October 21, 2020 - From the wooden churches of Pokupsko to the source of the Gacka river, a great new perspective of continental Croatia through the lens of Dutch resident Rene Pronk.
The most talked-about foreigner in Croatia at the moment is a Dutchman, Jan de Jong. From his spearheading the introduction of the digital nomad visa to plans to introduce Dutch technology to revive agriculture in northern Croatia, Jan is spreading his brand of positivity all over the country. But he is not the only Dutch resident doing incredible things here. There are others working in different fields away from the spotlight.
Among them is a man who is high on my list to finally meet, but time has been the enemy. Rene Pronk is a Dutchman who has been living with his family for years in rural Croatia, and if his life is even 10% of his Facebook posts, then he must be a very contented man indeed.
I first came across him about three years ago, and one of the first things I learned about Rene was his incredible NGO, Proplan, which is raising money in the Netherlands to help the old, isolated people in Croatia, who live alone, often without basic utilities, where loneliness is an even bigger enemy than hunger and the cold. Rene, his family and volunteer team, do incredible work to bring some comfort and hope to these old people, and they are often the only human contact they encounter. One of the most striking things about that article were the fabulous photos that Rene took of some of the people he was helping. He is an outstanding photographer, and I always enjoy his early morning landscape shots in the mist from different parts of continental Croatia in my Facebook feed.
I was delighted to learn yesterday that Rene has started a new blog highlighting some of the lesser-known parts of continental Croatia, accompanied by some of his magnificent photography.
Although there are only a few articles up at the moment, I have already learned a lot about places I had never heard of, including the wooden churches of Pokupsko in Zagreb County, complete with day tour itinerary.
Continental Croatia needs a lot more promotion, and if the early blogs are anything to go by, Rene's eye is likely to take us in directions and locations other tourism promotion media overlook. Namely, mushroom risotto, glazed pork ribs with homemade potato chips, sea bass with young spinach, chestnut puree, mandarin sauce, and lemon foam, or scampi and mussels buzara with macaroni make up only half of what you can enjoy.
Meat lovers can dive into veal ribeye or Argentinian ribeye with aromatic young potatoes, beef wellington with cream of mushroom, red onions, and goose liver wrapped in pastry with mashed potatoes and a beef and truffle sauce, or the bone-in ribeye for two (dry-aged 30-100 days), with truffle mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables!

October 21, 2020 – Croatian company Splendor Tekstil has produced a new innovative product - four-layer masks that stop corona and other viruses, with 99 percent antibacterial and 99 percent antiviral protection.
As Jutarnji.hr reports, after being the first in Croatia to mass-produce surgical masks in June, the domestic company Splendor Tekstil continued to do an excellent job.
This family company has locations in Klanjec and Sesvete and employs more than 50 people. Otherwise, they produce Gore-tex clothing, special functional professional clothing. In Sesvete they only produce masks – four million of them a month.
Nanotechnology
Their new mask is based on innovative nanotechnology. It is similar to a classic medical mask, but its nanolayer gives it extra protection against viruses. At the time of the COVID-19 virus pandemic, such protection is extremely important.
"We are now faced with a virus, and a medical or any other mask provides only bacterial filtration. We are working in that direction now because innovation is the foundation of our company's functioning," said Splendor Tekstil.
Namely, medical masks are only antibacterial and for their certification, the norm does not provide the testing for viruses, but exclusively for bacteria. Even a medical mask of the highest standard of grade 2R, in addition to having more than 98 percent bacterial filtration and protection against liquid splashes, has no protection against viruses. This prompted them to make a mask that would, in addition to antibacterial, also provide antiviral protection.
Protects, but does no harm
"Our product is incomparable to anything that can be found on the market now. We use special filter materials. Otherwise, all medical masks contain polypropylene, and here it is combined with innovative nanotechnology. It is not metals that are used, but polymer. That is why this mask is more affordable and competitive in the global market.
The polymer does not degrade and does not enter the respiratory system, it is completely stable, chemically inert and extremely resistant to high and low temperatures and UV rays, and completely harmless to health,“ explained Suzana Perčić, head of development at Splendor Tekstil.
“It’s good to note how important it is that the mask protects, but it’s equally important that it doesn’t harm,” Perčić stressed.
Masks crucial in the fight against coronavirus
The new mask has passed all European laboratory tests, and Splendor Tekstil has received very good feedback from relevant domestic laboratories.
