Advent Festivities Begin in Zagreb and Split

By 28 November 2015

Enjoy the holiday magic in Croatia's largest cities until January 10

Zagreb is renowned for its fantastic advent festivities, and Split is not trailing far behind either anymore. Lighting of the first advent candles on symbolic Christmas wreaths in both Croatian cities on November 28, 2015, marked the beginning of an exciting month filled with events, great gastro presentations, live concerts and all out holiday cheer.

For the first time, Split had a symbolic lighting ceremony by the main fountain on the Riva where a large wreath was created. Candle was lit by the Mayor of Split Ivo Baldasar, Director of Split Tourist Board Alijana Vukšić and the Vicar General of Archdiocese Split Makarska don Miroslav Vidović.

Mayor Baldasar was thrilled to take this family holiday atmosphere to the streets of Split while director of Split Tourist Board Alijana Vukšić marked the occasion as a great overture to the merriest time of the year. Advent in Split will once again be accompanied by the now traditional houses on Riva and Pjaca, they will open on December first, while organisers are assuring us there will be no shortage of great live concerts, mulled wine and of course mouthwatering delicacies for everyone to enjoy.

An hour later, Zagreb once again proved why it is considered one of the best European Christmas destinations. First Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandić lit the first candle on the main square by Manduševac fountain and then the official lighting of thousands of Christmas lights once again turned Zrinjevac park into a magical place. More than 5 000 people turned up to witness the ceremony, and in case you missed it, there's plenty of time to feel the holiday spirit since the decorations and festivities will continue until January 10th.

To round up the official beginning of Advent in Zagreb, ice park on Tomislavec also opened its doors, as well as the popular Fuliranje and programme on the European square.
