First Five Star Camp in Dalmatia Opened, Set to Operate All Year

While hotels and private apartments are both rife along the Croatian coast, particularly in Dalmatia, there's still room for another type of tourism which until now has sort of ''kept its head down'' - camping. While camping has of course always existed and been made possible in Croatia, particularly in rural Istria, it hasn't been something that has had much investment or effort put into it until quite recently, with the emergence of the popularity of glamping and other takes on it. Falkensteiner, which has been present in Croatia for a long time now, has bitten the bullet and opened…

Zagreb Again Breaking All Tourism Records This Year

In spite of the extremely high temperatures in June and now in early July, the streets of Zagreb are filled with tourists, zagreb.info writes, who are breaking the tourism records of the capital. While the most oft-repeated cliche about the shortcoming of Croatian tourism is just selling "the sun and the sea", Zagreb is successful, and it doesn't have the sea as the selling point. Without the sea around, the sun can be more of a liability when it gets really hot! So, what has Zagreb done to make up for its obvious lack of the seaside? They've created a…

Is Korcula Really a 'Mini Dubrovnik'? Please, May It Never Be

July 4, 2019 - Two idyllic and historic stone towns on the Adriatic, but is Korcula really a 'mini Dubrovnik'?  The Dalmatian coast in the summer is a fascinating - and spectacular - place to be. Endless sunshine, divine beaches, the inviting water and plenty of historic towns to savour. From mass tourism to something a little more private, there is plenty of choice depending on your tastes and budget.  I have spent the last couple of weeks travelling extensively along the coast - Kornati islands, Zadar, Split, Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik, and it has been an interesting exercise observing…

Croatian Tourism Presented in Australia for the First Time

For the first time ever, the Croatian Tourist Board organised the presentation of Croatian tourism in Australia. The presentation and the workshop were attended by 70 Australian tourist agents and seven largest tour-operators in Melbourne. It was organised together with the Tourist Board of Slovenia, under the title "Experience Croatia, Feel Slovenia". Kristjan Staničić, the Croatian Tourist Board's director, commented on the event, saying that the number of people attending made everyone at HTZ very happy, as presentations and workshops are held so often. Last year, more than 243,000 people visited Croatia from Australia, which is a significant growth of almost…

Flights to Croatia: Iberia Express Now Connecting Zadar Airport and Madrid

Zadar Airport recorded their strongest month yet in June this year, which is also reflected in the results for the first half of the year, when almost 300,000 passengers, or an increase of 38 percent, traveled through Zadar Airport compared to the same period last year, reports 057info.hr and Poslovni.hr on July 3, 2019. In June alone, Zadar Airport recorded flights by 746 aircraft, which is about 170 more than in May this year, and based on the announcements for the summer flight schedule, these positive trends are expected to continue in the other summer months. The most significant contribution…

Emanuele Donalisio Excels at JRE Chefs on Sea at Lesic Dimitri, Korcula

July 2, 2019 - Partnering with resident Lesic Dimitri chef Marko Gajski, Emanuele Donalisio put on a night to remember on Saturday's JRE Chefs on Sea dinner on Korcula.  Before we talk about the food, I have to tell you about the wind.  For it is it one of the great unmarketed gems of life in Korcula Town during the hottest months. As others swelter, guests in Korcula relax with a glass of wine as the constant gentle breeze keeps temperatures at an altogether more acceptable level.  Since first discovering it a couple of years ago, the terrace at Lesic…

This is an important year for tourism in Hvar Town. A year after celebrating 150 years of the birth of organised tourism in Europe with the founding of the Hvar Health Society in 1868, 2019 also has some significant happenings which are restoring the island's standing as a place of culture and tradition. The opening of the oldest public theatre in Europe after a 20-year renovation, as well as…

New Split Metro: A Total Fiasco?

July 2, 2019 - Not even one month after the city and county leaders were photographed in the brand new, air-conditioned train on the inaugural ride from Kopilica to the Split Ferry Port, a dated, vintage locomotive could be seen on the Split railroad tracks this week. So, why has a much older model replaced our modern metro? Slobodna Dalmacija consulted HŽ Passenger Transport Company to find out more.  “Since we have a new 7023 series train running on the Split - Split suburbs route and vice versa, on which the air conditioner broke the day before yesterday, in its…

A Simple Plan to Contain Overtourism in Dubrovnik (and Elsewhere)

July 2, 2019 - The season of overtourism is in full swing in cities such as Venice and Dubrovnik. Some simple steps to improve the situation. Overtourism is a little like the climate crisis. Everyone can see it happening (unless you are the Trumpster). Everyone can see it is getting worse and knows it will eventually kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. And nobody in authority is doing anything about it. And with so many people feeling comfortable and making money from it, there is little appetite for change from those in the tourism business because the money…
