Viktor Lenac Shipyard to Overhaul US Navy Ship

By 9 September 2017

This is another in a series of US Navy jobs for the shipyard.

The Viktor Lenac shipyard has won a new contract for the US Navy, whose logistical vessel from the Sixth Fleet USNS Trenton will come next week to be overhauled at the Martinšćica Bay, reports Index.hr on September 9, 2017.

USNS Trenton is a logistical vessel of the Sixth Fleet of the US Navy, an aluminium catamaran designed for rapid interventions for servicing other US naval ships in the Mediterranean and for the transportation of people and equipment.

The overhaul should end in early October, announced the shipyard on Saturday, saying it was a “twin” ship of the USNS Choctaw County, which was overhauled by the same shipyard in late 2015.

Aljoša Pavelin, the CEO of the shipyard, believes that the new project for the Rijeka company is critical because of the continuity of relations with the US Navy. It is also a clear message to the market about the shipyard’s strength.

Next week, there will be two US naval ships moored at the docks of the shipyard, since USS Mount Whitney, the commanding ship of the Sixth Fleet, is still there. It has undergone a major overhaul and conversion project. Additional works have been agreed for that vessel, so the revenue from the modernisation of the ship, which is also the shipyard’s most important assignment this year, will be higher than the initial expectations.

The shipyard also points out that they are successfully working on other projects. Despite a short delay, the positive trends from the first half of the year are continuing.

According to its website, Viktor Lenac is one of the leading shipyards for ship repair, overhaul and conversions in the Mediterranean. Founded in 1896, Viktor Lenac shipyard has a long tradition of ship repair and conversions and was among the first in the world to lengthen ships. With its three floating dry-docks, one accommodating vessels up to 160,000 dwt, more than 1,000 metres of berthing space, a large offshore construction site, and a highly skilled workforce, this is a modern shipyard capable of completing the most complex projects on short deadlines and up to highest standards.
