Peristil is Ready for Tonight's European Water Polo Championship Draw

April 23, 2022 - The most important European water polo tournament will be held in Split from August 27 to September 10, and the group draw for the European Water Polo Championship will be held at the symbolic Peristil tonight in a special setting.

Summer is approaching and Split is busy preparing for the European Water Polo Championships, which will take place from August 27 to September 10. It is a big event for the town at the foot of Marjan, the biggest in the last few years, reports Slobodna Dalmacija.

In addition to the tournament, the city is also preparing for the spectacle of drawing the groups. If there is a reason to use the term ''spectacle', it is precisely because there is a lot of expectation for this event, since it will be held in nothing more and nothing less than the imposing Peristil, inside Diocletian's Palace. Especially for this occasion, the organizers made an effort to turn one of the symbols of the city into a real water polo stage.

peristil-water-polo.png

This is how the Peristil will look for tonight's group draw for the European Water Polo Championship. (Image: Slobodna Dalmacija)

As the organizers pointed out, this symbol of history will be, this time, in the service of sports. The stage will be located at the foot of the main Protiron and the arch under which the emperor appeared in the past. Under the stone columns, there will be an auditorium for about 200 guests, and among them numerous dignitaries from sports and social life.

This new and special image of the Peristil will serve as a great advertisement for Croatia. Tourism, which has long been a cornerstone in our country, will get another boost. During the championship, as many as 28 national teams (12 women's and 16 men's) will be in Split with more than 600 athletes and support staff, along with 100 judges and representatives of the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN). More than 300 journalists and 600 people are expected to take part in the organization as well.

These are numbers that speak for themselves. A massive spectacle is being prepared in Split, and its first act is scheduled for tonight at 8 pm when the Water Polo Euro group draw begins on the "new" Peristil. A dynamic entertainment program has also been announced, with numerous audiovisual effects that will give a new glow to the centuries-old stone square.

Drawing groups is a great overture to everything that awaits us in the competition itself. The tournament will be accompanied by a series of entertainment events, concerts, museum exhibitions, congresses ... Guests, both domestic and foreign, will be able to enjoy the varied offer, and all together will once again see what kind of host Split always is.

The whole story about holding the European Water Polo Championship in Split started in 2018. Two pools will be temporarily set up inside the Spaladium Arena, the main one for competitions and the auxiliary one for warming up.

Sudamja 2022: Split City Day Celebrations Return after Two Years

April 22, 2022 - Sv. Duje celebrations return after two years to honor Split's patron saint, Saint Dominus. The City has announced a packed program for Sudamja 2022!

Thanks to the more favorable epidemiological situation, this year's Sv. Duje celebration, or Split City Day, will return to the old normal. The Sudamja 2022 program, adopted by this year's Celebration Committee, includes over thirty religious, cultural, entertainment, and sports manifestations. This year's laureates are well-known, who will be awarded prizes for their life's work and personal and group achievements in the past year at a ceremony at the Croatian National Theater in Split on May 6, the day before Sv. Duje.

The events related to Sudamja started on March 15 with the Ballot Tournament, organized every Saturday in the Split port, and ends on May 15 with a revival race of rowing legends Oxford, Cambridge, and Split in the City Port. However, the most intense events start on April 28, which is the beginning of the Novena in honor of Sv. Duje. From that day on, Holy Masses, sermons, and concerts of spiritual music will be held daily in the Split Cathedral until May 7, when after the procession from Perstil through Hrvojeva Street to the Riva, a Mass will be held on the Riva led by the Apostolic Nuncio to Croatia Giorgio Lingua.

Numerous KUD performances and other events are planned, organized by the Split Tourist Board, while much of the entertainment was taken over by the city company Žnjan d.o.o. The first program is on Marjan to mark International Labor Day, May 1, then the traditional Sudamja fair on May 6 and 7, and a concert on the waterfront on Split City Day, May 7, where Klapa Cambi Kaštela, Goran Karan, and Grupa Vagabundo will perform. After the fireworks, Tedi Spalato and the Goran Rukavina Orchestra will hit the stage. This year, the traditional raffle with the performance of the mixed klapa Filip Dević before the start of the draw will not be missed.

