ZAGREB, 9 January, 2021 - Eighteen container homes donated by Turkey arrived in Lekenik on Saturday to be used for the accommodation of people left homeless by a devastating earthquake that struck central Croatia on 29 December, the Turkish Embassy said, adding that another 16 containers would be delivered later in the day.
A shipment of containers arrived two days ago and were delivered to Glina (12), Sisak (6), Lekenik (6) and Hrvatska Kostajnica (6).
Turkey has pledged 100 container homes for earthquake victims in Croatia. A total of 64 containers are expected to arrive on Saturday and the remaining 36 in the coming days.
Earlier this week, the government in Ankara announced an additional 100 container homes, which are expected to come soon, the Turkish Embassy said in a statement.
In Lekenik, the shipment was welcomed by Turkish Ambassador Mustafa Babur Hizlan and State Secretary at the Croatian Ministry of the Interior Irena Petrijevcanin Vuksanovic.
Shortly after the earthquake, which caused extensive property damage in Sisak-Moslavina County, Turkish authorities contacted Croatian authorities offering the necessary assistance given that Turkey has a lot of experience with earthquakes.
Turkey's Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has delivered 500 blankets, 272 electric heaters, 480 tents as well as food and hygiene products.
Ten experts from the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) have been present in Croatia since 4 January helping with the relief effort.
The Turkish Embassy said Turkey is "a true friend" of Croatia, as confirmed by the Turkish president in conversation with his Croatian counterpart, and that "it is time for brotherhood".
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has extended condolences to the families of the people killed and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the disaster.

ZAGREB, 9 January, 2021 - The Civil Protection Authority on Friday launched the website https://potresinfo.gov.hr containing all information about efforts to deal with the aftermath of the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that hit Sisak-Moslavina County and parts of Karlovac and Zagreb Counties on 29 December.
The website provides information about organised collective accommodation and how citizens from the quake-affected areas can get temporary shelter if their properties are destroyed or damaged.
Also information on donations of food and other necessities as well as about fodder is available.
Furthermore, the website informs about mobile teams providing psychological assistance, among other things.
It gives an overview of activities of the government and services to mitigate the aftermath of the devastating quake that took seven lives and caused huge damage.

January 9, 2021 - Croatian skier Filip Zubčić wins second in Adelboden and achieved two second-place finishes, two days in a row!
For the second day in a row, and for the third time in his career in Adelboden, Filip Zubčić stepped onto the second pillar of the podium in the World Cup giant slalom race. Above him was only the incredible Frenchman Alexis Pinturault, who came to his third consecutive victory in this season's giant slalom, with just 26-hundredths ahead of the Zagreb skier.
Zubčić finished the first run in fifth place, just over one second behind the fastest - Swiss skier Loic Meillard. Zubčić was 72 hundredths slower than Pinturault, who had the second-best time.
With a traditionally aggressive and risky second run, Filip took the lead by beating the then leading Italian De Aleprandini by 80 hundredths of a second, which was the fourth-best time.
It was too difficult a task for Norwegian Alexander Aamodt Kilde and Swiss Marc Odermatt, who were better than Zubčić in the first run, but were almost half a second behind in the second.
Maestro Alexis Pinturault overcame the second race on the Chuenisbaergli slope without a single mistake and gave Loic Meillard a serious challenge.
The Swiss skier, who never won a giant slalom race, was on his way to second place, but made a big mistake in the middle of the course, completely lost speed and in the end, barely managed to reach third place with only a two-hundredths of a second advantage over compatriot Odermatt in fourth.
With his 33rd career victory and 17th in giant slalom races, Pinturault took the lead in the giant slalom standings with 440 points, 40 more than Odermatt. In third is Filip Zubčić, who reached 368 points on the seventh podium in his career.
The French skier also leads the standings for the Grand Crystal Globe with 675 points. Norwegian Aamodt Kilde is second with 560, and third is Odermatt with 501. Filip Zubčić is in fourth place with 455 points.
The skiers will fight for points in the slalom in Adelboden on Sunday, and Zubčić will be joined by the Croatian trio from Sljeme, Istok Rodeš, Matej Vidović, and Samuel Kolega. The first run is scheduled for 10:30 am, and the second at 1:30 pm.

