Finnair Croatia Routes from Helsinki Boosted from June 20

June 10, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Finnair Croatia routes have been boosted to Split and Dubrovnik from June 20.

Finnish airline and Oneworld alliance member Finnair will increase the number of flights to two Croatian airports in the second half of June, reports Croatian Aviation

Namely, Finnair will increase the number of flights to Split and Dubrovnik from June 20, while the number of weekly flights between Helsinki and Zagreb will remain the same as before.

The Finnish national airline will operate 24 return flights between Helsinki and Zagreb until the end of July this year. The line was introduced on May 1 this year, and operations continue three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Instead of aircraft from the A320 family, the airline will mainly use smaller capacity aircraft, type E190 (100 seats) between the two cities, while A319 aircraft have also been announced on certain dates.

By the end of July, Finnair will offer a total of 5,480 seats between Helsinki and Zagreb.

As for Split Airport, three flights a week are announced until June 19, on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and from June 20, a fourth flight a week is available, every Friday. The stated number of weekly operations is planned through the peak summer season. Unlike the route to Zagreb, Finnair to Split is announcing A321 and A320 aircraft (209 and 174 seats).

Between Split and Helsinki, Finnair will offer 11,840 seats by the end of July.

The situation is similar in Dubrovnik. Until June 19, three flights a week are also announced, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and from the next day, a flight is also available on Thursdays. A320 and A321 aircraft have been announced between the two cities, but A321 aircraft will be more frequent in Resnik than in Čilipi.

Between Dubrovnik and Helsinki, the Finnish airline is offering 11,655 seats until July 31.

Finnair counted on a larger number of transfer passengers from Asia, but due to the war in Ukraine and the closure of Russian airspace, routes to Asia have either been significantly reduced or suspended, so most passengers are on lines to or from Croatia point-to-point.

More Ryanair Zagreb Flight Cancellations Announced in July

June 9, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as more Ryanair Zagreb flight cancellations have been announced in July, totaling to 56 return flights on 15 international routes.

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has canceled several scheduled flights from Zagreb in July, while flights for May and June were canceled earlier, reports Croatian Aviation.

Namely, Ryanair has canceled the following flights from its Zagreb base:

Brussels Charleroi, 2 times a week (instead of 5) until 18 July,

Sofia, all flights are canceled until July 19,

Paphos, once a week (instead of 3), until July 18,

Dusseldorf Weeze, 2 times a week (instead of 3) until July 19,

Frankfurt Hahn, 2 times a week (instead of 3), until July 18,

Karlsruhe, once a week (instead of 3), until July 19,

Memmingen, 2 times a week (instead of 3) until July 18,

Brindisi, all flights are canceled until July 20,

Milan Bergamo, 4 times a week (instead of 5) until July 19,

Malta, 2 times a week (instead of 3), until July 19,

Oslo Torp, once a week (instead of 2), until July 20,

Malaga, once a week (instead of 2), until July 20,

Gothenburg, 2 times a week (instead of 3), until July 18,

Malmö, 2 times a week (instead of 3), until July 19,

Basel, all flights are canceled until July 18.

From the beginning to the middle of July, Ryanair canceled 56 return flights on the 15 mentioned international routes, which reduced the number of available seats by 20,160.

The Irish airline traditionally does not go public with the reasons for cancellations, but given the many problems for airports and airlines recently, it is obvious that this airline also has operational problems that lead to flight cancellations.

Given that more flights were canceled in May and June, and even in the first half of July, which is the peak season, it is expected that in the next few weeks the Irish airline will reduce the flight schedule for the second half of July. Passengers who had tickets on canceled Ryanair flights received an apology email and were offered several options, such as a refund or a change in travel date.

Croatian Aviation concludes that one thing is for sure - the frequent Ryanair cancellations in Zagreb will certainly not positively affect the company's reputation among passengers.

