Dubrovnik Achieves 3 Million Overnight Stays 5 Days Earlier Than Last Year

By 4 September 2018

The Pearl of the Adriatic beats its own record yet again!

It isn't exactly difficult to understand why Dubrovnik suffers under the often somewhat crushing weight of its own wild popularity. The city was a sight to behold long before its Game of Thrones days which saw it propelled even further (and much more abruptly) into the limelight, not only for tourists wanting to uncover this Southern Croatian gem, but for film and TV buffs wanting to get a taste of the real ''King's Landing''.

While Lovrijenac might not look quite like it does on the TV in front of your couch, and Stradun is far from a land of peace, Dubrovnik just keeps on attracting tourists from all walks of life and from all over the globe. Not called the Pearl of the Adriatic for no reason, Croatia's southernmost city needs very little help in maintaining its royalty-like status as one of the world's ''must visit'' destinations, and its reputation of being by far Croatia's most famous destination.

As SEEbiz.eu writes on the 3rd of September, 2018, in the first eight months of 2018, Dubrovnik managed to realise visits of 921,5,000 tourists, which is six percent more than was recorded at the same time last year, while more than three million overnight stays were reached by the last day of August this year, which comes five days earlier than it did last year, as was reported by the Dubrovnik Tourist Board.

For the assessing of the results of physical tourist traffic for the first eight months of this year, the Dubrovnik Tourist Board reports data from collected by eVisitor, but this leaves out nautical tourism data, according to which, from the beginning of the year to the end of August, 3.06 million overnight stays were realised in the southern Dalmatian city, which is four percent more than there were during the very same period last year.

In the first eight months of this year, most tourists to visit Dubrovnik were tourists from Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, domestic tourists from other parts of Croatia, Finland, and Norway. The most numerous visitors from outside of Europe were from the United States and Australia.

Nearly half the total number of tourists who came to Dubrovnik during the aforementioned time period, (more specifically 473,000 of them) stayed in hotels, which is an increase of five percent when compared to the same period back in 2017, while a slight increase of two percent was recorded by Dubrovnik's various hotels realising 1.6 million overnight stays.

Private accommodation in Dubrovnik, with slightly more than 336,000 tourist arrivals and 1.1 million overnight stays, has increased by 11 percent when it comes to arrivals and is actually seven percent down on overnight stays.

According to the tourist board's data, in August this year alone, Dubrovnik was visited by almost 226,8,000 tourists, equal to seven percent more than in August 2017, while the 807,5,000 overnight stay increase meant a three percent increase in comparison to the same period in 2017.

As the city's tourist board data suggests, at present, nearly 20,000 tourists are staying in Dubrovnik, where the continuation of positive trends is expected in the post-season, up until the very end of this year, especially due to the congress season which foresees numerous events.

The excellent tourist season has also made itself known in the wider Dubrovnik-Neretva County area, with data confirming that in the first eight months of 2018, 1.55 million tourist arrivals and 6.77 million overnight stays were realised, which, when compared to the same period of last year, equals a six percent increase when it comes to arrivals, and a three percent increase in overnight stays.

According to the information published on the Dubrovnik-Neretva County website, 2.6 million overnight stays (0.5 percent more than during the same period last year) have been realised in hotel accommodation from the beginning of this year to the end of August, private/family accommodation facilities recorded 2.9 million overnight stays (six percent more), and camps/campsites managed to achieve 353,347 overnight stays (equal to that recorded during the same period last year).
