Rijeka Airport Adds Another New Airline: Welcome, Lufthansa!

By 13 November 2018

Rijeka Airport has added yet another new airline to the list for the upcoming season.

Today we get to share even more good news with Croatian travelers, fans of Rijeka Airport, and loyal Lufthansa passengers - Rijeka Airport has announced the arrival of Lufthansa airlines for the upcoming season, reports Avioradar.hr on November 13, 2018.

Namely, after Rijeka announced that TUI Group and Volotea would be a part of the airport's plans next year, they have added another new airline - and this time, it’s the largest German airline and, when combined with its subsidiaries, is also the largest airline in Europe.

Lufthansa, which is a member of the Global Star Alliance, will operate to Rijeka using the Canadair CRJ-900 90-seater plane, which will travel between Rijeka and Munich once a week, every Saturday, beginning May 25, 2019.

Rijeka Airport announced the news on their Facebook page on Tuesday morning.

As we said, this news comes after Volotea announced flights to Rijeka for 2019, making Rijeka the fourth destination in Croatia for the Spanish low-cost carrier.

The first route will connect Marseille and Rijeka once a week on Wednesdays starting June 5, 2019. And the best part? Starting fares are only 9 euro!

There are also two new charter lines for London and Manchester using TUI, and a significant extension of this year's new line for Eindhoven throughout the season, i.e. from April to October, which is an increase in Transavia’s operations from this year's 19 flights to 61 flights in 2019.

Rijeka Airport also achieved a record number of passengers in 2018, and on October 11, the airport welcomed 170,000 passengers. The record-breaking trip was made by Marija Percinić from the island of Rab who was on the Eurowings flight EW2963 between Rijeka and Stuttgart. Rijeka Airport’s previous record was 169,250 passengers back in 2006, reported SEEbiz.eu

In all months of 2018, record passenger traffic was recorded at Rijeka Airport - and for the first time in history, for two consecutive months (July and August), over 40,000 passengers were transported per month.

In the upcoming winter, two international lines were confirmed for Rijeka Airport - Dusseldorf with Eurowings and Munich with Croatia Airlines, and there will be a constant domestic line for Osijek, Split and Dubrovnik with Trade Air.

2019 will bring new records for Rijeka Airport, but 2018 will remain as one of the most successful in the airport's history. More than 180,000 passengers are expected to travel through the airport by the end of this year, which is an increase of almost 30% compared to 2017. This growth represents the highest percentage growth among all airports in the Republic of Croatia in 2018.
