“Tereza37” Selected As Croatia’s Oscar Entry
ZAGREB, 10 Oct, 2021 - The Filmmakers Association of Croatia has selected Danilo Šerbedžija's "Tereza37" as Croatia's entry for the 2022 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
Šerbedžija's film was chosen among seven.
This is the third time that one of his films has been selected for the Oscars' Best International Feature Film. He represented Croatia with "72 Days" and Macedonia with "The Liberation of Skopje", which he co-directed with his father, actor Rade Šerbedžija.
"Tereza37", starring Lana Barić, who also wrote the screenplay, is the story of a 37-year-old woman who can't get pregnant, because of which she feels increasing pressure from her community. She starts examining her life up to then, her marriage and family relationships, which results in many unexpected events.

Research Debunks Stereotype of Balkans As Violent Region
ZAGREB, 10 Oct, 2021 - The century-old stereotype that the Balkans is a region of omnipresent violence was recently debunked in a book showing that violence in the Balkans is a little more present than in northern, western and central Europe, but less present than in eastern Europe, America and Asia.
The book by Croatian criminologist Anna-Marie Getoš Kalac, published by Springer, researches homicides in six Balkan countries.
"Violence in the Balkans - First findings from the Balkan Homicide Study" contains empirical data from 2,073 case files in Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Romania and Slovenia, analysing information on 2,416 perpetrators and 2,379 victims.
The book says homicides mostly occur in towns and least in cities, including the capitals of those six countries.
Murders generally occur between intimate partners and family members, while in attempted murders the victim and the perpetrator most often are not family relations.
In the Balkans, as in all of Europe, homicides between total strangers occur in less than 15% of cases, Getoš Kalac, a professor at the Zagreb Faculty of Law, says in her research.
Homicide perpetrators are most frequently men and the victims are mostly other men. As for violence between intimate partners, men are the perpetrators in 15% of cases and women in 39%. Although they are less frequently homicide perpetrators, when they commit it, 72% of them kill men.
As for motive, more violence is premeditated than committed in the heat of the moment and about half the motives remain unclear, followed by violence out of revenge or greed.
Despite easier access to firearms due to the 1990s wars, only 13% of perpetrators use firearms, whereas 62% use cold steel and 21% use no weapon at all, says Getoš Kalac.
She says she could not establish a link between violence and organised crime and that only 1.6% of all perpetrators can be at least somewhat linked to the criminal underworld. The reason is that in those cases the perpetrators are often unknown and are not entered into case files.
In two out of three particularly brutal cases, the victims are women, and in those cases it is rarely established that the perpetrators were mentally unstable or had diminished responsibility. Women make up 28.5% and men 71.5% of victims in less brutal homicides.
The book reveals a picture of homicides that greatly contrasts with popular preconceptions about the Balkans according to which the region is inclined towards violence due to a tradition of robbery and the legacy of weak states, which is ascribed to long foreign rule, Hans-Jörg Albrecht, a leading German criminologist, says in the preface.
The book shows that homicides in the Balkans don't happen in the streets or between strangers, and that they are rarely a consequence of a conflict in the grey economy or of violent retaliation, Albrecht adds.
He says criminological research interests in Europe increasingly focus on some subgroups of victims and perpetrators, and that this could reflect political agendas. As an example, he mentions debates on femicides which call for stricter punishment for murders of women, although a global homicide study by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime shows that four in five victims are men.
Getoš Kalac says that in the Balkans as well as elsewhere in Europe quite a large number of murders remains hidden among natural deaths.