The new four-layer Splendor Tekstil mask can be worn for 24 hours, and if stored in a hygienically acceptable manner after use, even for longer. Of course, when removing and putting on the mask, it is important to be careful and have clean hands.
Since production started only a week ago, the masks cannot be found on the market yet, but they can be ordered directly from the company.
It is important to know that wearing a protective mask has proven to be a key step in preventing the spread of coronavirus infection during the pandemic. Experts have determined that this, along with keeping a distance, is the main means of prevention.

ZAGREB, Oct 21, 2020 - Over the past 24 hours, Croatia has registered a record high of 1,424 new coronavirus infections and there have been 11 deaths, the national COVID-19 response team said on Wednesday.
Currently, 622 COVID patients are being treated in hospitals, and 38 of them are on ventilators. The number of active cases stands at 6,459, and there are 24,242 people in self-isolation.
Since February 25, when Croatia registered its first case of the infection, 28,287 people have contracted coronavirus, 393 of them have died, and 21,435 have recovered, including 473 in the last 24 hours.
To date, 411,947 people have been tested for the virus, including 8,255 over the past 24 hours.
This is the third time in a week that the number of single-day cases has exceeded one thousand.

October 21, 2020 - To the relief of citizens in Split and its surroundings, we are one step closer to constructing the highly anticipated Omis fast road.
The tender for the TTTS-Dugi Rati road, which lasted an incredible 19 months, has finally been completed. There is no need to emphasize just how much the construction of this road would mean for Omis and the whole of central Dalmatia. Its discussion has gone on for decades.
Although no one knows when the fast road from Split to Omis will be built, things have at least began moving in the right direction. There is a bit more certainty about the construction of the Omis bypass, with the construction of which will transfer part of the traffic jams from the highway to the Omis hinterland. The new tunnel and the bridge over the Cetina should relieve at least part of the traffic so that from Omis to Split, it is possible to bypass through Tugar, Srinjine, and Žrnovnica.
After the tender, Croatian Roads (Hrvatske ceste) commented extensively for Dalmacija Danas. They explained the tender's details and the planned route that will have to pass over the slopes of the Perun hill, so it will consist of numerous viaducts and bridges.
“Preparation of changes to the preliminary and main project documentation, implementation of geodetic and geotechnical works and obtaining a location and construction permit for the section TTTS - Dugi Rat with connecting roads was contracted with the Association of Business Entities Geoprojekt dd, Split, Mobilita Evolva doo, Zagreb, Radionica mostova doo, Samobor, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy Split, ZG-Projekt doo, Zagreb. The value of the contract is HRK 10,490,000.00 without VAT, with a deadline for the preparation of project documentation lasting 12 months from the date of signing the contract. The length of the section that is the subject of the contract is 13 km.
The need for the intervention that is the subject of this contract stems from the fact that the existing state road DC8 from Stobrec to Omis is the only road connection between the southern coastal settlements and the city of Omis with Split as the main center of Split-Dalmatia County. Along the entire stretch of the future road, the existing state road is located close to the sea and passes through the settlements of Stobreč, Grljevac, Sv. Martin, Krilo, Sumpetar, Dugi Rat, and Omis.
The existing road is burdened with numerous level crossings that are mostly irregular in geometry and without additional lanes for left and right turns. The floor plan elements are uneven, visibility is insufficient, and there are strong intercity and suburban public bus traffic on the road without bus stops and footpaths. The course of transit and local traffic and their collision, especially in peak loads and during the tourist season, lead to major delays.
All of the above causes low throughput and endangers traffic safety, and prevents urban and tourist development of the settlement.
Considering the construction (residential and commercial buildings) of the narrower belt of the road, it is not possible to realize the necessary reconstruction works, and there is a need to build a road in the new corridor.
The necessity of this project is also visible from the analysis of existing traffic flows in the coverage area of the project based on available data on traffic loads according to the publication "Counting road traffic in the Republic of Croatia in 2015" published by Hrvatske ceste d.o.o. Zagreb.
The road construction, which will be located in the edge zone of the coast, east of the existing DC8, would enable the smooth development of settlements and further development of tourism, and transit traffic would no longer pass through the settlements.
The project was designed as a fast road in the part of the TTTS-Dugi Rat junction with two separate roads and the Dugi Rat-Omiš junction with one road. A building permit was obtained and consumed for the TTTS-Grljevac subsection.
