November 4, 2020 - The three largest Croatian airports, Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik, released their monthly statistics for October. All airports recorded a decrease in the number of passengers compared to September.
Croatian Aviation reports that the drop in passenger numbers in October was actually expected for several reasons. First, we traditionally have fewer seasonal lines in October, especially in Split and Dubrovnik. This year, due to the pandemic's impact, several lines stopped operating in late September, a month earlier than usual in previous years.
Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik combined did not reach 100,000 passengers in October
In addition to the earlier cancellation of routes, aircraft operating to and from the three mentioned airports had low passenger cabin occupancy. In addition to the pandemic itself and the crisis it causes, there is the fear of traveling by plane due to frequent flight cancellations and uncertainty about frequent changes in rules at state borders. All of the above resulted in record low numbers - the three largest Croatian airports in October together did not have even 100 thousand passengers (specifically, there were 95,432)!
Zagreb Airport in October this year recorded 55,289 passengers, by far the most of all Croatian airports. Still, there is a noticeable decrease in the number of passengers than in September (more than 10 thousand fewer passengers than the previous month).
In October 2019, Zagreb registered 330,598 passengers. In total, from January 1 to October 31, 840,610 passengers passed through the main Croatian airport (2,957,109 in the same period last year). Thus, it is clear that Zagreb Airport will not reach the millionth passenger this year. From January to October, Zagreb recorded a drop in passenger traffic of over 71% compared to the same period last year.
Split Airport recorded 25,796 passengers in October, while in October 2019, 247,172 passengers passed through this airport. Split lost its chance for the millionth passenger a long time ago; by the end of October, only 657,570 passengers passed through Split Airport, which is actually an excellent result considering that there was almost no significant traffic by May. Hence, most passengers passed through Split at the height of the season. Namely, from June to October, Split generated over 600 thousand passengers!
This airport had more passengers from January to October last year than Zagreb - over 3 million (3,214,702).
Dubrovnik was far from famous this year in air traffic, and October was another modest month. Only 14,347 passengers passed through Dubrovnik Airport, while in the same month last year, there were almost 300,000 passengers (299,532).
At Dubrovnik Airport, slightly better traffic monthly was achieved only in August (almost 120 thousand passengers).
From January to October, 321,296 passengers passed through this airport, while last year in the same period - 2,804,478.
One thing is for sure, the decline in the number of passengers will continue in the last two months of this year, but the problem is that the market recovery is not in sight, almost certainly not until the spring of next year. Detailed statistics of other Croatian airports (Pula, Rijeka, Zadar, and Osijek) will be published soon.

October 22, 2020 - 'Underwater Muse,' the underwater archeological project of the Resnik Split Airport area, known as 'Siculi,' was presented in the 15th-century Vitturi castle in Kaštel Lukšić.
Dalmatinski Portal reports that the project, which is financed from EU funds and cross-border cooperation with Italy, was presented by the city administration, the Public Institution RERA, and the Museum of the City of Kaštela, who explained what has been done and how soon visitors to the Vitturi castle will be able to enjoy a virtual walk through the sites.
Mayor Denis Ivanović stated that Kaštela has a rich cultural heritage and history that is quite unexplored, and EU funds are an opportunity to explore and get to know the entire history.
"The ultimate goal is to bring everything we have hidden to light," he concluded pictorially.
Veljko Martinović
Project manager Marjan Dumanić, on behalf of RERA, added that the Resnik submarine site would be explored. An attempt will be made to protect and transform it into use in an economically acceptable way.
"In addition to presenting the findings of archaeological research, we will use all our knowledge to form a 3D model that we will soon be able to see in the Kaštela City Museum," announced Dumanić.
The director of the Kaštela City Museum, Ivan Šuta, revealed what they found through archeological research.
"We have found remains that date back to 6000 BC, i.e., older than the Neolithic period. With this research, we have contributed to the knowledge of the older Neolithic period when they first had permanent settlements; they began to engage in agriculture at a depth of three meters. We were also looking for the remains of a Roman port, or rather of late antiquity," he said.
Veljko Martinović
He claimed that they had been given enough data to make a virtual reconstruction so that visitors to Vitturi Castle could walk through the three permanent sites.
Mate Parica from the Department of Archeology, University of Zadar concretized part of the findings.
"We discovered an ancient port, on the one hand, ceramics, processed stone and the like from archeological materials, and on the other hand, we worked on a prehistoric site, which contained floor plans of older buildings. There we found several flint artifacts, knives, scrapers, and the like," Parica described.