January 9, 2021 - Croatian start-up ETF Airways has announced plans to begin flying this year.
Ex Yu Aviation reports that ETF Airways, a new Croatian start-up registered in November last year, has plans to launch operations in 2021 with charter flights from the Adriatic coast to destinations around Europe.
“ETF Airways is a new Croatian charter carrier that wants to improve the connectivity of Adriatic coastal cities with European and other destinations. At this point, we are looking for new members of our flying family,” ETF said.
Namely, ETF is currently hiring a cabin crew for its Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The crew will be based both at home and abroad. ETF Airways also plans to offer wet-leasing services.
Ex Yu Aviation adds that Trade Air, which operates international charter flights and domestic PSO services, is the only successful Croatian airline with a similar model to ETF Airways. As their existing PSO contracts expired on March 28, 2020, the Croatian Government is expected to grant the airline new four-year PSO contracts (currently held by Croatia Airlines and Trade Air) this year.
Croatia is no stranger to charter airlines, and some have certainly been more successful than others. Ex Yu Aviation recalls some you may remember, like Dubrovnik Airline, Anic Airways, Air Adriatic, Air Croatia, Sea Air, Limitless Airways, AWEX Croatia, Libertas Air, and European Coastal Airlines. Other airlines, like Dalmatian and Smile Air, never officially launched.
“Based on current data, Croatia Airlines will have the largest share of available seat capacity to and from the country this year, standing at 30.2% with some 1.495.300 seats on offer. It is followed by easyJet, Lufthansa, Eurowings, Ryanair and British Airways,” Ex Yu Aviation concludes.

January 9, 2021 – The area affected by the devastating earthquake of 29 December 2020 is mostly rural. People there live off the land. They employ others at family farms and as small scale producers. Ordering from a Petrinja OPG or one from the surroundings directly helps families and the economy of the earthquake-affected area, so here's a list detailing them
Alongside the outpourings of sympathy and promise of prayers, since the large earthquakes of December 2020 struck Sisak-Moslavina County, Total Croatia News has been inundated with requests from regular readers and other asking how they can directly and effectively help. TCN has tried to answer all enquiries the best we can and has striven towards directing donors to the best-placed outlets.
Certainly, the rebuild of the communities and economies in places like Petrinja, Glina, Sisak and hundreds of surrounding villages, hamlets and settlements will take months, even years. As TCN discovered after we visited the affected region one day after the earthquake, this area is predominantly rural. People here live off the land, from agricultural endeavours. Small producers and family farms make up much of the economy. In a year where such producers have been hard hit by travel restrictions and other aspects of the pandemic, the livelihoods of many have been shattered by the subsequent earthquake.
In a pro-active, helpful and exhaustive piece of data collection, writer Antonia Dobrota and the team at Croatian-language tourism portal cimerfraj have over recent days come up with an inspired suggestion of how [people can directly help the economies and people of the affected region. They have published a list of as many small producers, family farms and Petrinja OPG producers, plus those in surrounding areas.
By ordering food, produce and goods like pottery from this list, people can spend their money directly within the economies of the affected area – no suspicion, no doubt, no middlemen, no staffing costs deducted. It is an inspired decision to construct (and continually update) such a list. Bravo, Antonia and cimerfraj! Several Croatian-language media outlets have since republished the list. Total Croatia News is pleased to do so in English. We warmly encourage its use, not only now, but in the months that follow.
Being small producers and family farms, most of the producers below are not only vital to others in the local communities (by offering employment opportunities), their goods are almost exclusively organic and produced in a traditional, eco-friendly manner. Any orders should be submitted with the utmost confidence.
(OPG is a designation in Croatia that is given specifically to family farms and small, community producers)

