The Long Goodbye Of 2CELLOS: The Duo Who Revolutionised Cello As An Instrument

June 1, 2022 - TCN attended the World Tour of 2Cellos in Brussels where the acclaimed classical-crossover duo, consisting of the extraordinary cellists Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser, gave a long goodbye to all their fans for their final tour together.

Despite the general strike in Belgium and the European Summit at the Council of EU, yesterday, 2Cellos performed in Palais 12 at a concert which was totally sold out (all 15,000 seats). The audience consisting of all ages wasn't only delighted by the musical virtuosity which played out during the hour and a half show, but also enjoyed dancing and singing together with the famous Croatian cellists.

The duo was joined on stage, as usual, by Croatian drummer Dusan Kranjc.

It was a difficult farewell for the audience, but the two musicians had already communicated several times they have both taken different paths. Luka is more of a family man now, with three children and a wife, and Hauser continues to be ambitious, full of ideas and eager to keep going, conquering the world and playing his music everywhere. Having different approaches to life, they thought it was best to take separate paths but will still remain great friends.

The two Croatian cellists are known for performing famous songs by U2, Leonard Cohen, Guns N’ Roses, Michael Jackson and Nirvana, and are now touring to promote their sixth full-length studio album called “Dedicated.” They have also recently released an extended edition of “Dedicated” that features three brand new bonus tracks — covers of Ed Sheeran’s “Castle on the Hill,” the Beatles’ “Yesterday”, and Linkin Park’s “Castle of Glass”. They won three Porin awards (Croatia’s version of the Grammys) and received the prestigious Order of Danica Hrvatska in their homeland with this last album.

When Stjepan Hauser and Luka Šulić began studying the cello during their youth in Croatia, they had no idea they’d be recording rock ‘n’ roll classics, playing to sold-out arenas and collaborating with music giants like Elton John and other pop icons.

They met as teenagers, as both studied at the Academy of Music in Zagreb, then again later at different schools in England. Though the cello wasn’t a favoured instrument even in the classical world, they both liked it and felt the drive to play well and bring the cello the respect they thought it deserved, not just limiting it to one kind of music. Using Hauser’s words: “We wanted to make it [the cello] feel younger, and we wanted to feel like rock stars, ’cause we were young and rebellious, and we wanted to feel this freedom and do whatever we wanted to do.”

Both have worked independently during the past 12 years, and as they part ways, Hauser, in particular, is ready to go all in with his own solo career.

2Cellos to End Their Final Tour in Arena Zagreb

February 28th, 2022 - It all started in Zagreb, and that’s where they wish for their story to end, says the famous duo

After ten years, six studio albums, hundreds of performances in iconic venues around the world and close to a million tickets sold, the globally acclaimed duo 2Cellos are about to retire the project that made them famous.

Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser have announced their long-awaited world tour will end with a final concert in Zagreb, reports Jutarnji list.

They’ll play the Arena Zagreb on September 19th, 2022. This is the last year that Šulić and Hauser will be performing together as 2Cellos.

The duo went on hiatus in 2018 and focused on solo projects for a while, only to be reunited by the pandemic which brought them together to work on new music. They released their sixth studio album ‘Dedicated’ in 2021.

‘This tour is the culmination of everything we’ve achieved as 2Cellos. These will be our most powerful shows, with the largest audiences. The two of us climbed a mountain and reached the peak of what we can do together. Everything we learned from playing together, we’ll put into this tour. The concerts will be intense, they’ll be fierce, they’ll be touching and emotional. We’ll give everything we can do to the audience - and then we can retire 2Cellos. Are you ready to celebrate that with us?’ asked Luka and Stjepan.

It wasn’t a coincidence that the European part of the tour ends in Zagreb. As the duo said, they started it all in Zagreb, and that’s where they wish for their story to end.

The announced show is an opportunity for all their fans in Croatia and the region to hear 2Cellos play live for the last time. And as they themselves stated, the tour will be loaded with energy and emotion like never before - and Zagreb gets the honour to see their final bow.

Tickets will be released on Eventim on Friday, March 4th with prices ranging from 230 to 1800 kuna.

2CELLOS "Dedicated" Album Released with "Sweet Child O 'Mine" Music Video

September 19, 2021 - The new 2CELLOS "Dedicated" album has been released alongside a music video covering the Guns' N' Roses hit "Sweet Child O 'Mine."

The globally popular 2CELLOS - Stjepan Hauser and Luka Šulić have released the long-awaited, sixth studio album "Dedicated" (Sony Masterworks / Menart) and released a new music video for "Sweet Child O 'Mine," a cover of the Guns' N' Roses hit, reports Glas Istre

The video was shot in the former Svetica military hangar in Šišan, produced again by Medvid. Pula drummer Dušan Kranjc joined Hauser and Šulić, and their performance has already been called "damn epic" in one comment.

"It's one of the legendary classics, which we had to cover! We've been thinking about recording a song for a long time. This is our typical 2CELLOS style - rock 'n' roll with cello! That's how we started and what we're back to now. We needed it so much, and we are happy that we finally did it!" said Stjepan Hauser and Luka Šulić about the new release.

After taking the time for their successful solo projects, the cello duo used the pandemic to reconnect, enter the studio, and record pop anthems and timeless rock songs. The song list is a combination of instinct, study, and exercise. Šulić and Hauser researched a diverse catalog and gave selected songs their recognizable trademark, breaking all boundaries.

