August 2, 2020 - The corona couldn't get in the way of the Martinis Marchi annual summer bash, which was held under the 'Simply White' theme on Saturday night in Maslinica on the island of Solta.
Another year, another blowout by Martinis Marchi, whose annual summer party continues to cement itself as the hit of the season.
After attending my first summer soiree in the magical Maslinica back in 2017, I quickly learned it was an event that no other could rival - though Martinis manages to outdo themselves year after year. And while the disco dancing do of 2019 had me singing Abba songs for the weeks that followed, last night's Simply White theme hit the heart a bit harder than the rest.
How the Martinis team, led by Creative Director Marija Gamulin, was able to pull off such a spectacle in the corona era, is not only commendable, but is truly remarkable.
With a limited capacity of 100 guests, the 9th Martinis Marchi summer party was exclusive, intimate, and exceptional. Dancing around the standard party go-to's to ensure all measures were strictly adhered to penetrated this profound experience for all guests, one that is unparalleled when compared to the rest.
With the guest's safety and privacy at the core of each intricate detail, every element was executed to perfection to make for my favorite evening yet. I was happy to have my father by my side as my date.
It all began in the late afternoon with Beefeater Gin on the Martinis marina, where white-clad waitresses walked from one end of the marina to the other, serving guests and yacht owners a selection of Tom Collins, Negroni and Blue Lagoon cocktails. This made for the perfect pre-party, as we strolled around the town to escape the sizzling sun.
Just before sunset, we made our way back over to the marina for the official opening, where Martinis director Ivan Kuret greeted guests and shared why it was so crucial for them to hold the event this year.
Guests gathered at small cocktail tables, each adorned with a chilled bottle of Dom Kalebic posip and hors d'oeuvres.
The opening speech was followed by a live saxophone performance, which set the mood for the night.
The evening continued with a striking acrobatic ballet performance by local dancers, which captivated the crowd for almost ten minutes.
But then, the crown of the opening of the opening party - the Arileo Studio fashion show.
Arileo is composed of Marija and Jurica Piric, a fashion duo and married couple. Creating together since 2003, the pair has worked in the famous fashion houses Armani and Nitya, while Marija also worked for Emporio Armani. The stunning summer collection seized the eyes of everyone in the audience... my father included.
From the marina to the Martinis restaurant terrace, we were greeted with a cold glass of Mumm champagne.
We were then escorted into the garden, which was decorated in white, with all tables socially distanced according to corona measures.
Unlike in previous years, when the upper garden terrace was adorned with an all-you-can-eat buffet table, this year, each table was served individually by a careful waiter. We began with skuta cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, whipped butter, focaccia, seafood pate, and salad. This was followed by soup made of crab and ravioli filled with duck and truffles.
And this absolutely divine tuna.
Dinner did not go without entertainment, as the acrobatic dancers returned for a performance under the stars.
As guests made their way through more food, wine, and conversation, the night came to an end with a grand performance of Croatian tenors. The voices enhanced the already magical atmosphere and brought goosebumps to warm summer skin. As if we were in heaven.
A speedboat back to Split on the calm sea, glistening under a glowing full moon, was the pinnacle of the perfect evening.
A lit up Split Riva welcomed us home.
A big round of applause to Ivan Kuret, Marija Gamulin, and the entire Martinis Marchi team for succeeding in creating a truly unequaled spectacle in these trying times. To say you've outdone yourselves would be an understatement.
Just imagine what next year will bring!

August 2, 2020 - Earvin 'Magic' Johnson, the most famous number 32 in basketball, the tallest point guard in NBA history, and one of the most revolutionary basketball players of all time, has arrived in Split.
Slobodna Dalmacija writes that the trademark of the celebrated Los Angeles Lakers has decided to spend part of his summer vacation in Croatia with his friends and family, as is evidenced by his arrival on the mega yacht "Aquila", which stretches 85.6 meters long and is worth about 150 million US dollars.
On Friday, news spread through Split that Michael Jordan, perhaps the biggest basketball player to walk the globe and a brand of the Chicago Bulls, was coming to a famous restaurant in Split at around 8 pm. Photojournalists and journalists thus came together at the scheduled time to immortalize this historic photograph. But there was nothing from the photo, as Air Jordan never showed.
Only an hour or two later, information came that the initial story was wrong and that it was not Jordan coming to Split, but Magic Johnson.
In the end, the news turned out to be correct, which is evidenced by fan photos of the famous basketball player who was photographed in front of Aquila with Nina and Mario, employees of "Madura", a famous cafe on the West Coast, where many mega yachts park. You can see the photos here.
Break Time
Magic Johnson and teammate Kare Abdul - Jabbar ruled the world of basketball in the late '70s and '80s, when he won five NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Today, he is a very successful businessman, whose fortune is estimated at about a billion US dollars, so it is not surprising that he can rent a yacht that costs one million dollars a week.
In addition to titles with the Lakers, Magic won everything that can be won in basketball. He was the MVP of the NBA Finals three times, the MVP of the entire NBA League season three times, he played 12 NBA All-Star games and won the gold at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, when the then American "Dream Team" beat Croatia, led by Drazen Petrovic, Toni Kukoc, and Dino Rada in the final.
In addition to these accomplishments, Magic averaged 19.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and an average of 11.2 assists per game throughout his NBA career.

