Brits Are Leaving: British Airways Sending Larger Planes to Croatia

August 21, 2020 - After the UK added Croatia to the quarantine list on Thursday, British Airways is busy bringing citizens back to Britain.

Croatian Aviation reports that in order to meet the high demand that arose after Croatia was included on the list of quarantine countries, British Airways will land in all three Croatian airports today with an A321NEO aircraft.

British Airways normally operates to Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik on smaller capacity aircraft, but today, due to high demand from British tourists who want to return home before the new measures come into force (14-day self-isolation for all passengers coming from Croatia), regular routes to the three mentioned airports use a larger capacity aircraft - A321 NEO. This aircraft has a capacity of as many as 235 passengers (for comparison, A319 and A320 aircraft with a capacity of 144 to 180 seats usually operate in Croatia).

In addition to British Airways, which will operate two flights from Split Airport today, three easyJet aircraft (capacity 180 passengers) will take off for London, as well as WizzAir aircraft A321 (capacity 230 passengers).

In addition to the British Airways flight, Dubrovnik Airport will have another EasyJet flight to London and one to Bristol (on both flights the maximum capacity is 180 passengers).

Today, Croatia Airlines will operate a regular flight on the Zagreb - London Heathrow route, but instead of the A319, a larger capacity aircraft - the A320 - will operate today.

Given the number of seats offered, it is clear that this is not enough for all tourists from Croatia to return to the UK on time, before the introduction of restrictive measures. After all, certain routes have already been sold out, while prices on some flights have exceeded the average several times.

We remind you that from Saturday, August 22, all passengers entering the UK from Croatia will have to go into 14 days of self-isolation.

According to information from the UK, there are currently 20,000 tourists from that country in Croatia. Britain views Croatia as a whole, without regional or county demarcations, and warns that the situation has deteriorated dramatically compared to three weeks ago.

Britain refers to the latest data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, according to which Croatia has recorded 37.7 confirmed infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last two weeks. For comparison, Britain records 21.2 infected, Slovenia 12.8, and Sweden 39.5.

Flights to Croatia: KLM Reduces Split, Norwegian Air Cancels Copenhagen-Zagreb Service

August 21, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Zagreb and Split.

Croatian Aviation reports that from August to October 2020, Dutch KLM offers flights to 92 European destinations. A look at the flight schedule for September to Croatian airports.

For comparison, in 2019, in the same period in August, KLM performed 19,000 flights, in September 18,800, and in October 14,700 flights. In August 2020, 10,000 flights are expected, in September 13,500, and in October 11,000 flights.

KLM will continue to operate on the Amsterdam-Zagreb route daily, and in September, and in addition to KLM's direct flights, Croatia Airlines also operates on this route, also every day of the week.

KLM's other destination in Croatia is Split Airport, where this Dutch company currently has 12 flights a week (two flights a day every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and one flight a day on Fridays and Saturdays).

From September 1, KLM will significantly reduce the number of weekly flights on the route Amsterdam-Split and will operate only three times a week, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through September, with smaller capacity aircraft - E190.

Furthermore, Norwegian Air will not return to Zagreb Airport this year.

Norwegian Air, a well-known low-budget company with bases across Europe, will not return to Zagreb Airport this year. The company operated on the Copenhagen-Zagreb route in the summer flight schedule, but it was completely canceled for this year.

The line used to be year-round, but the company turned it into a seasonal line at the end of 2018. Now, due to the coronavirus crisis, it will cancel it completely for this year.

Norwegian Air operated from Stockholm to Zagreb twice a week, but that line was previously suspended and is no longer in operation.

The Copenhagen-Zagreb line was operated twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, in the summer flight schedule. It is not yet certain whether Norwegian will return to Zagreb in the summer flight schedule in 2021, given that many routes have not yet been announced for next year.

On the Copenhagen-Zagreb route, Croatia Airlines operates, every day of the week, on the A319 and DashQ400 aircraft.

Flights to Croatia: easyJet Closes Three UK Bases, Cancels Flights to Croatia

August 19, 2020 -  The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Split, Dubrovnik, and Pula.

Croatian Aviation reports that British low-cost carrier easyJet issued a statement on its website on Tuesday announcing the imminent closure of its three large bases in the UK, solely due to reduced demand caused by the global coronavirus pandemic.

There are two airports in London, Stansted and Southend, and the company's base in Newcastle. From all three mentioned airports, there are direct easyJet flights to Croatia, more precisely, to Pula, Split and Dubrovnik.

“We had to take the very difficult decision to close three UK bases as a result of the unprecedented impact of the pandemic and related travel restrictions, compounded by quarantine measures in the UK which is impacting demand for travel. We would like to reassure customers due to fly from these airports that we are now contacting anyone whose flight is affected with clear advice on their options which include rerouting via alternative airports or receiving a full refund," easyJet CEO, Johan Lundgren, said.