This year's classical music concerts include the string philharmonic of the Berlin Philharmonic at the Croatian Home in Tončićeva and a joint performance by the Varaždin Tamburitza Orchestra with tamburitza players KUD Jedinstvo and Klapa Sv. Juraj-HRM after the raffle on May 7 on the Riva.

Two-Year Wait is Over: Breakfast is BACK at Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar!

April 22, 2022 - It's been a long two years without the morning grub at one of our favorite wine and dine spots in Split. But we are happy to announce that the wait is now over - and breakfast is back at Zinfandel Food & Wine Bar!

It's no surprise that the sister restaurant of one of Split's best Riva breakfast spots has been known to serve up a mean morning meal, but when we say that Zinfandel breakfast is back and better than ever after two-year hiatus, you know we are talking about the real deal.

Not only is Zinfandel serving the famous brekky dishes from Brasserie on 7, like the hollandaise-heavy eggs benedict and carmelized banana french toast topped with cinnamon cream cheese, but they're rolling out several new breakfast dishes that'll ensure your day starts on the right foot.

Break the day with a selection of new dishes, including the spicy 'Turkish eggs' or poached eggs with garlic-infused yogurt sauce, chili & pepper, and butter sauce.

turkisheggsspoondrip.jpeg

If you're looking for the ultimate hangover cure or something to hold you over until dinner, dig into the hearty gourmet breakfast baguette, stuffed with two fried eggs, ham, rocket, and aioli.

Since no breakfast menu is complete without eggs Florentine, Zinfandel crafts theirs with hollandaise, baby spinach, mushrooms, and homemade English muffins.

acaibowlangle.jpeg

Those wanting to keep things a light should choose the Greek yogurt and chia parfait, with housemade toasted granola, lime, and honey, or the Superfood smoothie bowl with spirulina, baby spinach, toasted granola, and fresh fruits.

freshfruitontable.jpeg

A fresh fruit platter is also on offer for breakfast.

There is no reason to let your tummies grumble until lunchtime. Whether you're looking for something light, classic, or keep you full throughout the day, Zinfandel has something for everyone.

Split Fast Food Scene: Best Grilled Chicken, Ćevapi, Burek and Sandwiches

April 22, 2022 - Aa breakdown of the Split fast food scene with go-to tips for the best grilled chicken, ćevapi, burek, and sandwiches in the city.

Split like any city in Croatia has a lot of fast food places that serve street food and are adored by both the locals and the foreigners. But still, I have this thesis that Splićani have a unique relationship with their fast foods.

People from Split aka Splićani adore food but are always in a hurry since they try to fit 15 hours in a 12-hour day. So it is not a coincidence that this form of food preparation is very common in our everyday life.  There is a rumour that once you cross the Sveti Rok tunnel, you cannot order a boiled egg as a topping in most fast food places. I cannot imagine a world without boiled eggs as a topping.

I will try to divide the Split fast food scene into the following categories: best grilled chicken, best čevapi, best burek, and best sandwich since these are the most preferred meals.

Best grilled chicken

This meal is extremely popular in Split, and it is usually less frequent in other parts of the country. You get a flatbread or tortilla with grilled chicken fillet in it and you choose the toppings (vegetables, sauces, etc.). This quick and tasty meal is best at Kaleta, Šešula, Ježurko and Bili Pivac. Kaleta is plain and simple but certainly one of the most popular ones, because of their freshly baked flatbreads and perfectly seasoned chicken.  Šešula offers some innovative combinations such as chicken and shrimps, chicken with prosciutto and Parmigiano, and chicken with asparagus and bacon, all served inside a flatbread. Ježurko is famed for its "čarobna" (translates into magical) which is deep-fried chicken breast filled with cheese and ham served in a bread bun. And last but not least is Bili Pivac, which is not technically in Split but on the outskirts of it, in the suburb of Strožanac. Bili Pivac offers 8 different chicken dishes called “Travel around the world in 8 chicken sandwiches” which include Italiano, Americano, Curry, Mexican fire, Dalmatinac, Gyros, Slavonac, and Gorgonzola. The fact that Splićani travel outside of the city just to eat their chicken speaks volumes about them.

Best ćevapi

Ćevapi is a traditional grilled meat dish that originates from Bosnia and Herzegovina but is widely represented across the Balkan region. Ćevap is grilled minced meat rolled like a small sausage and it is served inside a flatbread with toppings which include “ajvar” (roasted pepper and eggplant spread),  “kajmak” (clotted cream-like product), and onions. It is worth mentioning that Ćevapi are usually served in sit-down restaurants, but in Split, they are often eaten on the go.