Cimerfraj add the following notes:
This list includes all small producers and family farms from the earthquake-affected settlements and the surrounding areas. At the time of compiling the list, we do not know whether these manufacturers are harmed or not, nor do we consider this important. We believe that synergy is necessary in order to initiate the balanced development of favorable existential opportunities for life in this area.
Due to some parts of the area currently being poorly covered by phone and internet signal, some of the manufacturers are easier to contact by text message, SMS or WhatsApp.
The list is still being updated. If you know of a domestic manufacturer from the affected area who is not currently included, please send all relevant details to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
January 9, 2021 - Students in Croatia should return to classrooms on January 18, said the Ministry of Science and the City Education Office.
Jutarnji List reports that classes in Croatia, except those affected by the earthquake-affected Sisak-Moslavina County, should likely resume in schools on January 18, and the first day of classes in Zagreb schools should begin with evacuation exercises, revealed the Ministry of Science and City Education Office.
Over the next week, all counties should make decisions on teaching, and citing the favorable epidemiological situation related to COVID-19, Radovan Fuchs' ministry expects that the counties will mostly adhere to the A model of teaching. Namely, according to the MZO database of infected students, in the week before the holidays, from December 14 to 20, there were 2657 infected, and from January 1 to 7, the number dropped to 507 0.11 percent of students.
In the last week, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County recorded 76 COVID-positive schoolchildren (0.27 percent), Split-Dalmatia County 0.17 percent (93), Zagreb County 0.10 percent (31 students), and the City of Zagreb, if the data is to be believed, dropped to 108 positives, or 0.11 percent of students.
“We sincerely hope that the trend with small numbers of infected students will continue so that we can start the second semester with as many children in schools as possible,” said the advisor to the Minister of Education Božo Pavičin.
According to the confirmation of the head of the Zagreb Education Office, Ivica Lovrić, consultations with the Ministry on teaching began yesterday and will continue on Monday. In Zagreb, the earthquake is a priority, i.e., the safety of students in school buildings, which is why COVID fell into the background.
Parent associations and individuals ask questions about children's safety in old buildings, advocating for online teaching. Some school principals say the smaller cracks in buildings from the March earthquake have now widened and need to be repaired, even if such damage does not affect the facility’s functionality.
“Our school is certainly in better condition than before the earthquake in March because reinforcements were placed during the reconstruction. Therefore, the building is fortified, and whether it is safe, I really cannot claim. It is important to carry out evacuation exercises with students, adapted to each school building,” says Tihomir Engelsfeld, director of a Zagreb grammar school, whose building was badly damaged in March. The Petrinja earthquake on December 28 also caused a slight crack in the plaster.
The City Education Office says parents' fear is understandable but reiterates that most of the school buildings damaged in the March earthquake were well repaired.
In the event of a final decision to start teaching according to the A model, the City Office will appeal to teachers and school professional services to continue thematically on the first day.
“All schools will have an obligation to conduct evacuation exercises for all students on the first day of school,” says the head of the Zagreb Education Office, Ivica Lovrić.
In Sisak-Moslavina County, the online model is the most promising, combined with a mixed form of teaching.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Education sent an online questionnaire to the county education office for school principals in Banija to find out how many students do not currently live in their home, how many intend to return, the needs for textbooks and tablets, and how many students and teachers are without access to electricity and internet.
The president of the Association of Principals of Croatian Secondary Schools, Suzana Hitrec, hopes that the second semester will start with normal classes, except, of course, in schools affected by the earthquake.
“Now, it is important for us to conduct quality evacuation exercises in schools and to organize professional services for providing psychological assistance. The students have been stressed by COVID so far, and now by the earthquake. It is necessary to make them aware of what to do in case of an earthquake and not panic. Now we are all more sensitive than we have ever been before,” says Suzana Hitrec.

January 9, 2021 - Special occasions require special wines, which is probably why a Croatian red from Peljesac will be enjoyed at the January 20 Presidential inauguration of Joe Biden.
Where would America be without Croatia?
First, a little stone to build The White House, then a few vines to produce Zinfandel, then a little Super Bowl sports coaching with Bill Belichick.
And now, a little drop of red for the presidential inauguration.
Croatian media is reporting that the Benmosche Family Dingac will be served in Washington on the big day.
Croatian online wine merchants, The Wine and More, have more information about the wine in question, and the rather famous American connection:
Robert Benmosche, was the CEO of MetLife when he retired in 2006 to become a winemaker in Croatia. The Empire State native had built a wine collection of a few thousand bottles when a trip to Dubrovnik sparked an interest in making Zinfandel. Robert bought land on Pelješac peninsula, and planted Plavac mali grapes in protected region where Plavac mali gives the best results. And in Viganj he planted Zinfandel. At the time he was investing in vineyards, they found out that Zinfandel is genetically the same as Crljenak Kaštelanski. Both Dingac and Zinfandel are coming from young vineyards planted in 2006. Wines are made with traditional techniques and kept in barrique barrels for 12 months and in bottle another 18 months.
Croatia wine is of course no stranger to the biggest global ceremonies. At the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, 11,000 bottles of the 1947 Ilockli Podrum Traminac were ordered for the Royal guests.
And if you would like to sample a bottle of the famous bottle, you still can, but bring your credit card. When I visited the winery last year, they still had 182 bottles of the 1947 left, with a cool price tag of 55,000 kuna (about US$9000) per bottle. January 7, 2021 - Transparent donations getting to the people who need them most are essential in emergency response. TCN follows the Voice of Entrepreneurs Glas Poduzetnika (UGP) fund to report on the realities on the ground.
The donations are pouring in from all over the world to help the victims of the earthquakes in Petrinja, Glina and Sisak, donations which have been gratefully received and which are making a difference.
As I wrote previously, many people have contacted us at TCN asking for advice on the best place to send money. We published a list a few days ago, but I was really happy to see one more fund set up 7 days ago, from Udruga Glas Poduzetnika, or Voice of Entrepreneurs, which is a growing force for reform and change in Croatia. Run by people who want to see an end to corruption and needless red tape, I was sure that their efforts to help their fellow citizens in crisis would be transparent, dynamic, focused and effective, with all money donated going to the people who needed it most. And so it proved, which is why I am now directing anyone looking for a place to donate to UGP, as I explained a couple of days ago.
UGP co-founder Drazen Orescanin was kind enough to give me an in-depth interview yesterday on the focus, plans and activities of the UGP fund, and it was great to hear that 100% of the money donated will go to help those who need it most.
In order to provide more transparent donation information, we agreed to publish a daily report of the fund's activities, finances and purchases. This was due to be published yesterday, but the crazy events of January 6, 2021 meant a slight delay. As resources and time allow, this will be a daily feature, and you can track progress here.
Today, we have managed to deliver 6 housing containers to the families in need. Many of them had children who still slept in houses that were dangerous and in cars.
The four-member family Đelalija will unfortunately lose their house, which is too badly damaged. But, because of the help of our members and donors, the family will no longer have to sleep in the car.
The Augustinović family has two children, and the third is on the way. They are grateful that they will no longer have to sleep in an unsafe house.
The Bunčić family house also received a red sticker, which means that they can’t live there anymore. Donation of a housing container means a lot to them and guarantees at least a little security in these difficult times.
The Lovrinčić family of four says: "Thanks to the wonderful people who sent us this housing container so that we don't have to be in a house that has collapsed inside and is not safe to live in, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!"
Families Božić and Jurković have also received housing containers later this day. For them, this means calmer nights in safety.
This weekend we will coordinate with our volunteers in the field, so next week we can deliver more housing containers. We expect the delivery of at least two more containers for families in Sisak-Moslavina county on Monday.