The closure of these bases will happen very soon, as early as September 1, with the announcement that traffic from these airports will resume in the summer flight schedule in 2021. easyJet will operate on the following lines to Croatia until the end of August, and some of them have already been canceled.

  • London Stansted - Dubrovnik
  • London Stansted - Split
  • London Southend - Dubrovnik
  • London Southend - Pula
  • Newcastle - Split

easyJet will operate from London (Gatwick Airport) to Dubrovnik, Split and Pula in September, so passengers planning a trip from Stansted or Southend Airport will be able to change their departure airport from London free of charge.

Passengers who have purchased a ticket on the line Newcastle - Split for September, will have to use the line from Manchester to arrive at Split Airport. That line will also run throughout September.

Flights to Croatia: Austrian Airlines Continues to Operate Despite Border Restrictions

August 18, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik.

Croatian Aviation reports that Austrian national carrier Austria Airlines has confirmed that it will continue to operate to four Croatian airports, despite measures introduced at the border between Croatia and Austria.

Namely, Austrian Airlines will continue to operate to Croatia and in September from Vienna to four Croatian airports: Zagreb, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik.

The Zagreb - Vienna line will operate 6 days a week, every day except Saturday in the afternoon.

The Zadar - Vienna line will operate until September 12, as previously planned, four times a week (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays).

The Split - Vienna line will also be in operation in September, from September 1 to 13, every day except Wednesday. From September 15 to 20, the line will operate five times a week (there are no flights on Mondays and Wednesdays), while from September 22, there will be three flights a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Dubrovnik - Vienna line will operate 6 times a week in September, every day except Tuesday.

Considering the Austrian Airlines network throughout Europe, the company has a large share of transfer passengers to destinations in Croatia, that are not subject to the new measures introduced on the border between Croatia and Austria. For this reason, the company currently plans to operate to Croatia according to the schedule we have specified.

Recall, as of Monday, August 17, all travelers arriving from Croatia have to carry a medical certificate proving a negative COIVID-19 PCR test.

Furthermore, Ex-Yu Aviation reports that low-cost carrier easyJet will end a handful of routes, mostly to the Croatian coast, as they close three UK bases - Stansted, Southend and Newcastle. The discontinued routes include Stansted to Dubrovnik and Split, from Southend to Dubrovnik and Pula, and from Newcastle to Split. The closure will come into effect from September 1.

August 17, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Zadar, and Osijek.

Croatian Aviation reports that Eurowings, a low-budget German airline owned by the Lufthansa Group, has announced its flight schedule for September this year.

The company was among the first to establish regular traffic to Croatia, but as the end of the summer season approaches, Eurowings will also reduce the number of weekly flights to specific destinations.

Find the complete flight schedule to Croatian destinations below.

40 operations a week to Split

Split Airport will still have the largest number of Eurowings flights. Moreover, the number of weekly flights in September will be higher than in August!

Split - Hamburg will operate 4 times a week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays), one flight extra than in August,

Split - Berlin will operate twice a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays), one extra flight compared to August.

Rijeka and Zadar see reduced traffic, the line to Osijek is canceled

Osijek - Stuttgart line will not be in operation in September this year.

Eurowings returns to Dubrovnik

As announced earlier, Eurowings will re-establish traffic to Dubrovnik in September. Initially, the company planned to launch four lines, but canceled the line from Cologne.

The following lines are planned for September this year:

Dubrovnik - Dusseldorf will be in traffic once a week, on Sundays,

Dubrovnik - Berlin will be in traffic once a week, on Sundays,

Dubrovnik - Hamburg line will be open once a week, on Sundays.

Zagreb connected with Stuttgart and Cologne

In September, Eurowings will continue to operate two routes to Zagreb Airport, from Stuttgart and Cologne.

Zagreb - Stuttgart will operate 4 times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays,

Zagreb - Cologne will operate 5 times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, which is one flight more than in August.

In total, Eurowings will have 76 weekly operations (takeoffs and landings) at 6 Croatian airports in September.

Flights to Croatia: Ryanair Announces New Line to Pula

August 17, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Pula.

Croatian Aviation reports that among the numerous cancellations and reductions of weekly flights to destinations in Croatia, there was some positive news. Ryanair has announced a new line to Pula for next spring.

Namely, the Irish low-cost airline plans to launch a new route between Pula and Vienna in the spring of 2021.

The Pula-Vienna route is currently planned from the first day of the summer flight schedule next year (March 28, 2021), twice a week, every Wednesday and Sunday, until autumn - specifically until the end of October (October 27, 2021).

The A320 aircraft of the partner company Lauda (pictured), which has its base at Vienna Airport, has been announced on the route. The capacity of the aircraft is 180 seats.

