Stari Grad on Hvar: A Quality Destination Quietly Raising the Bar

January 27, 2020 - While Hvar Town attracts most of the media attention on Croatia's premier island, the former capital town of Stari Grad is quietly building up a quality tourism product of its own.  Having lived in Croatia for 17 years, 13 of them on Hvar, I have been able to watch the process of change in certain destinations. And while many coastal destinations on the Adriatic have traded in a little of their charm in exchange for those all-important (at least to the ministry) numbers of arrivals and overnight stays, there are thankfully some exceptions.  I am always…

CNN Highlights Dubrovnik in 2020 Fight Against Overtourism

January 25, 2020 - If 2019 was the year of overtourism, is 2020 the year crowded destinations fight back? CNN reports on various initiatives, including from Dubrovnik.  Where once Dubrovnik was hailed as one of the must-see destinations of Europe, the Pearl of the Adriatic, in recent years it has been more likely to be featured in the international media as a poster child of a new scourge of modern travel - overtourism.  Multiiple daily cruise ships, an army of Game of Thrones fans, and the incessant tour bus day-trippers from neighbouring (and not so neighbouring) destinations all played their…

Dalmatia Getting New Sports-Congress Centre Worth 3 Million Euros

When it comes to investments in Croatia, the vast majority of positive (alright, semi positive) stories regard investments in tourism, be they from domestic or foreign investors, but it isn't just regular old tourism in the sense of holiday makers and other leisure travellers that Croatia, and particularly Dalmatia, needs to place its focus on. With the current attempt to break free of the classic ''sunshine and sea'' tourism that Croatia, like many other Mediterranean countries has managed to box itself into and extend the tourist season with the idea of a 365 Croatia, the country needs all the help…