However, due to the high costs of construction of these roads, the investor in 2015 ordered a proposal to optimize the project while maintaining the existing road corridor. The changes relate to the horizontal and vertical geometry to avoid larger cuts in the terrain and the associated costs of securing the slope. Between the two tunnels, the separation of the separated axes was performed, and the denivelation of the same. The optimization shortened the route with four lanes, and now only the first approximately 8100 m is planned as a four-lane road, while the rest of the route is planned as a two-lane road.
Regarding the description of the project itself, the expressway route starts at the junction "TTTS" and continues to the previous section as a four-lane road whose roads are separated by a green belt. The expressway route crosses the roundabout with an overpass “TTTS” approximately 235 m long and is connected to the roundabout via the northern and southern ramps of the junction. Further to the east, there is the bridge "Žrnovnica" (L = approx. 540 m), which in addition to the river Žrnovnica leads over the county road ŽC6142 and the densely built part of Podstrana.
After the completion of the bridge, the left and right pavements are separated and leveled and pass through the tunnels “Perun” (Ls = approx. 200 m, Lj = approx. 220 m) and “Rudine” (Ls = approx. 365 m, Lj = approx. 360 m). After the tunnel, the left and right pavements approach and continue to the viaduct “Duge njive” (L = approx. 90 m). The route continues southeast towards the junction "Stara Podstrana" at km about 5 + 200, connecting with the state road DC8.
The “Stara Podstrana” node is connected to DC8 via axis 10, axis 16, and axis 17. Axis 18 represents the reconstructed DC8 at the part of the intersection. Via axis 14, the “Stara Podstrana” junction connects with the county road ŽC6162, which is located east of the junction, and ŽC6162 itself is proposed via axis 15 and crosses the expressway with the overpass “Drinovac” (at km approx. 6 + 340).
The “Jesenice” junction is located further to the southeast at km 8 + 100 and connects the expressway with the state road DC8 in the south and the local road LC67112 in the north. These two roads are connected with a new road (axis 20), which connects to DC8 near the future "Krilo" port.
There is a three-lane tunnel "Krilo" (L = approx. 170 m) on this connecting road, which passes through the hill near the state road. The three-lane tunnel contains, in addition to two lanes, an additional lane for slow-moving vehicles on the rise.
The expressway to the “Krilo Jesenice” junction is run as a four-lane road, and after fitting the junction ramps of km 8 + 1000 to the end of the route, it is run as a two-lane road. Further to the southeast, at km 10 + 340, the “Jesenice” overpass leads above the proposed local road LC67112 (axis 29). The route then descends in height and, at the same time, approaches the coast and settlements in terms of the floor plan, and reaches the junction “Dugi Rat” at approx. km 13 + 860.
Here we would like to emphasize that for the previous section Mravice - TTTS junction (2.5 km long), the procurement of works for the first three phases (Mravince junction with access roads) has already started. In contrast, for the remaining part, the procurement of works will be launched in the second half of 2021. The total estimated value of the said project is approximately HRK 250,000,000.00 without VAT.
Completion of all these works will significantly improve the traffic picture of Split-Dalmatia County in terms of increasing safety and traffic flow and greatly relieve the road network on the stretch from the entrance to the city of Split, through these settlements through which the state road D8 and ultimately of the town of Omis.
It is planned to apply for EU funds for all projeects," answers Croatian Roads.

October 21, 2020 - The 81st Skal International World Congress will be held in Opatija and Rijeka in 2022, bringing around 1,000 tourism professionals to the Kvarner region.
At the online session of the General Assembly of the Skål International Association, the Skål Club Kvarner unanimously confirmed they would host the World Skål Congress, which will be held from October 13 to 18, 2022.
HRTurizam reports that, unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Skål Congress, which was to be held in Opatija and Rijeka this year, was canceled under the motto “SKÅL CONGRESS IN THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2020”. However, tourism workers from Kvarner did not give up on the unique opportunity to present their region to the representatives of the world's largest association of tourism professionals. They will still have their chance in a few years.
The repeated demanding candidacy of Kvarner, Opatija, and Rijeka was presented at today's session of the General Assembly by Irena Peršić Živadinov (president of Skål Club Kvarner for two terms and director of the Kvarner Tourist Board). Kvarner was unanimously, and with the great support of colleagues from around the world, entrusted with hosting this event, which is of immeasurable importance for tourism destinations and the whole of Croatia.
Skål Club Kvarner is celebrating 10 years of work this year and was founded thanks to Katica Hauptfeld, owner of the famous travel agency Katarina line, which gathered some of the most influential tourist workers in Kvarner. Together, projects and ideas quickly became noticed in Skål International circles internationally. Thus, both this candidacy and the congressional hosting in 2020 and again in 2022 is largely to her credit.