The best čevapi in Split are the following Gyros, Densi, Ba!će, Lozo, and Kantun Paulina. Everyone in Split has their favourite place to eat čevapi and each one has its own style so I would simply recommend trying them all.

Best burek

Burek is a traditional dish originating from Turkey, but again very popular in Croatia. It is a savory pastry filled with cheese, meat, and other combinations. We can distinguish between two types of burek, the traditional one baked in a round baking tin and cut into triangles and the other one which is rolled in a spiral and more commonly called pita. The triangle one can be found in every bakery as part of their usual offering but there is also ST-Burek which is specialized in burek. On the other hand, Burek Pita Jelo and Moja jedina Pita are specialized in making spiral burek and they offer a larger variety of fillings besides the regular meat and cheese, such as pumpkin, leeks, spinach, and other combinations.

Best sandwich

I don't know if this is a thing in other parts of Croatia or in other parts of the world, but Splićani have a love for sandwiches. Every fast food in Split has a sandwich as part of its offer and it is usually the most modest meal but at the same time one of the most popular, especially among the younger generation. In Split, a sandwich is called "topli" which translates to warm, but it is actually a toasted sandwich with ham, cheese, and toppings. I would recommend Loza, Medeni, Popaj, and Sedmica for this type of fast food.

The absolute king of un-toasted freshly made sandwiches is Rizzo sandwich bar. Rizzo deserves a special sub-category among sandwiches since it is praised for its freshly baked bread and aa delicious variety of ingredients.

Needless to say, the Split fast food scene is very specific since every food facility that offers the aforementioned meals is considered fast food and there is simply a bunch of those. Fast foods are changing as time goes by, but these meals are sure to stay for a long time while offering fast, simple, and on-the-go meals for locals as well as tourists.

Hajduk Tops Dinamo 1:0 at Poljud, Stays in Fight for Croatian Championship Title!

April 20, 2022 - Hajduk and Dinamo met in the biggest Croatian derby at Poljud Stadium tonight in Split, the makeup 9th round match which was meant to be played at the end of last year. Hajduk's 1:0 victory tonight keeps them in the fight for the Croatian championship title!

Hajduk and Dinamo met tonight for the third time this season, making up the 9th-round match scheduled for the end of last year. In the 18th round, Hajduk won 2:0 at Maksimir, and in the 27th round at the end of March in Split, it ended 0:0. These two rivals will meet again in the last 36th round at Maksimir on May 21.

The stakes in today's game were exceptionally high for Hajduk, who needed a victory to stay in the race for the Croatian championship title. Defeat would leave Hajduk 10 points behind Dinamo, which was at the top going into the match with 66 points. Hajduk was in third place with 59 points, while Osijek has 64 points.

Hajduk sold 29,000 tickets by Tuesday, and more than 2,500 Hajduk fans gathered at the Poljud training ground on Monday to announce their support for the Split club.

Lineups

HAJDUK: L.Kalinić, Mikanović, Ferro, Elez, Melnjak, Vuković, Krovinović, Fossati, Mlakar, Livaja, N.Kalinić

DINAMO: Livaković, Theophile, Šutalo, Lauritsen, Ristovski, Mišić, Ademi, Petković, Gojak, Emreli, Oršić

Recap

Dinamo was the first to attack with a corner in the 2nd minute, which Kalinic saved. Emreli went down in the penalty area from the play, which brought the game to a halt for nearly 5 minutes.

Tensions were high in the first 10 minutes, with loud shouts to the ref from Hajduk fans. A dangerous free-kick was awarded to Hajduk in the 10th minute, which Krovinovic took just outside the box. However, Dinamo's defense was solid to clear it.

Nikola Kalinic pressured Livakovic in the 13th minute, which forced him to clear the ball. Hajduk got their first corner a minute later. After back and forth in front of Dinamo's goal, it eventually ended in Livakovic's hands.

Hajduk fans were constantly whistling against the ref, who seemed to be calling more for Dinamo in the first 20 minutes. Dinamo pressured Hajduk's defense in the 21st minute and was awarded their second corner of the match. Hajduk's defense cleared it.

