The people of Krk seem to be on a mission: first they lure you with their fantastic local cuisine, and then they continue to serve you mouth-watering dishes to make sure you'd never want to leave. Jokes aside, that's actually turning out to be a great strategy and I fully support this. Following the first round dedicated to asparagus and the local pasta šurlice, Krk Food Fest is back for its second spring edition called Lamb and Cheese Days that will take place all over the island from May 5th to May 28th.
Wherever you drop by, chances are you'll be in luck. There are ten participating towns: Krk, Baška, Vrbnik, Klimno, Malinska, Punat,Vrh, Kornić, Glavotok and Omišalj. Put them all together, and you get a total of thirty-two restaurants and taverns preparing special themed menus, all of them serving a variety of lamb dishes throughout the month. You'll be able to enjoy delicacies such as baked lamb with potatoes, grilled lamb, lamb stew or lamb livers alla veneziana, served with typical side dishes like polenta or šurlice.
The other half of the reigning duo is the well-known Krk's cheese, a high-quality product coming from local farms. The island sheep tend to spend their days wandering around and munching on a wide array of aromatic Mediterranean herbs, which in turn gives their milk – and the resulting cheese – a rich taste and scent that makes the end product so special.
Guests are advised to wash down all that lamb with "a sip or more" of Žlahtina, Krk's famous wine. Paying a visit to one of the taverns would be worth it even if the sole goal was to see how generously people are interpreting the "or more" part.
As if a month of celebrating lamb and cheese wasn't enough, the Krk Food Fest is timed to coincide with other gourmet events on the island. The Black Sheep Festival (Crna Ovca) is planned for May 12th - 14th, pairing the food with music shows and a range of sports activities to help you ease the guilt of overindulging. Closer to the end of the month, Dubašnica near Malinska will see its annual Sensa, the traditional shepherds' race taking place on Ascension Day. The race is nowadays open to all young local men who run the traditional 200m route in pairs; everyone gets rewarded with cheese, the audience gives a round of applause, then they all proceed to feast. How can you not love this island?
You'll find a map of locations attached below, and we suggest taking a look at Ala Šu, the detailed event schedule website created by the local Tourist board. Bon appétit!