It is expected that during this prestigious international event in 2022, about 1,000 participants will visit Kvarner, including many owners of influential travel agencies and tour operators who will have the opportunity to show the tourism potential of the region and who will even more successfully offer Croatian tourist facilities to its clients.
SKÅL International is an international organization of tourism managers with about 14,000 members in over 340 clubs in more than 100 countries around the world and is the largest in the tourism sector. Members of SKÅL Club Kvarner are professionals in Kvarner tourism (hoteliers, agencies, tourist boards, representatives of the academic community, and others). Skål clubs Zagreb, Dubrovnik, and Split still operate in Croatia.

October the 21st, 2020 - The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a horrific blow to the world's tourism, travel and hospitality sector, and countries which rely more heavily on attracting foreign tourists have struggled to stay afloat as the virus continues to spread. Croatia is not immune (no pun intended) to these negative trends, and the Croatian hospitality sector is now at its weakest. Zagreb Mayor Bandic has vowed to stand by and support the Croatian capital's suffering hospitality and catering sector.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, following a meeting with Zagreb Mayor Bandic, the president of the National Association of Caterers, Marin Medak, has more than likely reassured many that their demands had been met, according to a report from N1.
"Zagreb Mayor Bandic instructed that the measures for all caterers be extended and that those people are exempted from paying rent and costs for the use of public areas. Those who rent space from the City of Zagreb are also exempt from making payments, their utility/communal fees will be reduced by 30 percent, too. It would be great if the state did the same. We hope that this will continue until the spring,'' said Marin Medak of Milan Bandic's fight for the capital's services.
He pointed out that they demanded that consumption tax also be abolished, that parking spaces near the driveway be vacated if guests only wanted to come and pick up food, that heating be installed on the terraces so that drinks or food could be sold outside to preserve jobs, as well as other certain things that are necessary for the organisation of the wildly popular Advent in Zagreb event. For example, the rule that only caterers may compete for the use of Christmas cottages and that the event goes in terms of having 15 ''little'' advents in the City of Zagreb.
Advent will, at least as things currently stand, continue to be held in Zagreb this festive season, but on a smaller scale than it has been in previous years. As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 20th of October, 2020, the new option of Uber delivering products purchased on Konzum's online store is now available in Zagreb and its surroundings, as well as in Split and Kastela, Rijeka and Kukuljanovo, Dubrovnik and Pula, and the plan is currently to expand the new Croatian delivery service to other cities throughout the country.
From now on, customers buying products on Konzum's online store have the additional option of having their ordered groceries, household and hygiene supplies and other products to their selected address thanks to Konzum's partnership with Uber, which also brings its global DropOff service to Croatia. This new Croatian delivery service is currently available to customers from Zagreb, Sesvete, Samobor, Zapresic, Velika Gorica, Split and Kastela, as well as in Rijeka and Kukuljanovo, Dubrovnik and Pula.
The buying process has been made very simple. After selecting the desired products on Konzum's online store, the customer should the select the Partner Delivery service and then select their delivery location. Konzum notes that there are additional differences in the use of the Partner Delivery service when compared to the Konzum regular delivery option. Thus, it should be borne in mind that when choosing the Partner Delivery service, Uber drivers pick up the products in stores and therefore it isn't always possible to display the exact stock status on the page in real time.
If a certain product isn't on the store's shelf, Konzum employees will call the customer and check if they want a replacement item. The range available through the Partner Delivery service is narrower than the one available to customers who choose the Konzum delivery option, and the ordered products are delivered to the person's home address, but not to their very doorstep. Payment is made exclusively online, the minimum order amount is 200 kuna, and delivery is charged at 30 kuna regardless of the size of the order. The big advantage of this new Croatian delivery service is the possibility of having your items delivered on the same day, considering that the delivery terms are available to the customer within four hours from the moment of ordering. If it suits the customer better, they can then schedule the delivery for another day, within a week from the day of ordering.
After the customer completes the purchase on Konzum's online store, Konzum schedules their delivery via the Uber Central platform. Confirmation of the scheduled delivery to the customer will arrive via SMS in which they will receive information about the vehicle registration number and the name of the Uber driver, who will contact the customer by phone when they arrive at the corresponding address so that they can pick up the ordered products.
