Large Proportion of Youth Clueless About Croatian Employment Measures

The World Youth Federation of Croatia points out that the population under the age of 29 should be informed more and in a better way about opportunities available to them, such as Croatian employment measures.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Lucija Spiljak writes on the 2nd of March, 2020, as many as 48 percent of young people in Croatia are either entirely unfamiliar or poorly informed about Croatian employment measures, and 64.2 percent are unfamiliar with self-employment measures implemented by the Ministry of Labour and the Croatian Employment Service.

These are the results of a survey conducted by the World Youth Federation of Croatia (SSMH) as part of the Kompas Project - Directing the Future in Your Community. In addition to the results, they presented a proposal for measures for the Strategy on Employment and Self-Employment of Young People of the Republic of Croatia, which was composed by 150 young participants from seven counties.

The most negative results are, of course, in Slavonia...

The Alliance's brochure points out that Croatia, with 35.5 percent of young people aged 15-29 employed, is ranked fourth from the bottom of European Union (EU) rankings. For the last four years, SSMH has been addressing the issue of young people remaining here in Croatia, starting with the Collaboration Against Apathy - Opposition project, co-funded by the Erasmus + program, which, back in 2017, brought together more than 250 young people in four cities. They discussed the problems they face in society and the potential solutions and measures for the National Youth Programme.

150 young people from seven Croatian counties drafted a proposal for measures for the Youth Employment and Self-Employment Strategy in Croatia.

At the time, research was conducted on the needs of young people, with a focus on the local community, and the results show that unemployment is one of the biggest challenges and problems in Croatia. The need to find adequate solutions and methods for reducing youth unemployment has brought about the Kompas project. Project manager Lucija Kundid points out that statistics show a decrease in unemployment compared to last year, but believes that this is only true if young people leaving Croatia are taken into account.

Through the Kompas project, she says, they have explored young people's views on employment and self-employment to examine their awareness of incentives, Croatian employment measures and policies and their use in rural and urban areas, and their implementation and general level of efficiency at the local level.

''The survey results showed that almost half of the respondents were either entirely unaware or poorly uninformed about Croatian employment measures, and as many as 64.2 percent were unfamiliar with self-employment measures. This shows that they are not adequately or properly presented to young people. On the other hand, the survey showed that very few employees actually used these measures when getting a job. Young people from Slavonia have the most negative attitude towards its implementation, and the most positive attitudes come from the City of Zagreb and Central Croatia, which is expected given the number of young people emigrating from Slavonia every year, but also because a large number of young people from all parts of Croatia pick up and move their lives to Zagreb,'' says the project manager.

Kundid: Statistics show a decrease in youth unemployment, but this is an illusion as many people are leaving the Republic of Croatia.

As a result, within the Kompas project, conferences were held in seven counties - Lika-Senj, Split-Dalmatia, Dubrovnik-Neretva, Karlovac, Bjelovar-Bilogora, Brod-Posavina and the City of Zagreb to introduce young people to active employment policy measures in Croatia and empowering young people to participate in the drafting of proposals for the adoption of the Youth Employment and Self-Employment Strategy.

“We had the greatest interest of young people to participate in the project from Brod-Posavina County, where representatives of the local government and CES were present. In Zagreb, they were accompanied by ministry representatives, which we commend. But in Lika-Senj, there was nobody, which is also a kind of message,'' Kundid said.

64.2 percent of young people in the survey admitted that they were not aware of the CES self-employment measures and what the Ministry of Labour is doing.

''With regard to youth misinformation, it's very important to promote Croatian employment measures at the municipal, city and county levels and to strengthen the cooperation of CES information centres, career counselling centres and educational institutions. The compulsory education of high school students on employment, especially for high school graduates, is important,'' said Jure Mihael Slavic, president of the City of Split's Youth Council.

Korean Air First Airline to Cancel Flights to Zagreb Due to Coronavirus

March 2, 2020 - Due to the fear of coronavirus, Korean Air is the first airline to cancel flights to Zagreb.

Namely, Index.hr reports that Korean Air has canceled its Seoul-Zagreb route. These flights were scheduled to begin on March 31, 2020, but were canceled by South Korea's national carrier Korean Air due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Their website lists the lines that have been canceled by each region of the world. Thus, several flights have been canceled for Europe, with some flying less frequently than before.

The line to Zagreb was canceled, according to current information, until April 23, 2020.

Recall that since the onset of the coronavirus epidemic, numerous flights of various airlines to many destinations have been canceled. The first airline to cancel its flights to Wuhan and parts of China was British Airways, which called for the safety of its staff and said it did not want to jeopardize them.

Some of the other companies, in turn, have said they are reducing the number of flights due to reduced demand.

In addition, South Korea, of which Korean Air is from, has the highest number of coronavirus infected after China with more than 4,000 cases.

ZAGREB, March 2, 2020 - AD Plastik, the Croatian Air Traffic Control, and Lidl Croatia have won the Deloitte Green Frog awards for the best sustainability report, progress in reporting, and originality in reporting in 2019, Deloitte Croatia announced.

The AD Plastik Group won the Green Frog Award 2019, awarded by Deloitte Croatia for the best sustainability report, and this year the Croatian Employers Association (HUP) and Global Compact Network Croatia joined the jury as full members.

