Smile, Fishie! Underwater Photography Cup to Take Place on Vis

By 28 September 2017

We have announced the upcoming underwater photography cup that's about to take place in the waters of Biševo island near Vis months ago, but it doesn't hurt to remind everyone that the popular manifestation is finally around the corner!

On Saturday, September 30, photographers will be diving in and exploring the depths around Biševo, trying to capture the most attractive, eye-catching image of aquatic life. This year, one of the longest-running photo contests in Croatia will serve as a way to celebrate the 50th anniversary on nature preservation on Vis island.

Stiniva bay, Green Cave, Ravnik island and Medvidina Cave were officially protected as natural wonders 50 years ago, and as all the sites are located on Vis island, it was only appropriate to hold this year's photography cup on Vis to honour the Adriatic gems. The Public Institution 'More i Krš' (Sea and karst) initiated the entire undertaking in order to promote the natural beauty of Vis island and draw attention to importance of preservation of marine life.

Around 30 photographers from Croatia and abroad will be participating in the photography cup that has a 40-year tradition and is now named after a prolific underwater photographer and diver Antun Gavranić who passed away in 2002. It's an open contest, meaning all members of diving federations registered in Croatia or worldwide can participate.

Photos taken throughout the day in the waters of Biševo will later be used to embellish the spaces of the Blue Cave Visitors' Centre, a project that was applied for EU funding by the Public Institution More i krš.

Vis island is home to no less than seven protected sites; both the land and the waters around the island are part of the European eco network Natura 2000 that aims to preserve and protect caves, sand beaches, and various animal and plant species that thrive on the island.

The Underwater Photography Cup 'Antun Gavranić' kicks off on Saturday, September 30 at 9:00 and will last until 17:30, followed by a social gathering in the evening – a dinner in a local konoba, of course. On Sunday, judges will present the winners in an award ceremony at the waterfront in Komiža town.
