Dubrovnik First in the World to Use Smart Parking

While Dubrovnik is often said to be unique and very special, it doesn't happen often that it can be said that it's the first and the best at something in the world. However, the first and the biggest project of smart parking in the world has been being implemented in Dubrovnik over the last several months. Based on the newest generation of sensor networks and other necessary technologies, it covers most parking spots in Dubrovnik, Leona Rašica writes for dulist.hr. Tomislav Tabak, the director of the Sanitat, Dubrovnik's utility services company, explains that the smart parking project has managed to…

Over-Tourism? Meet the Chilled, Historic Ancient Town of Stari Grad on Hvar

June 26, 2019 - As tourists fill up the roads, beaches and bars in the summer heat, meet one ancient and relaxed island destination with its own cooling system, where time stands still.  It is a strange feeling walking around a tourist island where you used to live, looking at towns and villages where you used to know every shop and bar but have not visited for years. Especially in the searing heat of 30 C - far too hot for this pink Englishman. The thought of heading to Stari Grad on Hvar in the midday sun for some meetings…

BBC Travel Features Pag, Croatia's Wild Cheese Island

June 26, 2019 - BBC Travel discovers one of the culinary secrets of one of Europe's most unusual islands - Pag.  It is not often that Croatia is featured on the BBC homepage - unless we are talking about World Cup sporting success, of course.  And how nice to see today's feature focusing on one of Croatia's most fascinating island's - Pag.  Home to the strongest winds on the coast, the finest lamb in all Croatia, an olive grove with more than 1,000 trees each over a thousand years old, its own UFO landing site, the party - and salt…

Chefs on Sea 2019: 10 Croatian JRE Restaurants Not to Miss on Saturday

A culinary extravaganza on June 27, 2019, as the JRE Chefs on Sea initiative returns to Croatia for the second year, bringing together talented Croatian and international chefs in some of Croatia's top restaurants. It is seven years since the late, great Anthony Bourdain discovered Croatia and its cuisine. He was blown away by what he called the 'world-class food, world-class wine, world-class food.' I remember watching his No Reservations programme on The Travel Channel back in 2012 and commenting that this was the finest tourism promotion of Croatia I had ever seen.
It still is.  Croatian cuisine is…

Bakar, Unassuming Croatian Town Full of Impressive Achievements

Bakar, a small town in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County isn't on everyone's ''must visit'' list. Far from sharing the exposure of much more popular, larger Croatian destinations like Dubrovnik or Split, or even Zagreb, Bakar has an industrial past and was late to the tourism game, therefore it usually isn't on the radars of keen foreign visitors, even if they're already visiting other areas in the increasingly popular Kvarner region. Despite its issues when it comes to succeeding as a tourist destination, the pretty town of Bakar has more stories to tell than one might first expect. As Morski/Silvia Jacic writes on…

Šibenik's Banj Beach Listed Among Top Nine Beaches in World!

June the 24th, 2019 - Šibenik is a truly beautiful, historic Dalmatian town which is becoming increasingly popular among foreign tourists from all over the world. Without the incredible amount of publicity other Croatian cities like Split and Dubrovnik, Šibenik has managed to find its own way and has done so extremely successfully. Caring for its local population much more than the likes of Dubrovnik has ever done, not to mention its numerous UNESCO protected sites, this stunning Dalmatian city has a range of achievements under its belt when it comes to sustainable tourism and refusing to alienate the locals.  Often…

Croatia's Most Vibrant 2019 Rental? Meet Hvar Art House

June 24, 2019 - We live in the Instagram age. If you are looking for a holiday rental to remember, can you beat Hvar Art House? Full disclosure - the owner of Hvar Art House is a friend of mine.  He is also a little nuts. Just how nuts I was about to learn some time ago when he told me about his idea to add a little fizz to his rental property in Hvar Town.  The idea of Hvar Art House sounded a little bizarre as he explained it over a beer.  I saw some of the initial artwork…

First International Pelinkovac Festival to Take Place in Stari Grad, Hvar

Stari Grad on Hvar hosts the first ever international festival of the iconic Pelinkovac on June 27, 2019. One thing I have learned in my 17 years in Croatia is that if it grows, Croatians will make a festival out of it. During my time here, the culinary delights have included trying the edible dormouse (delicious) in Dol on Hvar, lavender ice cream (interesting) in Velo Grablje on Hvar, bean ice cream (let's not go there) in Kastela, and pumpkin beer (rather good) in Ivanic Grad. For an overview of the weird and wonderful food festivals in Croatia, check out…

June 24, 2019 - A new summer timetable has been announced for travelers on the Split-Supetar Jadrolinija ferry line this summer. The first weekend of summer in Split brought some 112,000 travelers through the airport and ferry port, making it no surprise that we are well and truly into the season - and we have hit the ground running.  Jelena Ivuljić from Jadrolinija said that from Friday to Sunday, around 65,000 passengers and about 12,000 vehicles traveled through the Split Ferry Port, and the most significant interest among travelers is Brač and Hvar. “We have 12 regular lines for Brač,…