The award for progress in reporting was also presented, and it was won by the Croatian Air Traffic Control. Also, the award for originality in reporting was given for the first time, and it was won by Lidl Croatia.

The awards ceremony was held at the "Employment with impact" conference, organised by Deloitte, HUP, and Global Compact Network Croatia.

The Deloitte audit director and head of the Green Frog Initiative Ivana Turjak Čebohin pointed out that the social accountability, environmental and human rights awareness was increasing.

"These trends on the contemporary market have caused positive changes in Croatia, and the number of companies publishing non-financial reports is growing every year. Non-financial reporting is beneficial both to those companies which are legally obliged to do it, and to those who are not," emphasised Čebohin.

The advisor for sustainable development and socially responsible business in HUP and Global Compact Network Croatia Executive Director Vali Marszalek said that companies were becoming more aware of the fact that, in order to maximise benefits and create long-term value for their business, they had to take into account not only shareholders' expectations, but also the expectations of suppliers, employees, buyers, consumers, and local communities.

"The subject of this year's conference, the employment of disabled persons, is extremely important for the business sector, especially as we are talking about the enormous potential of billions of people across the globe who, due to their circumstances, have to develop skills such as persistence, problem solving, innovative thinking, and readiness to experiment in order to adapt to the world around them," emphasised Marszalek.

On behalf of the AD Plastik Group, the award was accepted by the chair of the board for socially responsible business, Zoja Crnecki, who said that socially responsible business was a part of the company's business model and one of the most important components of its development policy.

Croatia Prepared for Possible Migrant Wave

ZAGREB, March 2, 2020 - The head of the national civil protection authority, Damir Trut, said on Sunday the border police were prepared for a possible migrant wave after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan allowed migrants to head for the European Union.

Trut was commenting for the press on Erdogan's opening of Turkey's borders for migrants to cross into Europe and its possible impact on the spread of coronavirus in Croatia.

"The border police have plans for all activities and are prepared. Not one situation can take them by surprise. All the recommendations the Croatian Public Health Institute (HZJZ) made concerning border crossing and border checks are being respected," Trut said.

HZJZ head Krunoslav Capak recalled the 2015 migrant crisis, saying that after several thousand migrants had entered Croatia, "the migrant wave was put under control."

"We then prepared epidemiological instructions for all the key care providers for migrants," he added.

In a statement carried by the public broadcaster, Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic said EU interior ministers would likely meet next week.

Earlier today, European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, the chief European official in charge of the migration issue, asked Croatia to convene an urgent meeting of EU interior ministers after Turkey said it had allowed over 75,000 migrants to cross its border and head for the EU.

About 6,500 border police are deployed along our border and we don't expect the migrants will enter Croatia, said Capak. Croatia will be prepared if that happens, he added.

Erdogan has said he let the migrants out of Turkey after dozens of his soldiers were killed in air strikes in northern Syria.

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency said today it was sending reinforcements to the Greek-Turkish border and that it was on high alert.

Boris Milosic Breaks Guinness World Record for Walking Underwater!

March 2, 2020 - On Sunday, Boris Milosic, a member of the Split Diving Club, broke the world record for walking underwater at the Marina Kastela pool!

Namely, Boris is the first man to walk 100 meters underwater and thus enter the Guinness Book of Records, while he also set a world record for diving a year ago in Serbia.

Before the competition, Dalmacija Danas asked Boris how he felt.

“I am very excited, today I will try to set the world record currently held by a Turkish diver, which is 80 meters. Physically all this is not difficult, I need to focus more mentally on what I do. I have to go to my zen zone.

Is it harder to dive or walk underwater?

“It's harder to walk than to dive because you carry more resistance. One leg must always be at the bottom and the whole body must be underwater.”

Why did Boris choose diving?

“I was born in Austria and at the age of 18, moved to Split. My parents had a weekend house in Rogoznica and we spent every summer there, so I fell in love with the sea at the age of 7. And from then on, I somehow decided that I was going to start diving,” said Boris, who then took a few minutes for mental preparation and set out to break the world record.

After breaking the world record, Boris was visibly thrilled:

"I thank everyone who supported me, my family, my coach, and my sponsors. I'm so excited,” he said.

Boris Milosic is a 23-year member of the Split Diving Club. He was first in the public eye exactly a year ago, when he set a world record for diving in the Bi-Fin discipline in Serbia.

TCN wrote about Boris’ venture on Saturday.

“The rule is that the body must be completely underwater and you must walk in the pool for as long as possible. One foot always has to touch the floor, and when walking, I have to watch the buoyancy of the body. Currently, the record is 79 meters, and I intend to become the first person to walk 100 meters underwater,” Boris Milosic said about making history on Sunday.

“Breathing is a mentally demanding sport. This is a pretty difficult discipline. There are dynamic disciplines where you are moving and static disciplines where you are not. This is something in between,” Boris added.

He will try to complete the venture in less than four minutes.

“I don't think a person who is not into diving can cross half a pool. I'll try to make it in less than four minutes, and if I enjoy it too much, it might be over four minutes - it will be ambitious for us.”