Festival of Equal Opportunities Opens

ZAGREB, 7 June 2022 - Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević on Tuesday opened the Festival of Equal Opportunities, an international event in which persons with disabilities perform in a musical, theatre and art programme together with artists as well as in recreation and sport games.

The festival celebrates diversity and equal opportunities, which must be ensured for all persons with disabilities in Zagreb, he said, adding that all barriers to feeling equal must be removed.

The festival is taking place in Zagreb's central square until 9 June and has been organised by the Zagreb Association of Physically Disabled for the 20th year in a row. It features more than 900 performers from Croatia and abroad, including 600 persons with disabilities.

Persons with disabilities make up 13% of Croatia's population and due to countless physical, institutional and social barriers, they are excluded from everyday life and condemned to invisibility, which is a reflection of structural discrimination, so the public does not perceive it as a problem, said Viktorija Lisec, the Association's president.

The prime minister's envoy, Culture Ministry state secretary Ivica Poljičak, said the government was doing everything to make everyday life easier for persons with disabilities. Their participation in cultural events stimulates their creativity and contributes to society's diversity and to raising public awareness, he added.

Science and Education Ministry state secretary Tomislav Paljak said the festival was special because it enabled persons with disabilities to show the talents that equated them with others.

The deputy ombudsman for person with disabilities, Dario Jurišić, said they should have equal rights and obligations, and that the festival's purpose was a social approach to the inclusion of isolated groups.

LOT Croatia Expansion on the Horizon Due to Increasing Interest from Polish Tourists

June 5, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as a LOT Croatia expansion is on the horizon due to an increasing number of Polish tourists booking a Croatian holiday.

Ex Yu Aviation reports that Polish airline LOT will expand its presence in Croatia beyond the eight routes between Poland and Croatia this summer. LOT currently serves five cities in Croatia with 170,000 seats on sale between Poland and Croatia this season alone. Namely, from Warsaw to Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, and Rijeka, from Krakow to Split, from Rzeszow to Zadar and from Zielona Gora to Rijeka. The Polish airline's main competitors between Poland and Croatia are Wizz Air and Ryanair.

“This summer we will fly 28 times per week between Poland and Croatia. Most Polish nationals come to Croatia by car. However, I hope that we will jointly develop solutions so that we can save our compatriots a car trip and that everyone can fly with LOT. Last year, we transported over 33,000 Poles to Croatia, and we hope for a much better result this year. I also hope that Croats will visit Poland in greater numbers," said the carrier’s CEO, Rafał Milczarski.

"Croatia is becoming more and more popular among our passengers each year and is becoming of interest for travelers outside of Warsaw as well. As we continue to increase our offer, both Zagreb and Croatia as a whole are becoming popular for short weekend breaks as well," he added.

“Our performance in Croatia is the result of consistent work by our team as well as the growing popularity of Croatia in Poland and the increasing number of Poles who want to come to Croatia within two hours," said LOT Board Member for Commercial Affairs, Michal Fijoł.

Ex Yu Aviation adds that Zagreb Airport has seen a growing demand from secondary cities in Poland. Before the pandemic, Zagreb saw a lot of traffic from Poland’s second-largest city Krakow, with over 5,000 people traveling between the two cities in 2019 that year on a single itinerary. The cities of Gdansk, Wroclaw, Poznan and Katowice followed.

LOT has bases in Krakow and Katowice, meaning Zagreb could be served with Embraer E170, E175, and the Dash 8 turboprop which can seat 70-80 passengers.

Ryanair Zagreb Flight Reductions Extended into Mid-July

June 3, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Ryanair Zagreb flight reductions continue into the middle of next month.

Several Ryanair Zagreb destinations will see further reductions and temporary route suspensions into mid-July, reports Ex Yu Aviation

Passengers already witnessed reductions in May, and while the airline was to conclude the network cutbacks in June, it is now extending the suspension of some of its Zagreb lines into next month - namely to Basel, Sofia, and Brindisi until July 18.