October 14, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Wizz Air will not operate to Split Airport this winter.
Croatian Aviation reports that this summer, Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air introduced a new route to Croatia from Dortmund to Split, which was originally scheduled to operate in the winter flight schedule this year. However, that will no longer happen.
The Split - Dortmund line started operating on August 1 this year, after Wizz Air opened its new base in this German city. Flights to Split operated three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Wizz Air, however, decided to operate on this route only in the summer flight schedule, which is not strange given the current global pandemic and reduced demand. Split is no exception, and the company will not operate this winter to airports in the region where there are significantly more flights, such as Skopje, Tuzla, Belgrade, and a number of other destinations.
Split Airport is the only destination of this well-known low-cost airline in the Republic of Croatia. Recall, Wizz Air operates on four international routes to Split in the summer; from Warsaw, Katowice, London and Dortmund.
Wizz Air used to operate to Osijek Airport (on the Basel - Osijek route), but this line was canceled even before the outbreak of the global coronavirus pandemic.
The company has not yet announced the summer flight schedule for next year, so it remains to be seen whether Wizz Air will introduce new routes to Croatian destinations in the summer of 2021. This airline, as Croatian Aviation unofficially found out, is interested in introducing routes to Zagreb Airport.
Recall, as we announced on Tuesday, Eurowings will therefore operate in the winter flight schedule to Split and Zagreb from three German airports: Cologne, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart. You can read more about these lines HERE.

September 10, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Condor ends traffic to Split Airport.
Croatian Aviation reports that Condor, a German leisure airline, will finish operating in September to its only destination in Croatia this summer season - Split Airport. The Frankfurt-Split route has two flights announced in October, but the probability of their realization is quite small.
On June 12, the company launched traffic to Split with three international routes, from Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Hanover, available with two flights a week.
Before the outbreak of the pandemic, this leisure airline regularly flew from German airports to Rijeka, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik, but in this year's summer flight schedule, Condor flew only to Split Airport.
The company made its last flight on the Hannover - Split route on Sunday, August 30, and it is no longer on offer in this year's summer flight schedule.
The Split - Dusseldorf route operated twice a week, on Fridays and Sundays, and the last flight on this route was announced for Sunday, September 13.
In June, Condor first launched the Split-Frankfurt route, which is currently announced throughout September. The company offers direct flights on this route every Friday and Sunday, until September 27. A320 aircraft were used on all routes to Croatia, while the Frankfurt-Split route was an exception, and occasionally used larger aircraft (A321, B757).
On the route from Frankfurt, the company also has two direct flights on sale in October (October 11 and October 25), but the probability that these flights will be canceled is high.
Condor has announced its preliminary flight schedule for next summer’s season and it has announced the three mentioned routes to Split Airport. No resumption of traffic to other airports in Croatia has been announced yet.

September 7, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Wizz Air stops traffic on three lines to Split, and British Airways makes its last rotation to Zagreb and Pula from Heathrow.
Croatian Aviation reports that Hungarian Wizz Air has made some changes in its flight schedule for September as there will be a disruption of traffic on three routes to Split Airport.
This well-known low-cost company operates only to Split Airport, seasonally, in the summer flight schedule. Despite the pandemic, Wizz Air resumed traffic from Split to four destinations, one more than the previous year. This year, the company introduced a completely new line - Dortmund - Split.
In addition to Dortmund, Wizz Air offers direct flights from Split to London (Luton Airport), Warsaw, and Katowice. These three lines will stop operating this month.
The Split - Warsaw line is currently operating three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The last flight on this line has been announced for Saturday, September 19.
The Split - Katowice line also operates three times a week, on the same days as the line from Warsaw, and the last flight is announced for Saturday, September 19.
The Split - London Luton line operates twice a week, every Monday and Friday. This line will be in traffic for slightly longer. The last flight will be on Monday, September 28.
A completely new route, Split - Dortmund, is announced as a year-round line, and Wizz Air offers flights through the entire winter flight schedule three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Regular traffic in the winter months will depend on demand and restrictive measures.
Furthermore, British Airways made its last rotation on the London Heathrow - Zagreb - London Heathrow yesterday and finished traffic to Pula Airport.
As was announced on August 25, British Airways decided to stop traffic on three of its four routes from London (Heathrow Airport) to Croatia.
The London Heathrow - Pula line has been in operation since August 1 with two flights a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays). British Airways planned to keep this route active throughout September, but the reintroduction of restrictions by the UK on passengers from Croatia forced the company to suspend traffic earlier. On Saturday, September 5, the last flight was made after only a month of regular operations, with a nine-year-old A320 aircraft (reg. Marked G-EUYL). British Airways plans to return to Pula in the spring of next year.
The London Heathrow - Zagreb line operated 3 times a week in July and 5 times a week in August. The company completely suspended sales on this line three weeks ago, and as of Monday, September 7, there are no more direct flights.
British Airways has been offering flights on the London - Zagreb route from October 1, with as many as 11 flights available per week. The fact is that this is a British Airways flight schedule planned even before the outbreak of the pandemic, and the company has not considered those flights so far. Operational changes (cancellations) for flights from October 1 can be expected in mid-September, and, certainly, this company will not fly 11 times a week to Zagreb.
If British Airways decided to stop traffic on this line now, in early September, there will likely be no flights either in October or in the other winter months. On the flight from Zagreb, there were 113 passengers (LF 70%).
Croatia Airlines also operates on the London-Zagreb route, which reduced the number of flights in September.
The London Heathrow - Split line will remain in service until September 26.

