Preparations Underway for First Dive to Bottom of Red Lake

Frenchman Frederic Swierczynski will dive to the bottom of Red Lake in Imotski this weekend!

While diligent preparations have been underway for the last seven months, this weekend will see the first diver to the bottom of the Red Lake. The dangerous and very risky venture will be done by the brave Frederic Swierczynski from France. The venture will last six hours, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on May 3, 2017.

“World-renowned diver Frederic is here with his team. He arrived with his auxiliary divers, a doctor from France, and all of the diving equipment is theirs. This venture happened in collaboration with Zagreb colleagues that were investigating the sources in the area looking for salamanders. All of our minds somehow met and we gave birth to the idea for this expedition,” said Luka Kolovrat, director of the Tourist Board of Imotski, which is one of the organizers.

This will be the first time that someone has managed to dive to the bottom of the lake, which has a depth of 270-280 meters. Intense preparations for the dive began on Sunday, and the entire project involved 40 people. Scientists will also be taking samples of the flora, fauna, and sediment from the dive.

“After 30 meters there is complete darkness, and it is that way to the bottom, where there is fine silt. The venture is dangerous because at the bottom there is a pressure of about 30 kilograms per centimeter to the human body," concluded Kolovrat.

On May 7th and 8th, the equipment will be dismantled and the group will return from their venture.
