Carpe Diem Swaps The Yacht Week for Hvar Wine Tasting Afternoons

July 30, 2019 - As Hvar moves its tourism story away from the party, is a new service from Carpe Diem the biggest symbol of change in the new direction? Meet Taste Croatia, Carpe Diem style.  A few months ago, I met and interviewed Petar Razovic, the new Hvar Town Tourist Board director, who had been in the position just over a year. I had assumed it would be just another standard interview listening to the same old stories, but there was something different about Razovic and his vision for Hvar. You can read the interview here. He seemed determined…

Never Eaten a Dormouse? Puhijada 2019 Showcases Dol Culture on Hvar

Hvar's most popular festival, the Puhijada, will take place once more from August 5 to August 10, 2019, as the village of Dol celebrates its traditions, including its gourmet treat, the edible dormouse.   Yes, I didn't quite believe it either. An edible dormouse festival?!? I first heard about the Puhijada dormouse festival in Dol while researching for my first Hvar guidebook way back in 2011. Dormouse, or 'Puh', I learned was only hunted in three places in Croatia - Dol on Hvar and Dol on Brac, where they put the dormice on the grill, and up in Gorski Kotar, where…

July 29. 2019 - Continuing our journey back in time on Croatia's Adriatic Coast, a visit to 1950s Split. The stylish riva in Split may be the place to be seen relaxing over a three-hour coffee, but it was only pedestrianised relatively recently.  Before that, there was a busy road between the sea and Diocletian's Palace, a road that included horses and even double-decker buses back in the 1950s.  In the latest in our series looking back at the Adriatic Coast as It Once Was, take a looks at the Dalmatian coast over 60 years ago.

Djokovic on the A-List as The Times Discovers Glamping at Festa on Zut

July 29, 2019 - One of the great success stories of the Adriatic has been discovered a Wimbledon winner, a Russian Prime Minister, and now The Times of London - Festa on Zut, now with glamping.  While lots of people are complaining about a poor tourist season in Croatia, my observations from the many people I have spoken to is that those with something really quality to offer are not complaining at all. Indeed, some are even having record seasons, as we learned yesterday from Ante Lacman from Hvar Tours, the first in our series of Croatian businesses enjoying a…

No Overtourism in Dubovnik Today as Stradun Floods (VIDEO)

July 28, 2019 - Croatia's crazy weather continues with Dubrovnik's famous Stradun flooded in late July after torrential rain.  Today is arguably the craziest day of weather in this crazy summer of 2019.  We went to bed with firefighters battling a huge fire near Sibenik which temporarily closed to main A1 motorway from Zagreb to Split.  We awoke to 50 firefighters another huge fire near Zarace on Hvar, as 50 firefighters battles the blaze successfully.  Rain came to assist the heroic Sibenik fighters, and the situation is now under control. But that rain continued. And how. You can see more…