August 2, 2020 - Rijeka celebrated the Croatian Cup on Saturday, defeating Lokomotiva 1:0 in the final in Sibenik.
Tibor Halilovic scored the winning goal in the 76th minute. This is Rijeka's sixth cup title, while Lokomotiva is still without a trophy, suffering two defeats in the final.
Rijeka celebrated in a hard game with a goal by Halilovic, although Lokomotiva had better chances throughout the match. However, the club that has won the cup three times in the last four years proved once again they know how to seal the deal in crucial moments.
In a very careful first half, almost without a single chance, Lokomotiva almost reached the goal in the 42nd minute, but Tolic's shot was saved by goalkeeper Pandur.
In the second half, much better football was played, and already in the 52nd minute, Kastrati hit the post. In the 63rd minute, after Escoval's foul on Kastrati, referee Pejin awarded a penalty kick, but after the intervention of the VAR, Pejin changed his mind and awarded only a free-kick.
In the 76th minute, Rijeka scored from the first real chance. After a long action in which Pavicic found Tibor Halilovic, he easily hit the net from ten meters out.
Eight minutes before the end of the match, Grbic defended a dangerous header by Colak, and in the 93rd minute, Lokomotiva's Jakic hit the crossbar in the last chance to even the result.

"Rijeka is an institution, the club's management knows what it wants, the players and coaches have support, the city loves the club, we have great fans and when you have such a symbiosis, then something happens. Today we succeeded, the trophy is here," said the coach of Rijeka Simon Rozman in an interview for HRT after the final celebration.
"The week behind us is very emotional, we were preparing, we were only interested in the trophy. We also had a bit of sports luck, but the most important thing is that the trophy is there. It was hard, especially at the start, there were a lot of ups and downs, and we got up at the right time. I said not everything is ideal, but the trophy is there, and third place in the championship. In the end, I am very tired, the difficult season is behind us," added the Rijeka strategist.
Lokomotiva had a great season, but after second place in the championship, they failed to win the first trophy in club history.
"Congratulations to Rijeka on the trophy, but also to my team on a very good game. I think we did everything we could and that we looked good from the tactical side, but the ball didn't go into the goal today. It’s football and it needs to be accepted. I think we had extraordinary opportunities in the first half, in the second as well, but football is played for goals, Rijeka scored one more and everything is clean and clear. Congratulations to Rijeka," said Lokomotiva coach Goran Tomic.

Finance Minister Maric spoke for Dnevnik HRT about the budget, the economic situation in the rapidly approaching autumn, money for Croatia from the European Union and other topics.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 1st of August, 2020, the Croatian Government projected a budget deficit of 25 billion kuna and when asked what the latest data was and whether the forecasts would be in those dimensions, Minister Maric said that Croatia had achieved practically all of its financing needs with well-known programmes, reports HRT.
"Our needs, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, have increased from 30.5 billion kuna to 64 billion kuna. In circumstances such as the ones we're currently in, we can state with satisfaction that we've fulfilled all of our obligations for financing in 2020, Minister Maric emphasised. When asked how much the interest rates were in line with the expectations, Maric said that the seven-year bonds, at 0.75 percent, were on good terms.
''The two billion euros that followed in the international financial market mark one of the highest quality bonds we've issued in the international financial market on the investor interest book itself at 1.5 percent for 11 years, and these latest data refer sto maturities of 12-14 , 5 years, and the interest rates are between 0.25 and 0.50 percent. I think that these are good conditions in the given circumstances,'' Minister Maric emphasised.
A 9.4 percent drop is forecast for this year. In a month, the Croatian Government will come out with new projections based on all the information we have. Maric said that all the measures that were put into operation from the first day were aimed at preserving liquidity and preserving jobs.
"We've amortised that first wave in an adequate way, but there are still days ahead of us and the Government will follow the epidemiological picture and continue to do everything to continue the trend of preserving jobs and to start the recovery as soon as possible," said Minister Maric.
Maric said that challenges exist and that Croatia as a country must learn to deal with them, as it did in the first wave of the pandemic. 750 billion euros from EU funds is a great chance for Croatia, but also for the entire EU economy, and it is an opportunity to make a step forward for the domestic economy, but also for society as a whole, Zdravko Maric pointed out.
"Informal and formal consultations with the Commission and other relevant bodies on the programme will start in October. In April, all countries, including Croatia, are obliged to send a National Recovery Plan and in it, among other things, define both structural reforms and investment activities that should be the key determinants of spending and absorption of the part [of the money] related to the recovery plan and resilience,'' he said.
He pointed out that the basic idea at the national level is to create the necessary preconditions for the quality implementation of several strong and recognisable projects, and also not neglect balanced regional development as one of the postulates of the Republic of Croatia.
"As far as the private economy is concerned, we want to make the most of EU funds, so that they reach those who are key drivers of our economy and investments in an adequate way, either in the form of grants or in the form of quality loans," he stressed.
When asked when the minimum wage can be expected to increase and taxes to be reduced, Minister Maric said that work would begin on that after the summer break.
"As Minister of Finance, I advocate the maximum responsibility for taxpayers, which we've done in the past four years, and return to the path of a balanced budget as soon as possible," he said, adding that in parallel there will be greater absorption from the recovery fund.
He pointed out that the details will be known in autumn.

