A New Sunbathing Concept for Croatian Coasts: Meet Hexagon 6G

By 3 August 2016

Hexagon 6G is a modular system of wooden decks made for relaxation and sunbathing. The first concept was implemented this July at Martulina beach in the village of Peroj in Vodnjan, Croatia.

In an effort to find a way to decorate our coastline with non-invasive yet useful tools for beach goers, BB architects and Breda Bizjak (who lives and works in Pula & Ljubljana), brought Hexagon 6G to fruition.

Bizjak and BB architects developed this product design as an alternative solution to the conventional overuse of concrete as basic construction material. The arrangements of coasts with concrete works is an irreversible process. Currently, there is no method known which could recover the coast to its pre-condition or to enable its re-naturalization, wherein Hexagon 6G comes into play, proposing a product which could prevent the devastation of coasts while at the same time cultivating them into a highly ecological, functional and aesthetic manner.

The product design takes the form of hexagonal wooden modules, dimensioned upon human body measures. Individual modules can be organized to form islands of different sizes and adjust to the site's terrain.

The base of the module is a hexagram and has a side length of 1.5 meters and an area of approx. 6.0 m2. This geometrical body has gently inclined upper surfaces adjusted to the human body in lying position. Single modules are dimensioned for a maximum of 3 persons and consists of wooden construction covered with wooden planks.

They have developed 4 different types of basic modules which could be arranged in numerous combinations variating from duos, trios or multiple module groups, thus creating unique geometric landscapes.

The manifestation of this wooden island has sculptural and artistic value but with important useful value as well. Simple assemblage on the site and the usage of all natural materials enables their installation even in the most sensitive of natural environments.

Beside usage in natural and coastal environments, these modular systems are ideal to be used in touristic, sports, and recreational spaces such as hotel resorts, camps, and parks.