Ex Yu Aviation adds that Sandefjord, Malaga, and Paphos flights will only run once a week until mid-July and that reductions on the lines to Bergamo, Charleroi, Hahn, Gothenburg, Malmo, Malta, Memmingen, and Weeze will also be extended. Furthermore, the Corfu line will not run until the beginning of July and will operate just one flight a week. This line was supposed to launch in June.

But this is no surprise. Recall that in January, 16 Ryanair Zagreb flights were temporarily suspended because of reduced demand due to the pandemic. This is now the fifth month this year that Ryanair has either temporarily suspended or reduced its Zagreb flights.

Thus, in June, Ryanair reduced its capacity in Zagreb by 35,000. This time, however, the Irish low-cost airline has not provided an explanation for its decision. Ex Yu Aviation writes that staffing issues and lack of equipment could carry some of the blame. The airline has two aircraft based in Zagreb when there were plans to have three.

But Zagreb isn't the only city affected. The low-cost airline has delayed many new routes from the Zadar base, too. Namely, the Helsinki, Turin, and Bournemouth routes will be pushed back by another two weeks. These lines had already been delayed until the beginning of June. Ryanair will however bring much-needed traffic to Zadar Airport this summer, operating 120 flights to 46 destinations!

35 Austrian Airlines Flights to Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Zadar, Split in June

June 1, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as 35 Austrian Airlines flights to Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Zadar, and Split will run in June.

Star Alliance member Austrian Airlines plans to operate 35 times a week to four Croatian airports in June - Zadar, Split, Dubrovnik, and Zagreb. The largest number of flights have been announced for Zagreb, while most seats are scheduled for Dubrovnik, reports Croatian Aviation

The Lufthansa Group member plans to operate to four Croatian airports in June, 35 times a week. Namely, daily flights to Zagreb, Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik have been announced, and two flights a day from Vienna to Zagreb and Dubrovnik have been announced on certain days.

Vienna and Zagreb

Austrian Airlines is announcing two flights a day between Vienna and Zagreb, every day except Wednesdays and Saturdays when one daily flight is available. According to Zagreb, this airline will use only E195 aircraft with a capacity of 120 seats. In June alone, the Vienna-Zagreb route will offer over 12,000 seats. Croatia Airlines also operates on this route, 5 times a week, every day except weekends.

Vienna and Zadar

Between Vienna and Zadar, Austrian Airlines is announcing daily flights in June with E195 and A320 aircraft. In total, more than 9,000 seats are available on 30 rotations, and Ryanair also operates on this line, four times a week.

Vienna and Split

Daily flights have also been announced between Vienna and Split, but mostly with the Airbus fleet (A320 and A321), so a larger number of seats is available, over 11,000. Croatia Airlines also operates on this route two times a week, and Hungarian Wizz Air three times a week.

Vienna and Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is traditionally the most popular summer destination in Croatia in the Austrian Airlines network, so it has a higher announcement in terms of the weekly number of flights. Namely, Austrian will operate daily from Vienna to Dubrovnik, and from mid-June, two flights a day will be available on weekends, also exclusively with the Airbus fleet (A320 and A321).

Before the pandemic, Austrian came to Dubrovnik in the summer flight schedule with wide-body aircraft type B767-300ER. In June, over 13,000 seats were available on this line. In addition to this airline, Wizz Air also operates between Dubrovnik and Vienna three times a week, and Ryanair two times a week.

Between Vienna and the four mentioned Croatian airports, Austrian Airlines will offer more than 46,000 seats in June. Developing its destination network and Vienna as an important European hub, most seats in the summer season are occupied by transfer passengers from a number of European destinations, but also those in the US to which Austrian Airlines also has direct flights.

Sosice Visitor Centre, Latest Addition to Zumberak Nature Park Near Zagreb

May 30, 2022 - Good things are happening in Zumberak Nature Park, with the Sosice Visitor Centre the latest addition to this idyllic day trip from Zagreb.

