Sustainable Hotels in Croatia: Terme Sveti Martin

By 26 February 2017

Total Eco Croatia continues our look at the sustainable hotels of Croatia with Terme Sveti Martin located in Sveti Martin na Muri in Međimurje County.

Terme Sveti Martin is a resort spa hotel that lives, breathes, and thinks “green”. With a motto that boasts “The World of Healthy Pleasures”, Terme Sveti Martin focuses on the environment under the project “Zelene Terme" (or green thermal spas) which implements various certificates and standards to ensure the company is doing green and sustainable business.

Reducing the hotel’s impact on the environment is key, and in doing so, Terme Sveti Martin conducts energy efficiency projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from stationary combustion plants, they have 5 wastewater treatment plants throughout the resort, and waste is carefully handled and disposed - which greatly reduces the amount of mixed and municipal waste which cannot be recycled. In addition, the spa hotel has also introduced balancing the pH level of their pool water with carbon dioxide to remove harmful chemicals such as sulfuric acid from the technological process.

As well as holding the “Sustainable Hotel” certificate by UPUHH, Terme Sveti Martin has been recognized for their green practices with other honors too. Terme Sveti Martin has received the ISO 50001:2011 certificate which provides organizations in the public and private sector with strategies for increasing energy efficiency, reducing cost, and improving energy performance. Furthermore, Terme Sveti Martin is the first thermal spa that introduced “ZelEn”, which is a green label obtained together with HEP (Croatian Electric Power Industry). The “ZelEn” label guarantees that the electricity used in the resort comes  from renewable energy sources - thus reducing CO2 emissions.