Zlatko Dalić Reveals Changes in Croatia Starting 11 against Slovakia
October 10, 2021 - Zlatko Dalić addressed the press in Osijek on Sunday with captain Luka Modrić. The coach announced how the Croatia starting 11 against Slovakia would look, especially with the absence of Mateo Kovačić.
A crucial 2022 World Cup qualifying match awaits the Croatia national team on Monday at 20:45 at City Garden Stadium in Osijek. Croatia will face Slovakia in the 8th round of qualifications for the World Cup in Qatar. A possible victory would keep them in first place in the group ahead of the last two rounds held in November.
Two days ago, Croatia beat Cyprus 3:0 on the road and thus continued a series of winning results and a game without conceding a goal. Croatia is currently tied with Russia, which plays against Slovenia in Maribor on Monday.
Zlatko Dalić, as well as captain Luka Modrić, appeared before the press in Osijek at 17:00 at the final press conference before the match against Slovakia. Croatia's last training at City Garden is scheduled for 17:30.
"We have to respect Slovakia; they are a top national team and can be tough. It doesn't matter who will play for them; we have to be good," said coach Zlatko Dalić at the beginning.
"Our goal is to win as many points as possible and secure a place in the World Cup. We know how much tomorrow's game means to us, perhaps the most important qualifying match. Russia has a difficult visit to Slovenia. This is a chance for us to get closer to Qatar with the victory," Dalić added.
Dalić announced changes in the defense, despite a good performance in recent games.
"We haven't conceded a goal in six games, but tomorrow is an important exam. As good as we were in Cyprus, it was not a benchmark. Tomorrow is a situation where we must not receive pain. We will make changes in the lineup, but not because someone played badly, but we want even more energy. We will put in a couple of fresh players; some of our players are not standard, so it is difficult to repeat two games in three days. Vida is returning to his position," Dalić explained and praised Osijek player Mile Škorić.
"He deserved the invitation, but the competition is great for him. So we will see; I would like the situation to open up for him," Dalić added.
"I am looking forward to the competition in the national team, players who bring new energy and strength. We have to confirm this to get continuity. Everyone works well, and whoever I play, I will not make a mistake," said the Croatia coach, who added that the atmosphere is good because the results and overall team play are good.
"The result dictates everything; we play well, so the atmosphere is great. What makes us happy is the atmosphere and the result; the atmosphere was not worse at the Euros, but the result was missing."
Mate Kovačić will not play due to yellow cards.
"Pašalić will replace him; he will go to his position. Because he is good in the end, and we miss such a player, he has the best of all players, so there is no dilemma. Pašalić will start," said Dalić and added that Duje Ćaleta-Car will not start from the first minute.

Offseason Flights to Split Airport Continue Thanks to KLM
October 10, 2021 - Offseason flights to Split Airport are running by KLM until the end of October, though the Dutch airline has also announced winter flights around the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Dutch national airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will soon conclude its summer flight schedule and suspend traffic Split and Dubrovnik airports.
Since the beginning of the summer flight schedule, KLM has operated flights between Split and Amsterdam, running up to three times a day on this route during the peak season.
KLM also has several weekly rotations between Amsterdam and Split in October, with two flights a day still available with B737-800 and B737-700 aircraft. However, from October 30, KLM will conclude operations to Split Airport in this year's summer flight schedule and pick up again this winter.
Namely, KLM will not wait until next summer to service Split. Like last winter, the Dutch airline will briefly establish a line between Amsterdam and Split, at a time of greatest demand - around Christmas and New Year.
Eight return flights have been announced between December 23, 2021, and January 2, 2022, one flight more than last winter season. Last year, KLM operated on this line in the same period, using smaller capacity aircraft, type E190, while this winter, aircraft type B737-800 will be used.
During the Christmas and New Year holidays, KLM will offer a total of 2,880 seats between Amsterdam and Split, making it an excellent option for tourists to travel to Split during the holidays, as well as for those who want to travel from Split for holidays abroad.
Flights have been announced on December 23, 24, 26, 27, 30, and 31, and January 1 and 2.
KLM has only resumed traffic to Dubrovnik Airport this summer, so, as expected, there are no announced flights between Amsterdam and Dubrovnik in the upcoming winter flight schedule.
KLM continues to operate twice a day to Zagreb, which is the airline's only year-round route. However, after eight return flights to Split in December and January, this carrier will not return to Split until the end of April next year.

Croatia Match-Worn Jerseys Up for Auction after Slovakia Qualifier
October 10, 2021 - Fans can bid on Croatia match-worn jerseys against Slovakia in an auction for the Vatreno Srce Foundation.