It was only after moving to Zagreb that I realised just what a wealth of tourism options lay around the city. Zagreb County has a fantastic mix of nature, adventure tourism, heritage and gastronomy, with several great day trips for those looking to explore. The Around Zagreb website has proven a great success in the last couple of years, connecting the city to the tourism of its green surroundings.

One area I have enjoyed getting to know a little better is Zumberak Nature Park, yet one more slice of Croatian natural goodness, just a short drive from Zagreb. With over 300 km of bike routes, 350 km of hiking routes, a protected cultural landscape, more than 20% of Croatia's entire flora, more than 34 archaeological sites, and several traditional villages more than 800 metres above sea level, there is a lot to explore in this very under-visited region.

107700092_10221493416299086_4111074381524847400_o.jpg

Longtime followers of TCN may recall my first visit to Zumberak a couple of years ago, transporting the first free-range wagyu cows to the eco-village of Tihocaj, high in the Zumberak hills. The four black Japanese cows were the first cows in the village for 40 years, and they certainly enjoyed their immense freedom and natural surroundings. You can read more about that project here

zumberak.jpg

The arrival of the cows (who now number 9) are perhaps symbolic of the rebirth of Zaumberak, which is undergoing something of a renaissance, after a slow and gradual decline.  The village of Tihocaj, for example, has just one inhabitant compared to about 40 more than 50 years ago - a 96-year-old lady whose house and vegetable plot are next to the field with the cows (pictured above with visitors from last year's Zagreb Digital Nomad Week to Tihocaj).

sosice-visitor-centre_4.jpg

However, a local entrepreneur is busy breathing life into the village by renovating many of the houses and turning it into an eco-farm. It is an investment which is being mirrored elsewhere in Zumberak, with the latest 30 million kuna investment officially opened a few weeks ago - the Sosice Visitor Centre.

sosice-visitor-centre_6.jpg

The centre, which was officially opened on April 11, breathes a little more life into the park, offering facilities hitherto unavailable. Among the various things on offer, Sosice Visitor Centre boasts a cafe and restaurant, as well as accommodation with 28 beds for hikers and cyclists  who want to spend the night in the park. The interactive info centre, outdoor stage and amphitheatre, as well as outdoor children's playing area.

sosice-visitor-centre_7.jpg

The aim of the project is to improve and enrich the offer of the Park with multimedia tools, as well as to enable the implementation of a school in nature for children and volunteer activities. The offer of the Park has been expanded with the purchase of electric bicycles that can be rented, and new educational boards and educational trails have been set up throughout the Park.

sosice-visitor-centre_5.jpg

The total investment of 30 million was largely co-financed by EU funds from the Operational Program Competitiveness and Cohesion, while the rest was co-financed by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund with HRK 4 million and the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development through Joint Parks Funds with HRK 2.3 million.

sosice-visitor-centre_3.jpg

"This is the largest investment in the area of Zumberak ever. In the future, we expect that several thousand students will visit us annually, who will introduce us to the values and history of this area through educational programs, as well as several thousand volunteers and about 10 thousand visitors," said the director of the Zumberak Nature Park, Kristijan Brkic.

sosice-visitor-centre_2.jpg

On behalf of the County, the opening ceremony of the Visitors' Center was attended by Deputy Prefect Damir Tomljenovic and President of the County Assembly Martina Glasnovic.

"Over the last 20 years, the number of inhabitants in this area has halved, from 1,200 to about 600, so we hope that this valuable investment will succeed in revitalizing this area," said Tomljenovic, adding that the County has invested in paving roads in Zumberak.

You can learn more about the new Sosice Visitor Centre on the dedicated project website.

The only international line of Croatia Airlines from Rijeka is the seasonal route to Munich, which remains in traffic three times a week this summer. Almost 2,000 seats are available on this line in June.

From Osijek to:
Munich, 2 times a week, Mondays and Fridays.

Osijek Airport has only one flight less per week than Rijeka, also to Munich. The line remains in traffic on Mondays and Fridays and there are slightly more than 1,200 seats available in the next month. This is also the only international line from or to Osijek Airport.
