Athens and Zagreb from mid-June, reports Croatian Aviation.

Namely, the Star Alliance alliance member is renewing the line between Athens and Zagreb as of June 15. Two flights a week have been announced, every Wednesday and Saturday, and A320 aircraft will operate on the route.

Recall, Aegean introduced a regular line between the two cities in May 2018 with three flights a week in traffic, but with a smaller capacity aircraft type DashQ400. The line operated until the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and then the airline announced its return to the Croatian capital in the previous two summer seasons, though never fulfilled its promise. 

Given that there has been a significant increase in market demand, especially compared to the previous two seasons, the Greek airline will still operate on this route this summer, twice a week, and the first flight was announced in less than a month.

In 34 rotations, from mid-June to early October, Aegean Airlines offers a total of 12,036 seats between Zagreb and Athens, and A320 and A320NEO aircraft have been announced on the route, with 174 and 180 seats in the carrier's fleet, respectively.

Zagreb and Athens will also be connected by the regular Croatia Airlines line, which will operate from June 2 until the end of the summer flight schedule, i.e., the end of October. It is a long-term seasonal line between two cities with a stop at Dubrovnik Airport, and DashQ400 aircraft with a capacity of 76 seats operate on the line. 

Croatia Airlines will operate a total of 63 rotations on this route in the summer season, offering 10,448 seats, three flights a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

A total of 22,484 seats between these two carriers will be available between Athens and Zagreb this summer, both of which are members of the same aviation association.

ZAGREB, 19 May 2022 - The 56th edition of the Floraart flower show was formally opened by Mayor Tomislav Tomašević at Zagreb's Bundek Lake on Thursday.

This year, there are 160 exhibitors with over 100,000 plants.

Mayor Tomašević particularly thanked guests from the Republic of Korea and Korean Ambassador Sung-Wook Hong, for attending the opening ceremony.

Also in attendance was Agriculture Minister Marija Vučković,  who hailed cooperation with Korea.

The minister said that local flower growers, particularly young entrepreneurs in this sector, had been supported under various schemes totalling HRK 15 million (€2 million).

May 13, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Croatia Airlines Zurich flights and Turkish Airlines Croatia flights are announced from next month.

Croatia Airlines and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board presented in Zurich to Swiss business (B2B) journalists and travel agents. The presentation was also attended by Andrea Bekić, Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Switzerland and Slobodan Mikac, Consul General of the Republic of Croatia in Switzerland, reports Croatian Aviation.

This year's Croatia Airlines summer flight schedule was presented with an emphasis on direct international flights from Dubrovnik to Zurich, which are planned from June 1, 2022, four times a week - Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Return tickets are available to passengers on this route for as little as 143 euros.

On the same day, regular flights from Zurich to Split will run four times a week - on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. In addition, daily flights between Zurich and Zagreb are available to passengers from Switzerland.

Dubrovnik is a distinct air destination and the development of air transport is very important for the tourist facilities of the city and Dubrovnik-Neretva County, which offer domestic and foreign tourists a wealth of natural, historical, cultural and many other beauties and features.

This season, Croatia Airlines will connect Croatia with 21 international destinations, i.e., 22 European airports, flying on 41 international routes. In that period, more than 16,000 flights and about 1,766,000 seats will be offered.

Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that Turkish Airlines announced its flight schedule for June. It plans to increase the number of weekly rotations to Croatia, which includes flights between Istanbul, Zagreb and Dubrovnik.

Flights between Istanbul and Zagreb will continue to operate 14 times a week and 2 times a day, respectively, with morning and evening departures from Zagreb Airport, but a larger number of flights has been announced to Dubrovnik Airport.

Namely, as of Monday, June 13, Turkish Airlines plans to operate daily between Istanbul and Dubrovnik, which will increase the number of weekly flights to and from Croatia to 21.

Narrow-body A320 and A321 aircraft have been announced to Zagreb and Dubrovnik.
