New US Ambassador Arrives in Zagreb

By 10 January 2018

The Ambassador was appointed by US President Donald Trump.

New US Ambassador to Croatia Robert Kohorst has arrived in Zagreb, the Embassy of the United States of America announced on its official Twitter profile, reports N1 on January, 10, 2018.

Kohorst has replaced Juliet Valls Noyes before her term expired. She became ambassador in September 2015, and in early September 2017, it was announced that Kohorst would replace her. Rumours that Valls Noyes would be recalled started circulating for the very beginning of Donald Trump’s presidential term, because – although a career diplomat – she was considered close to the administration of former US President Barack Obama, while Kohorst is a private entrepreneur from the real estate business close to Trump.

Kohorst has no experience in diplomacy, and he was appointed to his new post in Zagreb by President Trump as one of his political appointees. US Presidents often nominate ambassadors as a reward for the support shown during the presidential election campaign or for donating funds to the campaign.

In addition to his real estate business, Kohorst is also known as an important donor of the Republican Party and a member of the Trump’s committee for raising funds during the presidential transition.

Kohorst is a real estate magnate whose company Everet Properties deals with renting out apartments and warehouse units in the United States and with buying and selling land. He was also the director of Tiger Shark golf equipment manufacturer, as well as of Masquerade International, a company which produces various costumes.