Melnjak and Lauritsen had a nasty collision during the corner, which ended in bandaged heads for them. The match finally resumed after another 5-minute injury break.

After another collision between Livaja and Petkovic, Melnajk decided he could no longer continue, and Colina was brought on as Hajduk's first substitution in the 31st minute.

Foul after foul, the match slowly went on.

Hajduk picked up the intensity in the 36th minute and almost had a chance on Dinamo's empty goal, but Livakovic made it back in time for the save.

Dambrauskas' assistant Skinderis was sent off with a red car for mouthing to the ref in the 40th minute. To say that tensions were high at this point would be an understatement.

With so many fouls, there was hardly any rhythm in the game for either team. As a result, ten minutes of stoppage time was added to the first half.

Hajduk was awarded a corner in the 4th minute of stoppage time, but Krovinovic ultimately shot wide of the far post. Dinamo attacked in the next play, which was cleared out for a throw-in by Hajduk's defense.

Livaja nearly had a one-on-one with Livakovic, but Dinamo's defense double-teamed him to stop the attack.

The first half ended 0:0 with 50/50 possession and Hajduk's 2 shots on target to Dinamo's 0.

The second half started without any changes. Vukovic had two shots within a minute which were both cleared by the Dinamo defense. Mlakar shot at Livakovic minute later.

Dinamo attacked in the next play but Emreli shanked over the goal. Dinamo subbed on Ivanusec for Gojak in the 54th minute.

Hajduk had another brilliant chance in front of the goal in the 55th minute. Livaja sent the ball into the near post but it was saved by the Dinamo defense.

Petkovic and Orsic were essentially neutralized by the Hajduk defense in the match so far.

Orsic tried shooting from 30 meters but hit high over the post in the 61st minute.

Hajduk was hungrier this half which ultimately ended in a goal. Nikola Kalinic hit a far-post rocket into the back of Dinamo's net for 1:0 in the 63rd minute!

Dinamo made another sub in the 66th minute - Spikic was subbed on for Ristovski.

Dinamo picked up the pace in the 5 minutes that followed. Kalinic's fingertips saved the day from Dinamo equalizing in the 69th minute, sending it out for a corner.

Dinamo subbed again in the 74th - Tolic came on for Misic, and Hajduk subbed off Vukovic for Sahiti.

Livaja shot wide of the far post in the 77th minute, as did Tolic for Dinamo one minute later.

In the 84th minute, Hajduk subbed off Colina for Simic and Nikola Kalinic for Lovrencsics. Dambrauskas was making a defensive decision with 5 minutes left.

Livaja was shown a yellow card in the 88th-minute meaning he'll miss the next match against Belupo.

Six minutes of stoppage time was added to the end of the match. Dinamo had a dangerous chance in the next minute with Kalinic's save going out for a corner.

Livaja was one-on-one again with Dinamo's last defender and sent the ball to Mlakar who shot over the goal. Neither team was able to score in the time that remained...

The match ended 1:0 for Hajduk!

April 19, 2022 - The latest flight news to Croatia as Aer Lingus Split and Dubrovnik flights will only operate this summer as the Irish airline excludes Pula from its 2022 summer flight schedule.

This year, the Irish airline Aer Lingus is operating to only two Croatian airports, Dubrovnik and Split, reports Croatian Aviation.

Namely, Aer Lingus will not operate in this year's summer flight schedule on a regular line between Dublin and Pula. The line was last in service before the pandemic. Aer Lingus remains present exclusively in Dalmatia, Split and Dubrovnik.

The line between Dublin and Dubrovnik will be open from the first day of May and offers three flights a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, until the end of September. Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair also operates between these two cities. As of this summer, Croatia Airlines will also offer this route, moving it from Zagreb to Split in the peak summer season.

Everything is ready for the new edition of the Split Open, an ATP Challenger tournament with a prize fund of 45,730 euros, which will be played from next Monday to Sunday (April 18-24) on the grounds of Tennis Club Firule. A press conference was held on Friday in Split to announce the next edition of the tournament, reports HTS.

"We are all happy that the tournament starts in a few days. This is a great opportunity for our players. Borna Gojo and Duje Ajduković are in the main tournament, and several more of our tennis players will play in the qualifications. So I hope that time will serve us as well. I started my tennis career here," said the tournament director and famous Croatian tennis player Jelena Kostanić.