Septemeber 5, 2020 - The latest news for flights to Croatia as Eurowings reduces flights to Split Airport.
Croatian Aviation reports that due to the introduction of restrictive measures that apply to all who travel to Germany from Split-Dalmatia, Sibenik-Knin, and Zadar counties (mandatory testing for COVID-19 and self-isolation until the test results are presented), Eurowings has recorded a decline in demand resulting in numerous cancellations on lines to Split Airport.
In mid-August, Eurowings announced its flight schedule to Croatia for September, in which it announced an increase in the number of weekly flights from a number of German cities compared to August.
Due to restrictive measures and the epidemiological situation in Croatia, Eurowings, just like everyone else, is recording a decline in demand on routes to Split, which results in the cancellation of certain departures and a new, reduced flight schedule for September this year. Eurowings was supposed to run 40 operations a week to Split Airport this month, but that will not happen.
You can find the new flight schedule below:
Split - Dusseldorf will operate 3 times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from September 26 (previously planned 4 flights a week, the flight is canceled on Sundays),
Split - Hamburg will operate twice a week, on Mondays and Sundays, from September 7 (previously planned 4 flights a week, flights are canceled on Tuesdays and Saturdays),
Split - Cologne will operate twice a week, on Thursdays and Saturdays, from September 7 (previously planned 5 flights a week, the flight will be canceled on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays). Eurowings had two daily flights on this line on Saturdays, leaving one in traffic.
Split - Stuttgart will operate 3 times a week, on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from September 7 (previously planned 4 flights a week, the flight is canceled on Sundays),
Split - Hannover continues to operate according to the original plan, once a week, on Saturdays,
Split - Berlin continues to operate according to the original plan, twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Eurowings will have 26 weekly operations to Split in September - as many as 14 flights a week less than originally planned.
In other Croatian airports, there are currently no reductions on Eurowings routes, and traffic is moving according to the flight schedule that was announced earlier. Further cancellations are possible and will depend on restrictions for travelers traveling to Germany from Croatia.

August 29, 2020 - During the last weekend in August, the number of passengers at Split Airport decreased significantly, and on Saturday and Sunday, 150 planes should land at Resnik, bringing 20,000 passengers.
Mate Melvan from Split Airport says that in August, the traffic will be at the level of 40% from the same month last year, but that, given the situation around the coronavirus and the measures taken by individual countries, they are extremely satisfied with the results, reports Dalmatinski Portal.
"We expect to be at 550,000 passengers in the first eight months of this year, which are excellent results when we take into account that we had 30,000 passengers in April, May, and June," said Melvan.
As for the forecast for September, some carriers have already canceled the planned flights, and 30 carriers from 50 destinations should fly to Split.
"It is very difficult to predict what will happen in September due to the measures adopted by the Civil Protection Headquarters. However, we can say that we have a large number of flights in the announcement, but it all depends on how much the recommendations of other countries to come to Croatia will affect the decision of passengers to decide to travel," added Melvan.
That this year's season is slowly coming to an end can also be seen at the Split Ferry Port. This is the first weekend in which there are no extra lines to the islands, and it is expected that about 40,000 passengers and 10,000 vehicles will pass through the ferry port this weekend.