There have been no direct commercial flights between Vienna and Pula so far, but Austrian Airlines has previously operated charter flights from several destinations in Austria to Pula Airport.

This is the first announcement of a new line to Pula Airport for next year, but traffic will certainly depend on epidemiological measures in the next summer season.

This summer season, Ryanair connects Pula Airport with three international destinations: London, Berlin and Brussels.

In the first seven months of this year, Pula Airport had a turnover of 23,621 passengers, which is a decrease compared to last year of over 94%.

Recall, last week, TCN reported that British Airways would reduce the number of weekly flights to Zagreb in September this year.

British Airways currently operates daily between London (Heathrow Airport) and Zagreb, on A319 and A320 aircraft. Given the occupancy of the passenger cabin and reduced demand, the company decided to reduce the number of weekly flights on the said route in September this year.

From September 1 on the London - Zagreb route, British Airways aircraft will operate six times a week, every day except Wednesday, while from September 7, there will be five flights per week on the route. Namely, the flight will be additionally canceled on Tuesdays.

Changes are certainly still possible, but unfortunately not in the direction of increasing weekly flights, especially with the fact that the number of patients with COVID-19 in the Republic of Croatia is growing significantly.

Other British Airways routes in Croatia (to Dubrovnik, Split and Pula) have no operational changes so far.

Croatia Airlines currently offers three flights a week on the route Zagreb - London Heathrow throughout September (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), but the flight schedule for next month has not yet been finalized.

Furthermore, Aeroflot has completely canceled the Moscow - Split route, to which it planned to return in August, and there are no announced flights to Dubrovnik or Zagreb.

Before the pandemic, Russian Aeroflot operated daily on the Moscow (Sheremetyevo Airport) - Zagreb route, both in summer and winter.

The line was suspended at the time of the pandemic and has not resumed until now. However, according to the announcements from the airline, there will be no direct flights between the two capitals this year. The company plans to make a significant restructuring after the crisis, and according to current announcements, we can expect a direct air connection between Moscow and Zagreb only in April 2021.

Aeroflot even announced the launch of its seasonal route Moscow - Split in August this year, airline tickets were already on sale, but given the regulations at the state borders, it was to be expected that flights would be canceled, which eventually happened.

The third Aeroflot line in Croatia, the one to Dubrovnik, was withdrawn from sale in March, so Croatia will not have a direct connection with the capital of Russia this year.

In the summer flight schedule, the Croatian national carrier operates on the Zagreb - St. Petersburg line, but that line was also canceled for this year.

Aeroflot's last visit to Croatia was on May 2 this year, when a B777 aircraft landed at Zagreb Airport for the first time, transporting medical equipment from China via Moscow to the Croatian capital.

Flights to Croatia: British Airways Reduces Zagreb Service

August 15, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik.

Croatian Aviation reports that OneWorld alliance member British Airways will reduce the number of weekly flights to Zagreb in September this year.

British Airways currently operates daily between London (Heathrow Airport) and Zagreb, on A319 and A320 aircraft. Given the occupancy of the passenger cabin and reduced demand, the company decided to reduce the number of weekly flights on the said route in September this year.

Flights to Croatia: Vueling Reduces Traffic to Split and Dubrovnik

August 13, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, and Brac.

Croatian Aviation reports that Spanish low-cost airline Vueling has announced its flight schedule for September in which it will reduce the number of weekly flights to Split and Dubrovnik.

In July, Vueling had 14 weekly operations from Barcelona and Rome to Dubrovnik, while the number of weekly operations to Split was smaller - 12 times a week. The company will continue to operate to Split and Dubrovnik in September according to the following schedule:

Barcelona - Dubrovnik, twice a week (Tuesdays and Sundays),

Rome - Dubrovnik, twice a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays),

Barcelona - Split, twice a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays),

Rome - Split, twice a week (Tuesdays and Sundays).

In the peak season, the company had four flights a week on the Rome - Dubrovnik route, and three flights a week on the lines Barcelona - Dubrovnik, Rome - Split and Barcelona - Split. As we approach the end of the summer season, a reduction in the number of weekly flights is to be expected, so Vueling's move is not surprising.

Also, the Barcelona - Zagreb line will continue to operate in September, once a week, every Saturday evening. Vueling will thus fly to three airports in Croatia next month, with 18 operations a week.

Furthermore, Croatian Aviation reports that Croatia Airlines will still not use A319 aircraft on a regular route from Zagreb to Brac, and on charter flights from Brac to Austria (Graz and Linz).

Namely, the company previously announced an increase in capacity on these routes, given that the charterer of these charter flights requested a higher capacity aircraft. From the end of August, Croatia Airlines planned to use an A319 aircraft every Saturday on the regular domestic route Zagreb - Brac due to the positioning of the aircraft at this airport, from where charter flights to Graz and Linz were to be made.

