Beaches on Hvar

Beach of the Week: 11. Palmižana

By paul 18 June 2012

With established tourism there for more than 100 years, the Paradise that is Palmizana is no longer a secret, but it is still gorgeous.

There are many stunning bays on the Pakleni Islands which can be accessed by water taxi, and Palmizana is probably the most famous, and certainly the most developed in terms of tourism. The Meneghellos opened their doors to tourists way back in 1906, five years before the first hotel in Jelsa was built.

It is divine.

Palmizana is much more than just a beach, however - it is a perfect day out with lots to see and do. There are four high quality restaurants on the water, all offering a different ambiance, from the natural setting under giant olive trees at Bacchus and the exclusiveness of Zori to the most interesting place on the island for me - Meneghello. Apart from the two restaurants, it is also an art gallery and shop, with a lively cultural programme, as well as a wonderful botanical garden, with plenty of accommodation if you feel like basing yourself here for a holiday.

Feel like a cocktail or two? Head to Laganini on the water next to Bacchus, and relax with a Mojito or two on the beach. Palmizana is also the main ACI marina in the area, of course, with its deep sheltered bay on the other side of the island, a short walk through wonderful nature to the restaurants and beach. Even if you plan a beach day, take some time to stroll through the wonderful nature of the island of Sveti Klement - dare I say it, it is even more stunning than Hvar. Many thanks once again to Hvar map and accommodation specialists Visit Hvar for the excellent photos. Check out their site for the best interactive map of the island.