August 27, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates for Split.
Croatian Aviation reports that this summer, Aer Lingus launched only one direct line to Croatia, while before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, four were announced.
The company introduced the Dublin - Split line only on July 20 this year, at the same time canceling the lines from Dublin to Pula and Dubrovnik, as well as the Cork - Dubrovnik line for this summer season.
Aer Lingus aircraft operated three times a week on a direct route to Split (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), but currently, the number of weekly flights has been reduced and flights on Wednesdays are excluded from the schedule. The company will continue to operate between Split and Dublin twice a week (Mondays and Fridays) until September 11, after which Aer Lingus will conclude this summer season and traffic to Croatia.
Direct flights of other airlines
Travelers still have several options for direct travel between Ireland and Croatia. The well-known low-cost airline, Ryanair, will operate throughout September on two routes from Dublin to Croatia:
Dublin - Split line continues to operate twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays,
Dublin - Dubrovnik line continues to operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays.
The Croatian national airline will also continue to operate on the route Zagreb - Dublin, three flights a week have been announced, every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, with an A319 aircraft with a capacity of 144 seats.
This news comes one day after popular low-cost airline easyJet announced it would not operate on 20 international routes to four Croatian airports in September. The company will thus suspend certain lines earlier than planned, solely due to weak demand.

August 23, 2020 - A total of 83,000 passengers will pass through Split's Ferry Port and Resnik Airport this weekend, while the total number of passengers who arrived at Split Airport will reach more than half a million passengers since the beginning of the year.
Slobodna Dalmacija reports that Jelena Ivulic from Jadrolinija said that 55,000 passengers and 13,500 vehicles in both directions would pass through their ferry port on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
"There are more people leaving the island this weekend than coming. However, despite the fact that the season is somewhat slowing down, there is still great interest in Brac, which is why an extra ferry line will sail across Supetar this morning," she added.
No less active is the Split Resnik Airport, where 150 aircraft will land and take off this weekend, taking 28,000 passengers. Among them are about 20 private planes.
"August this year is at 40 percent of last year's traffic, and we expect that we will have 250 thousand passengers by the end of the month. It is interesting that in the first seven months of this year, we had 277 thousand passengers, and only in August, 250 thousand passengers. Thus, the total number of passengers since the beginning of the year is more than half a million passengers. Indeed, August has lifted our declining traffic," said Mate Melvan of Split Airport.

August 7, 2020 - The latest news from around Croatia’s airports for flights to Croatia with updates from Split and Dubrovnik.
Croatian Aviation reports that Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) announced its flight schedule for August in which it will significantly reduce the number of weekly flights to Split Airport.
This well-known Scandinavian airline launched traffic at the end of June to Split Airport from three destinations: Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo. Lines from Stockholm and Copenhagen to Split operated daily (mainly A320 aircraft), while the Oslo - Split route operated 5 to 6 times a week.
But that will change from mid-August. Namely, from August 15, the Copenhagen - Split line will operate only once a week, every Saturday, and the same will be the case with the Stockholm - Split line, which will also operate once a week (Saturday).
The Oslo - Split line will operate three times a week (Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) from 9 August, and from August 15, this line will also run once a week (Saturdays).
The second destination in Croatia for SAS this summer was Pula Airport, where the company operated regularly once a week on the line from Copenhagen (Saturdays). Tickets are on sale for flights until August 15, after which, it is likely, the line will end with traffic for this summer season.
Brussels Airlines has announced its flight schedule for August, in which lines from Brussels to Split and Dubrovnik will continue to operate this month.
As announced earlier, Brussels Airlines launched traffic on the route to Dubrovnik on June 27 this year and operates twice a week, every Tuesday and Saturday with A319 and A320 aircraft.
The line will continue to operate through August, but from August 22, only once a week. Namely, the flight is canceled on Tuesdays and only the flight on Saturdays, A320 aircraft, remain in traffic. Brussels Airlines is holding flights to Dubrovnik until October 10, but we will monitor the situation and announce any changes.
The second Brussels line in Croatia, to Split, operates once a week (also on Saturdays), which will continue until mid-September (September 19). After the mentioned date, the company no longer offers direct flights on the Brussels - Split route.
We remind you that before the corona pandemic, this airline planned flights to Zadar and Zagreb, but those routes were completely canceled. Croatia Airlines operates on a direct route between Zagreb and Brussels.
