Wind Speed in Istria and Rijeka over 100 kmh, Red Alert Issued for Kvarner Region

By 25 February 2018

Snowfalls and blizzards are causing major traffic issues all over the country, joined by another troublemaker: bura, the freezing northern wind which is currently reaching impressive speeds.

A weather station at Fortica in the Istrian town of Labin recorded a gust of bura of 103 kmh, reports Glas Istre on February 25, 2018. While the wider Labin area saw a temperature of -2 degrees Celsius earlier today, wind chill is making it seem like it's -22 °C outside.

Wind speed reached 102 kmh in Rijeka, 90 kmh in Baška town on Krk island, and 80 kmh in Pula.

Let's take a moment to remember bura's awe-inspiring impact, albeit at a somewhat higher speed:

The considerable temperature drop recorded on Sunday will continue in the following days, with most parts of the country bracing for sub-zero temperatures even during day time - a rare occasion for the regions of Istria and Kvarner. During next week, central Istria might see temperature dropping to staggering -15 degrees Celsius, -10 degrees on the coast; both are considered extremely low for this time of year.

Meteoalarm issued a red alert for the Kvarner region, owing to announced freezing conditions and tempestuous wind which might reach a speed of 120 kmh. An orange alert was issued for Istria, where bura is expected to cause traffic issues as well.

The cold wave we've been experiencing for the last couple of days is expected to let up on Thursday, giving way to southern jugo wind with a chance of rainfall.
