Split Tourism Workers Talk 2019 Season and What Needs to Change

August 19, 2019 - Slobodna Dalmacija met with tourism workers in Split to discuss the 2019 summer season and how they would help to improve it in the future. “Split is full of tourists and has about the same number as last year. Whether it's a little more or less, no one wants to reveal accurate information. However, what is of interest to us, who work in tourism and live off of it, is to bring in less of the 'cheaper' tourists because it would reduce the crowds (which in the peak season are created in the city port), but,…

Palace Elisabeth Hvar Heritage Hotel Opening Its 5-Star Doors Within 2 Weeks

August 18, 2019 - Palace Elisabeth, the first 5-star hotel on Hvar will open its doors on September 1 for a soft opening - the new flagship hotel of Suncani Hvar. I have been following the story of Suncani Hvar Hotels ever since I moved to the island permanently back in 2003. As the biggest employer on the island with the most hotels in the main tourist town, they have always been an important part of Hvar's tourism story. The takeover by ORCO Group and the big renovations of 2006 certainly helped raise standards in the post-war era, but the…

Split Tourism Finally Slowing Down as Peak Summer Season Nears End

August 18, 2019 - There are more tourist departures than arrivals at the Split Airport and Ferry Port this weekend, showing the first signs that this year's tourist season is nearing its end in Dalmatia. "On Saturday and Sunday, about 70,000 passengers and 12,500 vehicles will travel through the Split ferry port, of which about 60 percent are tourists returning from the islands, and 40 percent are those who are leaving for the islands," said Jelena Ivulić, head of Jadrolinija in Split, for Splitski Dnevnik. According to Ivulić, three extra ferry lines for Supetar (Brač) - Split were introduced on…

The Mediterranean as It Once Was: Sibenik in 1968 (VIDEO)

August 17, 2019 - Continuing our look at the Adriatic coast as it once was, a journey back in time over 50 years ago to gorgeous Sibenik 1968. It is one of my favourite cities in Croatia, and one of its most underrated.  Nestled between more fashionable Split and Zadar, each with their own airports, Sibenik is probably the less discovered gem of the bigger settlements on the Adriatic coast.  That is slowly changing, however, as the City of Stone Fortresses asserts its cultural heritage. For here you will find not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Cathedral…

Der Tagesspiegel Hits Croatian Tourism, Highlights Fewer Tourists and Poor Accommodation

August 17, 2019 - German daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel poorly advertised Croatian tourism with the help of numerous reports from Croatian media this summer.  And if you’ve kept up with all things Croatia this summer, the negativity should come as no surprise - and many who have experienced the benefits of Croatian tourism this year will even say that it is quite realistic, reports Vijesti.hr. Namely, Der Tagesspiegel writes that Croatian beaches and ferries are half-empty this summer and that apartment owners are panicking because they did not have as many guests as they anticipated.  More specifically, in the first…

Hvar Emergency Response Saving Lives: Timeframe from Boat to Split Hospital

August 14, 2019 - As the investigation into the death of an Italian tourist focuses on carbon monoxide poisoning on his chartered boat, spare a thought for the fantastic Hvar emergency response which undoubtedly helped save the lives of others.  It is the top story in Croatia, and one which is evolving rapidly.  As previously reported on TCN, 57-year-old Italian tourist Eugenio Vinci was found dead on his charter boat yesterday, with five other passengers also seriously ill.  Initial reports pinpointed a well-known Hvar restaurant as the possible cause after it emerged that the group had dined there and ate…
