A spectacular video insight into how life in Dalmatia used to be in the 1930s was uploaded to YouTube on January 13, 2016 by the Dugopolje Tourist Board.
Tourism in Dalmatia is changing, as people search for more authentic experiences, and more to do away from the beach. The Central Dalmatian Tourist Board has been particularly active in this regard, developing new programmes and generally promoting the Dalmatian hinterland.
A significant contributor to the impressive numbers of tourists to the region are members of the sizable diaspora, whose parents and grandparents were forced to emigrate from the region due to war, politics or the poor economy.
So what was life like in Dalmatia in the 1930s, for example. The Dugopolje Tourist Board's upload of the trailer for The Way People Live, done by Hrvoje Jelavić-Šako for Lampros film, provides a beautifully presented overview. Here is what they had to say by means of introduction:
"In 1936. young Croatian writer Zlata Perlic comes to Dalmatia to create ethnological record of the hard life of the inhabitants in the village of Dugopolje. Through the story of the young writer and local friar in live action form, described events create a circuit of lost life and world-view of the Dalmatian hinterland in the past. All elements of ethnological works on the land, birth and death, wedding and feasting are intertwined in a bitter, pungent and dignified image of Dalmatian farmers life through four seasons."
