Vrsi, One of Croatia's Youngest Municipalities, Welcomes More Tourists than Ever

August 14, 2019 - While many complain that this year's tourist season did not live up to expectations, one of the youngest municipalities in the Republic of Croatia is feeling quite the opposite - meet Vrsi. Namely, this municipality within Zadar County is recording a plus in both the arrival of guests and the number of overnights, and its Tourist Board is unaware of July’s black hole, the low occupancy of apartment accommodation, and the drop in overnights despite the increase in accommodation, reports Jutarnji List. Instead, the latest results published by the Vrsi Tourist Board reveal that a 4…

Croatia to be Branded as 'Gastronomic Icon of Europe' with New Project

August 14, 2019 - A new project sets out to make Croatia a gastronomic icon of Europe. Earlier this year, in collaboration with WYG Counseling, the Institute for Tourism and the Institute for Development and International Relations, a major project was completed entitled "Croatia, the New Gastronomic Icon of Europe: A Strategy for the Development of Gastronomy, Gourmet, and Gastronomic Tourism in Croatia with an Action Plan 2019 - 2022," reports HRTurizam. TCN’s Mario Jukić was at the closing conference of the Gourmet Croatia project back in March, held at the Principovac estate near the easternmost Croatian town of Ilok. …

Condé Nast Traveller Recommends Holidaying in Šibenik in August

August the 14th, 2019 - Šibenik is without a doubt one of the Dalmatian coast's must-see destinations, but in comparison to cities like Split and Dubrovnik, it often ends up somewhat in the shadows. Wrongly so. This UNESCO city with more history, culture and heritage than one can imagine is home to not only the International Children's Festival, but numerous stunning fortresses, gorgeous beaches, and much more. Often referred to as a gate to the glorious Kornati islands, this city is unlike the majority of other, similar cities dotted along Croatia's stunning coasline, Šibenik was not established by the Greeks,…

Testing Naval Myths: Do Women on Board Bring Bad Luck?

August 13, 2019 - A snapshot of a sailing holiday around the island of Vis with new TCN writer, Dear Leader Joe. I still clearly remember the advice my old mother gave me before I went sailing: “Eat a lot of cabbage so you don’t get scurvy!” Namely, everyone from my parents' sh*thole village is an expert in sailing. Magellan is nothing comparing to them. I could not explain to her that I wasn’t going on a trip around the world, just on a three-day cruise around Kornati. This year, she was sustained. “You eat at fancy restaurants, you sail and…

French Magazine 'Le Figaro' Falls in Love with Slavonia

August 13, 2019 - Slavonia is in the French spotlight!  One of France's most influential media outlets, the Le Figaro Magazine, published a major 10-page report on Slavonia in its weekly issue. The report was prepared by Jean-Louis Tremblais, a journalist and lover of Croatia, in collaboration with Eric Martin, one of the most respected French photographers, reports HRTurizam. In September last year, the duo, organized by the Croatian National Tourist Board, stayed in Osijek-Baranja and Vukovar-Srijem counties, and their "Slavonian experiences" were translated into a sizeable photographic report entitled "On the Borders of Croatia. A Terrace on the Danube."…

Number of Croatia's Inland Campsites Has Increased Twofold over Decade

ZAGREB, August 12, 2019 - This summer Croatia got two new campsites in the interior of the country: one within the Terme Tuhelj spa and the other at Vrhovine in the mountainous region of Lika – which increased the number of inland campsites to about 30. The director of the National Association of Camps (KUH), Adriano Palman, has told Hina that the number of inland camping facilities has risen twofold over the past 10 years. In Croatia there are a total of 785 campsites with accommodation capacities for 248,500 people. Of them, some 30 are in the interior of the…

Lumbarda on Korcula Wins 2019 Vecernji List Tourist Patrol

August 12, 2019 - Congratulations to Lumbarda, winners of this year's Vecernji List Tourism Patrol award.  A nice boost for tourism in Lumbarda on Korcula, which has won the prestigious Tourism Patrol award, Croatia's oldest tourism award, organised by newspaper Vecernji List since 1975. Vecernji reporters visit all the major destinations incognito and assess the quality of the tourism offer of each destination, before announcing a champion. Winners from 2013-2018 were Vis, Trogir, Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Korcula Town. Lumbarda is known for its great beaches, relaxed lifestyle and one of Croatia's finest white wine grape varieties, Grk. TCN last…

Move Over Burning Man: Liberland's Floating Man Coming to Croatian Border

August 12, 2019 - The first Liberland Floating Man festival will take place on Croatia's border later this week. It is more than four years since a Czech man planted a flag in a marshy piece of land on the shores of the Danube and declared the founding of the Free State of Liberland, a story which went around the world and soon attracted more than half a million applications for Liberland citizenship.  Almost five years later, the Croatian authorities continue their opposition to the settling of Liberland by Liberland President Vit Jedlicka and his growing army of supporters, but…

American Airlines to Service Dubrovnik Daily in 2020

As many of you are already aware, American Airlines connected Croatia and the United States for the first time in 28 years this year. Namely, the Oneworld member began seasonal operations between Philadelphia and Dubrovnik from June 7, which will run until September 27, 2019. The American Airlines service operates using a 209-seat Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with a capacity of 28 seats in business class and 181 seats in economy class, and Wi-Fi services are available throughout the entire flight. After the airline already boosted operations this year to add a fourth weekly flight on Sundays in September, the airline has…

Thirsty? A Pop Up Bar on the Top of Hvar

August 11, 2019 - The luxury tourism sector in Croatia is having a great season, with agencies such as Hvar Tours using innovative ways to show the very best of the country.  It took me quite some time when writing about tourism on the island of Hvar to realise that most of the best stories never reach the public domain. Indeed, the island has a reputation for being very egalitarian and a place where celebrities can relax and be left alone. And unless you are a British prince falling drunkenly into a nightclub swimming pool, celebrity visits generally go unreported,…

Finally! Meet Plan Hvar, a Comprehensive Bilingual Events Calendar

August 11, 2019 - A major step forward in tourist information on Hvar, as Plan Hvar is launched with the aid of EU funding.  Tourist information has come a long way since I started Total Hvar way back in 2011. Back then, it was almost unheard of to see events promoted in anything but Croatian. Quite how tourists were supposed to know what was going on did not seem to be important.  And then there was the timing of the announcements - usually some posters put on various notice boards only locals would know about, followed by a Facebook announcement…