Among the songs they covered in the new album are "Bad guy" by Billie Eilish, "Shallow" by Lady Gaga, "Halo" by Beyonce, "Livin 'on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi, "Cryin'" by Aerosmith, "Demons" by Imagine Dragons, "Wherever I Go" by One Republic and "Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel.

"As you listen to us, we hope you realize how versatile the cello is, that it is possible to play the fiercest rock, the most tender ballad, and contemporary music. It powerfully drives you. It has a whole range of emotions, ups and downs. We want to give you an experience that you can’t get it anywhere else," they added.

With "Dedicated," 2CELLOS celebrate their 10th anniversary. The album name is appropriate because of their continued commitment to the band, fans, cello, and recognizable playing style. The album will also be promoted on a long-awaited tour starting next year in the US.

VIDEO: Stjepan Hauser of 2Cellos Holds Empty Pula Arena Concert 'Alone, Together'

April 28, 2020 - Thousands around the world watched Stjepan Hauser serenade an empty Pula Arena from their computer screens Monday night.

Just like the many musicians around the globe who are dedicating their music to everyone fighting against COVID-19, so did Croatia’s celebrated cellist Stephen Hauser of 2Cellos fame.

Glas Istre reported that Hauser held a special concert in an empty Pula arena, which was streamed on YouTube Monday night. The concert aimed to send a message of thanks to all those risking their lives to save ours.

At 7 pm, thousands of fans around the world jumped onto YouTube to watch the musical spectacle, which you can find in the video below.

One important note was sent before the concert - don't go to the Arena, because the concert was pre-recorded.

“Thanks to everyone for the considerable interest in the live-streamed concert on Monday, just like wanting to come to the Arena to see the event. Since we have received information that people are planning to go to the Arena at the time of the streaming, which is by no means allowed or safe, it is important to know that the concert was recorded in advance and the streaming will be held as scheduled.

Public gatherings are banned and I did not want you to endanger your health and put you in unnecessary danger. After all, this is why I decided to stream this kind of concert, so you could follow it from the safety of your homes,” Hauser said.

The concert is dedicated to those in the fight against COVID-19. Hauser also supported the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund in this way.

“In these difficult times, the human spirit showed all its strength. We have found it in the people who surround us every day and whose extraordinary work saves lives, the workers on the front line, and all of us who stayed home. Although we are forced to be separated, we remain together. Staying together while keeping a distance and finding hope in our humanity,” Hauser said.

Get Ready for 'Game of Thrones' Final Season with 2CELLOS (VIDEO)

April 13, 2019 - Unless you live in a cave, you’re probably aware that the final season of Game of Thrones airs on Sunday, April 14. Even if you’ve never seen an episode of the wildly popular TV series, it’s safe to say that you’re somewhat familiar with the show’s drama - and that fans will enter a severe post-Game of Thrones depression once the final episode airs in just over a month.

For those of you gearing up for the end while recapping the first seven seasons, and for those of you who really could care less, we have something both diehard GoT fans and anyone with an ear for music will enjoy.

You might recall that back at the beginning of 2017, Croatia’s favorite cello duo released the first single off of their critically acclaimed album ‘Score,’ which was released in March of 2017. Namely, the album featured 14 theme songs from famous blockbusters which were recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra - often considered ”the best orchestra in the world".

There was no better way to announce the new album than with a taste of Game of Thrones, and Stjepan Hauser andLuka and Stjepan of 2CELLOS fame did just that, in the heart of Kings Landing - Dubrovnik.

“We filmed the video in the beautiful Dubrovnik where 'Game of Thrones' is filmed. We are happy that with our videos, we have the opportunity to show the world the beauty of our country, and this time the beauty of Dubrovnik where we particularly have ties because of Luka’s family,” said Stjepan Hauser back in 2017 of the music video directed by Darko Drinovec.

Today, in an effort to prepare GoT fans for what lies ahead, we’re bringing you back to January 13, 2017, when the 2CELLOS released their take on the ultra-famous Game of Thrones theme song.

You can watch the full video below.

2Cellos to End? Stjepan Hauser Announces Break

The popular Croatian duo 2Cellos seems to be at a major turning point, as far as their professional musical careers are concerned. This has been confirmed by Stjepan Hauser for RTL on October 29, 2018.

The cello player has announced that he and Luka Šulić will take a break during which they will, as he pointed out, rest a bit from the crazy regime which they have followed in recent years. “We had more than 200 flights a year. The life we were living over the past eight years is simply out of this world, we really did overdo it. We have to move away from everything, we want to devote ourselves to other things in life, make a healthy break, sort everything out in our heads. When that happens, if it happens, we can then continue,” Hauser said.

The guys will still embark on an American and Australian tour that is scheduled to end in April next year. After that, Stjepan Hauser will focus on a solo career, while Luka will devote his time to his wife Tamara and son Val.

“We have been playing as 2Cellos for the last eight years and it is crazy to try to leave this life. But, I am fortunately ready to take risk and get out of my comfort zone. I am proud of myself as far as that is concerned,” Hauser concluded.

In addition to all the successes they had, they recently managed to record a new album and write two new songs. One of them is devoted to the most powerful and the fastest electric car in the world, Mate Rimac’s Concept Two. “We are so proud with the way it sounds. It is called c2, and we are 2c, so it makes perfect sense,” said Hauser, talking about what might be one of 2Cellos’s final projects together.