A humanitarian auction will start at www.matchwornshirt.com, where the Croatia national team jerseys from the 2022 World Cup qualifier against Slovakia in Osijek will be on offer, announced HNS.
The tradition continues after the Croatia national football team became the first in the world to donate the jerseys from one competitive match (Croatia - Hungary, Euro 2020 qualifiers) to an online auction for humanitarian purposes, raising more than 30,000 euros for the Vatreno Srce Foundation, and did the same in one big competition (Croatia - Spain, Round of 16 of Euro 2020).
All Croatia national team players who will play against Slovakia will give away their jerseys for this auction, and their starting price will be 89 euros. The Vatreno Srce Foundation was founded and run by Croatia national team members and coaches. Prosecco Days Business Wine Fair to Be Held at Dubrovnik Hotel in Zagreb
October 12, 2021 - The Prosecco Days business wine fair will be held at the Dubrovnik Hotel in the City of Zagreb on October the 14th and 15th, at which twenty Italian Prosecco DOC producers will present their flagship sparkling wine(s).
Some of them - such as Villa Sandi, Bottega and Astoria - are already known here on the Croatian market, but most of the sparkling wines shown will be having their Croatian premiere. The organisers of the event are the Vinoljupci (Wine lovers) Association and the Italian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Italy and the Consortium for the Protection of the Name Prosecco DOC from Treviso.
The aim of this wine meeting is to strengthen existing and create new business links between Prosecco DOC producers and Croatian wine professionals, distributors, retailers and the HoReCa sector. Wine tasting is scheduled for both fair days from 12:00 to 18:00. In addition to the representatives of the profession, the top Prosecco DOC can be enjoyed by all lovers of sparkling wines, since the fair is open to the public.
The fair will begin with an expert lecture entitled "Prosecco DOC - the past, present and future", which will be held by Andrea Perkov, General Director of THGK, and during which the director of the Consortium of Producers Prosecco DOC Mr. Luca Giavi will address the audience, there will also be four professional workshops led by the most famous Croatian wine blogger Nenad Trifunović Vinopija taking place.
On the first day of the fair, a gala dinner called "Prosecco & Diamonds" will be held. 120th Anniversary of Ukrainian Greek Catholics’ Arrival in Croatia Marked
ZAGREB, 10 Oct, 2021 - A service was held in the Greek Catholic Cathedral in Križevci on Sunday on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the arrival of Ukrainian Greek Catholics in Croatia.
Among those attending were representatives of Croatia and Ukraine, Ukrainian Ambassador to Croatia Vasyl Kyrylych, local officials, and priests and pilgrims of Ukrainian Greek Catholic parishes in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"The life and work of Ukrainian Greek Catholics in our area has made a hugely positive and progressive contribution to present-day Croatian society," Križevci Bishop Milan Stipić said.
The first Ukrainians moved to Croatia from western Ukraine at the beginning of the 20th century, when Ukraine, like Croatia, was part of Austria-Hungary. All were Greek Catholics and joined the Križevci Eparchy.

Number of E-citizens System’s Registered Users Doubles During Pandemic – Večernji List
ZAGREB, 10 Oct, 2021 - The e-Citizens system could be called a coronavirus profiteer as it boomed during the pandemic, with more than 1.5 million registered users, Večernji List daily said on Sunday.
Although the appetites of the Central State Office for Digital Society Development, which operates the system, are much bigger, the number of registered citizens is almost twice as high as before the pandemic, the paper said.
The first incentive came from the e-passes introduced in spring 2020, during the first lockdown. They were required for crossing county lines and could be obtained much faster via e-Citizens.
The second motive for registering were the COVID certificates. On 1 June 2021, e-Citizens had 1,288,211 users. Since the moment the certificates could be obtained digitally until early September, the number of users went up by 115,255, while the number of those who registered only for the EU Digital COVID Certificate service in that period was 498,842.
The latest incentive for registration, bringing 83,500 new users, was the recently held first phase of the population census, during which citizens could self-enumerate online via e-Citizens.