January 9, 2021 - The terrible 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake shattered the city in seconds. A stunning animation before, during and after the rebuild.
The devastating earthquakes in Zagreb and Petrinja in the last 12 months are sadly not isolated events in Croatian history, and modern technology has enabled the most terrible and deadly of them - the 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake - to come alive.
Novena, a digital studio in Zagreb published a graphic and very interesting 3D animated reconstruction of the enormous earthquake that shook Dubrovnik way back in 1667, it was one of two huge earthquakes to hit the territory of modern-day Croatia. The fascinating video gives us an insight into how Dubrovnik looked before the earthquake shattered the city on the 6th of April 1667, the damage it caused to the infrastructure and the buildings, and a flash-forward of Dubrovnik as we know and love it today. This unexpected and terrifying act of nature practically destroyed the city and it is estimated that around 5,000 people died, and a fire raged for 20 days.
Animators at Novena spent 3 months working on the project. The video, which brings to life not only the sheer devastation of the earthquake, but the amazing abilities of modern-day technology; was part of the well-received exhibition “Stjepan Gradic: Father of the Homeland” at Dubrovnik’s museum.

January 9, 2021 – From this year, full-time Osijek and Baranja students can get free train travel any time throughout their own county and for travel to educational centres anywhere in Croatia, in a new deal struck by the county and the national train operator
Once a sea bed, the vast flatlands of Slavonia are perfect for farming. At one time, this area was the breadbasket for much of Yugoslavia. It really wasn't so long ago that many folks left dry and dusty Dalmatia in search of employment and new lives on this fertile ground. Now, it's the other way round - Slavonian youth travel to the coast each summer in search of seasonal work. Others move to Ireland, Germany, Austria. Slavonia is losing many skilled younger people at an alarming rate. Increased mechanisation has reduced the need for labour in the area's agriculture. And, besides, most Slavonian youths are these days educated to a degree where their ambitions are greater than joining local agricultural endeavours.
In an area with limited possibilities, limited opportunities, education lies at the heart of survival in Slavonia. Local authorities know this and try to facilitate education as best they can. It is to that end that those in the Slavonian county of Osijek and Baranja have struck a deal with Croatia's national train operator to offer free train travel to all full-time Osijek and Baranja students.
Agreed upon at the end of last year, the scheme was implemented on 1 January 2021. Osijek and Baranja County has agreed to co-finance journeys for full-time Osijek and Baranja students who study not only within the county itself but across the whole of Croatia.

Monthly tickets for travel within the county already held a discount of up to 65 percent given to full-time students by the train operator, depending on the route. The County has now agreed to pay the remainder of the monthly ticket for all full-time Osijek and Baranja students. To meet the requirements of this deal, the departing and destination stations must both be in Osijek-Baranja County. The free monthly ticket allows an unlimited number of trips on the route, meaning that Osijek and Baranja students can also use the train for free on recreational journeys within the county.
The second deal sees the County co-finance 50% of journey costs for full-time Osijek and Baranja students who study elsewhere in Croatia, with the train operator HŽ agreeing to grant a discount to cover the other 50 %.
In order to obtain a free (monthly or individual) ticket, it is necessary to first obtain a certificate from their Administrative Department for the Economy. To get the certificate, Osijek and Baranja students must submit a copy of their identity card, a certificate of full-time study and two completed application forms (these can be found on the county's website www.obz.hr). Requests can be made in person or by mail (Osijek-Baranja County, Administrative Department for Economy, Županijska 4, Osijek or on the e-mail: This email address is being protected from spambots. Free tickets can thereafter be bought by Osijek and Baranja students at the box office, prior to travel, or on the train itself, upon producing the relevant and needed documentation.