"At Konzum, we're constantly recording an increase in interest in online shopping, and we're striving to provide our customers with an even more pleasant online shopping experience through numerous innovations and investments. In the spring, with the launch of the additional Pokupi (Pickup) service, we enabled them the ability to purchase groceries and other products from the comfort of their own homes even in the most challenging times, and in partnership with Uber we want to offer them a new option so that they can receive their orders at their home address on the same day,'' said Tomislav Kramaric, a member of the Management Board of Konzum.
"We're continuing to work to support the community of our users and drivers during these difficult times. We're pleased to have opened our platform today in cooperation with Konzum, which will speed up food delivery for Croats and help drivers overcome this challenging situation,'' said Giovanna D'Esposito, Uber's General Manager for Southern Europe.
User and driver safety remains a priority for Uber. The company distributed 950 hygiene kits to drivers containing masks, gloves, disinfectant gels and sprays. In addition, Uber has focused its efforts on implementing real-time processes and technology solutions to ensure responsible and safe use of the services at all times. In addition to the new Partner Delivery service, customers still have access to Konzum's regular delivery, the Pokupi/Pickup service and the Drive-in option in Zagreb's Vrbani.

October the 21st, 2020 - The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has seen many a planned investment shelved in anticipation of more stable times or simply binned entirely. When it comes to the Peljesac Bridge construction, however, things are going full steam ahead in spite of the challenging times in which we continue to find ourselves.
The pandemic year has of course caused issues of its own to the Peljesac Bridge construction plans, with the long-awaited bridge being built by Chinese workers who had their own various issues with the delivery of not only the necessary equipment and parts, but of themselves as a result of quarantines and testing.
The Peljesac Bridge saga is an apparently endless one, but this long-anticipated strategic Croatian project finally kicked off thanks to European Union (EU) funds and a keen Chinese consortium. The bridge, which will eliminate the need for those crossing from the extreme south of Dalmatia into the rest of the country or back again to cross into neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina (Neum), as as important to the European Union as it is to Croatia, as it will link EU territory.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the Chinese workers aren't letting anything get in the way of getting the job done on the Peljesac Bridge construction site down in sunny Dalmatia, and as many as 600 of them are currently working on making sure things stay on track.
The N1 team recently paid a visit to the Peljesac Bridge construction to check how the coming together of one of the largest strategic projects in Croatian history is progressing in these trying times.
The Chinese workers currently working on the bridge, all 600 of them, don't leave the construction site and work at full capacity. In the spring of 2022, the works are expected to finally be completed, reported Hari Kocic.

October the 21st, 2020 - The coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc with the Croatian economy, with many out of work, facing the repayment of debts and foreclosures since the monatorium ceased, and wondering how the pay the bills, the Croatian Government has come out with a new set of Croatian economic measures designed to preserve jobs and help out the enfeebled economy until the end of what has been a truly dreadful 2020.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 20th of October, 2020, at the beginning of the press conference which was held on Tuesday, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic made sure to remind those present of the effects of the Croatian economic measures that government has introduced and taken so far.
"So far, according to the Croatian Employment Service, we've paid out 6.85 billion kuna for various measures to preserve jobs, and when contributions are added into that figure, we come to over 10 billion kuna. That's what we have done so far,'' stated the Prime Minister.
He stated that the goal is to simplify the new set of Croatian economic measures and to include a wider circle of those who may use them. The total cost of the new measures should be between 300 and 350 million kuna. The basic goal is to preserve jobs. The measures will be applied from October the 1st, 2020, right up to the end of the year.
The first measure - cutting down on working hours
We're going down to 70 percent, so far it has been at 50, we're reducing the amount of documentation. In a week that lasts 5 days, someone can work for a day and a half, and the state will make up for those three and a half days.
The second measure - increasing available aid
Under these new Croatian economic measures, the maximum monthly allowance per worker will now increase from 2,000 to 2,800 kuna per worker.
The grading of support is being introduced in accordance with the rate of decline in turnover - 2000 kuna for a 40 percent drop in turnover. It is also growing due to the drop in traffic. So it will grow to 4000 kuna per worker going for a drop in turnover from 60 percent to more.
The beneficiaries of this measure are entirely exempt from paying any of their contributions.
The decline in turnover will not be measured on a monthly basis, but by looking at the comparison to the decline in turnover in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of this year with the turnover in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2019, thus enabling a more realistic picture of the decline in traffic in individual industries.
''We're leaving an exception for sectors whose work is limited by staff decisions, such as those in food and beverage services. We're leaving them the choice as to whether it will be looked at and as such done month by month or like this [aforementioned] with quarters,'' explained Plenkovic, clearly showing his understanding for those in this less than favourable situation.