The national company conducted training flights with this type of aircraft in the airspace around the island of Brac on July 11 this year, preparing for regular operations.

The mentioned flights were not canceled. Croatia Airlines will continue to operate on a regular route from Zagreb to Brac, as well as on charter routes from Brac to Graz and Linz, but with a capacity of 76 seats (DashQ400).

Recall, German Sundair announced a regular charter line between Frankfurt and Brač, but that line was also canceled.

Flights to Croatia: 36 Flights Available between Frankfurt and Croatia, Air France Reduces Zagreb

August 11, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Pula, Rijeka, Osijek and Brac.

Croatian Aviation reports that although Air France announced the introduction of a second daily flight on the Paris-Zagreb route, it did not materialize.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Air France announced the introduction of a second daily flight to Zagreb, and the company planned to offer as many as 14 direct flights a week between Paris and Zagreb, but due to reduced demand, the plans have been canceled. The second daily flight was to land from Paris to Zagreb in the late evening, overnight in Zagreb, and depart on the return flight to Paris early the next morning.

However, in July, the company announced traffic on the Paris-Zagreb route 11 times a week, where two daily flights were planned every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, but this also did not materialize. Air France thus operates seven times a week between the two cities, with one flight a day.

Air France still operates to Split and Dubrovnik, where flights take place as planned; to Split six times a week (every day except Saturday), and to Dubrovnik four times a week (Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays).

Croatia Airlines operates to Paris from Split once a week, from Dubrovnik three times a week, and from Zagreb every day.

Croatian Aviation reports that France isn't the only country that is well connected with Croatia. Last weekend (August 8 and 9), just like every peak season weekend, Croatian airports were well connected with Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Airport received and dispatched over 70 million passengers (70,556,072) in 2019, ranking fourth among the busiest airports in Europe (ahead of only Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and London Heathrow).

Last weekend, Split Airport had the largest number of seats offered on the lines to and from Frankfurt. On Saturday, German Lufthansa used an A321 aircraft with a capacity of 215 passengers (430 seats in both directions), while Croatia Airlines operated an A319 aircraft with a capacity of 144 passengers (288 seats in both directions). On Sunday, Lufthansa again used an A321 aircraft with a capacity of 200 passengers, while Croatia Airlines offered the same capacity on the route as on Saturday. However, on Sunday, German Condor flew to Split on a B757 aircraft with a capacity of as many as 275 passengers, so only this airline offered 550 seats in both directions, for a total of 1956 seats available!

The second airport in terms of the number of seats offered on the route to Frankfurt is Zagreb Airport. As Lufthansa has not resumed traffic at Zagreb Airport, only Croatia Airlines operates on this route. Last Saturday and Sunday saw three flights a day. Croatia Airlines used A319 aircraft with a capacity of 144 passengers on all flights, while one flight was performed every day with a 9A-CTN aircraft with a slightly larger capacity, 150 passengers. In total - 1752 seats on sale on direct flights between these two airports.

The third airport in Croatia in terms of connections with Frankfurt was Dubrovnik Airport. Lufthansa landed in Dubrovnik on Saturday on an A321 aircraft with a capacity of 200 passengers, while Croatia Airlines flew to Frankfurt on an A319 aircraft. On Sunday, Croatia Airlines offered the same capacity as the previous day, while Lufthansa used a smaller A320neo on the route, which has a capacity of 180 passengers. There were 1336 seats available on direct flights between Dubrovnik and Frankfurt.

This year, Croatia Airlines does not offer direct flights from Zadar to Frankfurt, but Lufthansa has resumed traffic to Zadar Airport, and the line is available on both Saturdays and Sundays. On Saturday, the A319 aircraft with a capacity of 138 passengers operated on the route, while on Sunday, the A320neo with a capacity of 180 passengers operated. In total, in both directions, 636 seats were available.

As is the case at Zadar Airport, this year, Croatia Airlines does not operate direct flights from Pula to Frankfurt. Lufthansa restored traffic, but only on Saturdays, so there was no direct flight between Pula and Frankfurt on Sunday. The Embraer E190, with a capacity of 120 passengers, landed in Pula on Saturday, so a total of 240 seats were available on this line.

Other airports in Croatia - Osijek, Brac and Rijeka, do not have direct flights to Frankfurt in this year's summer flight schedule. It should be mentioned that Rijeka is connected to Frankfurt Hahn Airport, where Ryanair operates, and the line is available on Saturdays.

In conclusion, a total of 5,920 seats on as many as 36 flights were available between the five Croatian airports and Frankfurt last weekend! Given that Frankfurt is a well-known European and world hub, the number of seats offered is no surprise, especially when the number of direct flights to Croatian airports has been reduced this year, so many passengers are forced to change at one of the European airports to arrive in Croatia.
