Remember when the first person ever dived to the bottom of the Red Lake in Imotski?
Back in May, Total Croatia News reported that Frenchman Frederic Swierczynski was the first person ever to dive to the bottom of the Red Lake in Imotski. You can read our story here.
After plunging 245-meters to the bottom of the karst lake, Swierczynski recalled that the water was first cloudy, and then became crystal clear while he noticed an incredible number small fish, a local species called gaovica, which have not been harvested in recent years. During the dive, scientists set coops, trawl-lines, and fishing nets at various depths of the lake so they could learn more about what organisms exactly are populating the lake.
Following that thought, Swierczynski will embark on yet another scientific expedition of the Red Lake this year in hopes of a more detailed exploration of what lies within the lake, reports Dalmacija Danas on August 23, 2017.
This September, the French diver will examine the openings of the lake from the north side of the cliffs where the water enters the lake, and take samples of flora and fauna which will then be passed on to experts.
Once the dive is complete, we will have an expert opinion of the life in this natural phenomenon.
This dive was just part of the wonderful promotion the Red Lake in Imotski received this year. Do you remember when Austrian tourists (or as we like to call them, daredevils) slacklined across the Red Lake this June? You can check out the video below.
Or how about when 50 Teslas participating in the Nikola Tesla EV Rally visited the lakes just hours after the Austrian tourists braved across them?
And of course, we must not forget when Imotski was coined as the “Croatian Tuscany”. Did you know that there are 156 swimming pools in the area now?
Earlier this month, Imotski also celebrated 300 years of liberation from the Ottoman Empire. As you can imagine, there was a big celebration.
What a year it has been for Imotski, and it’s not over yet. We’ll report back in September with fellow Frenchman Frederic Swierczynski - stay tuned!
