Remember the World Cup? Google Trends on How Croatia Took Advantage (Not)

July 7, 2019 - A year after Croatia's incredible success at the World Cup in Russia, Google Trends reports on how the Kingdom of Accidental Tourism took advantage of this free gift.  It was a unique moment in time, and arguably the most joyous in the history of Croatia. And even though this Englishman felt the pain of semi-final defeat, one could not but wish this plucky and tiny nation which dared to dream all the best.   (Photo credit Slobodan Kadic) As incredible as the heroics on the pitch were, it was also the warmth and passion of their travelling…

Environmentally Sustainable Hotels: A Look at Falkensteiner Punta Skala near Zadar

July 7, 2019 - How do big resorts minimise the inevitable environmental projects that tourism brings? A look at the approach from Falkensteiner Punta Skala, a little north of Zadar.  One of the most intriguing tours I have seen on my rounds along the Croatian coast this summer was during a stay at Falkensteiner Iadera in Petrcane, near Zadar.   The resort, the largest successful foreign investment on the Croatian coast and opened in 2011, lies on an idyllic peninsula free of neighbours in around 15 hectares of land. That sense of space and greenery and immersion in nature is one…

One Man and His Dog: Outdoors Croatia Explores St. Ilija on Peljesac (VIDEO)

July 7, 2019 - Looking to escape the crowds and explore the Great Outdoors? The one man and dog team from Outdoors Croatia have the answer on Peljesac.  If you are an active outdoor person looking for a place to research what Croatia has to offer, there is only one recommendation I would make - the YouTube channel of Outdoors Croatia, which has done more to highlight the potential of Croatia as an active tourism destination than any other I have come across. And rather than focusing just on the popular spots, the one man and one dog team have…

Forget the Costly Coastline, Head to Slavonia for an Affordable Croatian Holiday

While tourists flock to Croatia’s coastal destinations, opt for the booming capital, or bake in the sun at its national parks, there’s another lesser-known area in the country that isn’t on the edge of overtourism - Slavonia.  Among all the developed destinations is Croatia’s east and Slavonia, though not even many Croatian citizens know about the varied tourism offer they can find here.  “I was born in Zagreb and grew up there, so I was surprised at how many tourist attractions the Vukovar-Srijem County actually offers to its visitors. I do not think anyone will regret coming for a holiday…

Hungarians Coming to Croatia to Get Boat Skipper License

We can see how vacation habits are changing for many foreign tourists, and more and more of them want to rent boats and enjoy the nautical tourism in Croatia. But to be able to do that, they need to have an international boat skipper license, category B, which gives them permission to manage boats with over 15kW of power. Without such license, it's impossible to legally rent a boat in Croatia (and even illegal rent often includes the question "Do you have the license?"), so it's no wonder many foreign tourists want to obtain it before their vacation. And many…

Tuhelj to Get First Five Star Camp in Continental Croatia

Continental Croatia is becoming increasingly popular with foreign tourists who are realising that Croatia has far, far more to offer to the world than just the coast. With that, Terme Tuhelj, a popular continental Croatian destination in Krapina-Zagorje County for both domestic and foreign guests, is upping its game. As Marija Crnjak/Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 5th of July, 2019, at the end of July in Terme Tuhelj in Tuheljske Toplice the very first five-star camp located in continental Croatia is set to open its doors, this marks the result of a large investment of its Slovenian owner, and is…

Split Airport Fails to Open New Terminal On Time

On June 14, 2019, TCN reported that Split Airport's new passenger terminal was set to open on schedule, and in approximately two weeks, though the exact date was still unknown. Technical checks were said to be currently underway at the site, after which the Croatian Ministry for Construction and Spatial Planning would issue an operating permit.  However, on July 5, 2019, we still don’t have an answer. Namely, Ex Yu Aviation reports that Split Airport missed the deadline for opening the new passenger terminal, as the Airport announced it would be open to travelers by the end of June. A…