"We are delighted that the Challenger will be played in Split. I think we have the best location in the world for tennis courts. Therefore, this is the best invitation, not only to the players and guests but also to our citizens," said the president of the Split Tourist Board, Alijana Vukšić.

"From the beginning, the city of Split has supported this tournament. This is a great opportunity for young players to gain valuable experience. I would like us to enjoy great matches and have as many spectators as possible. It is also important that the tournament is held during the pre-season," said the representative of the City of Split, Igor Maretic.

"In addition to the Challenger, we have added two Futures where players pay for accommodation themselves. I want to thank the City for recognizing the project in these dark times. Many of our citizens and recreational players are satisfied with this event," said the president of TK Split 1950, Ivica Kekez.

2022 Split Tourism Figures: 4,000 Tourists Expected over Easter Weekend

April 16, 2022 - The 2022 Split tourism figures are already higher than the record in 2019, and around 4,000 tourists are expected during Easter weekend.

Tourists are quickly beginning to fill all Split cafes and restaurants, which is an excellent introduction to the upcoming tourist season. After two pandemic years, a return to the 'old normal' is expected, reports Dalmacija Danas

In the peak season, in July and August, it is impossible to pass through the city center due to thousands of guests, though they are increasing numbers in the pre-season.

Tourism workers in the city center are full of optimism, hoping that this tourist season will be better than the record 2019, a time before the coronavirus and epidemiological measures that have restricted tourism for two years.

Split Tourist Board director Alijana Vukšić spoke about what we can expect this pre-season on Friday:

"Currently, there are over three thousand guests in the city, and we expect over four thousand for the holidays. We have cruisers in the city, today - there are two, and tomorrow there will be two. These are all projections; we will know the exact numbers when all this is over. That number is certainly much higher because there are many excursionists," Vukšić said.

Split is already recording good tourist results.

"We can compare the numbers with the most successful year, i.e., 2019. The city of Split in the first three months and the first 15 days of April recorded better results than in 2019. In the first three months of this year, we have 30,000 more nights than then. We hope that this tourist year will be successful, and the facts and figures in these first three months speak in favor of that," says Alijana Vukšić.

Apart from foreign guests, there are also many from Croatia.

"There are many guests from Croatia, and the USA, Germany, France, and Ukraine are represented in large numbers, which has recently recorded an increased number of arrivals and overnight stays," Vukšić adds.

Easter events have been happening in the city for ten days now, and there is something for everyone.

"The Association of Veterans painted large Easter eggs on the Riva together with children; the Juraj Bonači Center also painted Easter eggs. They are exhibited in Đardin, which we declared an Easter park this year. We also have several music and stage programs," Alijana Vukšić concluded and congratulated her fellow citizens on Easter.

Episode of Travel Man Show in Split Was Broadcast on British Channel 4

April 14, 2022 - The Travel Man show, watched by over 2 million viewers in the UK and other parts of the world, featured Split as one of the newest destinations for its 10th season, with the hosts enjoying the culture, sights, activities, and cuisine of the popular Dalmatian town.

British comedian Joe Lycett and Irish comedian, actress, and writer with a British address, Aisling Bea, spent 48 hours in Split, reports Slobodna Dalmacija. This is the second episode of the 10th season of the humorous travel show "Travel Man: 48 hours in ...", which was recently broadcast on the popular British channel Channel 4. This 30-minute episode is entirely dedicated to Split, a popular Croatian destination where the main actors, Joe and Aisling, among other things, tried SUP, visited Froggyland, tasted Split's eno-gastronomic delicacies, and enjoyed a walk with dogs in an organized tour of the Foundation for the Protection of Animals Split, praised the Croatian Tourist Board.

"After two years with very little travel, the Travel Man episode dedicated to Split focuses on exactly what the British have longed for, and these are summer activities, the sea, and culture, all under the clear and sunny skies of Split", said  Darija Reić, director of the CNTB Representation in London.

The Travel Man show is watched by over 2 million viewers in the UK, with an additional multi-million reverberation in countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, and India.

Critics of the Daily Mail had numerous objections to the work of Joe and Aisling, so the episode only received a 2/5 rating, while on IMDB it received a 4/10 rating. However, it should be noted that only one rating has been left on the IMDB so far and that episodes from previous seasons mostly had a rating of 7/10.

You can watch the full episode on the official Channel 4 page.