Croatia's tourism giant Valamar reported a drop in revenue of 81 percent amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but in spite of that, several positive results have come about.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 31st of July, 2020, in the first six months of this year, Valamar generated total revenues of 134 million kuna, or 81% less than it did back during the same period last year, as a result of the closure of tourist facilities from March to the end of May and significant disruptions to tourist flows caused by the global pandemic. The aforementioned factors continued to negatively affect the volume of business for Valamar in June.
In the first half of this year, Valamar actively managed the coronavirus crisis and launched action plans to stabilise its operations in time. The business was successfully "paused" on March the 15th, all jobs were preserved and Valamar was ready to welcome the opening of the season in June with modified products and services that increased the safety of guests and the quality of services.
The necessary liquidity for the company has been ensured until 2021 through plans for operational savings, investment savings, payment delays and agreements with investors. Operating costs were reduced by 61% compared to the same period last year, and the package of economic measures introduced the Croatian Government helped to preserve all jobs during the closure of Valamar's many facilities. Despite the crisis, Valamar Riviera confirmed its status as the best employer in Croatian tourism this year yet again, and took an impressive 6th place on the list of the best employers in all of Croatia.
All jobs were preserved within Valamar despite the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic
As of April the 1st, Valamar, with the support of its social partners, has been implementing the Pause, Restart programme, under which all employees who aren't working are provided with salary compensation in the amount of at least 60% of their regular salary, but not less than 4,250 kuna net per month. In the period from March to June, over 90% of Valamar's employees were on this ''pause'', for which the costs were jointly borne by the shareholders and the state, which subsidises this type of compensation. After the successful opening of most of Valamar's facilities and the start of the season, today, Valamar has more than 4,000 employees working again, while 1% of the large company's employees are still not working. Valamar will continue the Pause, Restart programme during the autumn and winter in order to preserve jobs until the spring of 2021, when business normalisation is expected.
Financial stability was maintained for further development
In addition to preserving jobs, Valamar's priority was to ensure sufficient liquidity to amortise the coronavirus crisis and continue development in the year 2021. In March, the decision to pay a dividend for 2019 was revoked, members of the Supervisory Board waived their fees, and the company management's salary was reduced by up to 30%. Additionally, policies and mechanisms of agreed payment deferral for 6 to 12 months to other stakeholders, including sales partners, suppliers, contractors, banks and others, have been introduced, with the aim of a balanced approach to crisis management and achieving business sustainability in times of crisis.
In agreement with the banks, Valamar has postponed the repayment of loans in 2020, and the finalisation of a new medium-term liquidity plan is expected in the coming days. Successfully acheived financial stability and an ownership-operational management model will enable full business start-up and continued development in 2021.
Investment management
The initially planned investment cycle for 2020 amounted to over 800 million kuna, but was reduced by 125 million kuna by the end of June. Valamar also temporarily slowed down the construction of the Valamar Pinea Collection Resort in Porec, Istria, the largest single investment in Croatian tourism worth a total of 790 million kuna, and postponed the completion of this investment. The investment in raising the quality and capacity of the Valamar Parentino hotel in Porec was successfully realised and the new family hotel received its first guests in the second half of July. The Supervisory Board of Imperial Riviera had given its prior consent for the continuation of investments in 2021 in the amount of 36 million kuna, which will complete the previous investments in Valamar Meteor hotels in Makarska and Valamar Parentino hotel in Porec, readying them for the 2021 tourist season.
The course of 2020's tourist season...
During June and July, Valamar gradually opened 21 hotels and resorts and all 15 campsites in eight Croatian Adriatic destinations, which are currently accommodating more than 30,000 guests, a remarkable success given the challenges facing tourism globally at the moment.
Croatia has a unique opportunity, given the high level of security, as well as its geographical in Europe, to impose itself as the most desirable destination in the Mediterranean and achieve strong growth in 2021. It is therefore necessary to preserve jobs in tourism and support business systems that have the ability and responsibility to start business back up again very quickly. With the support of all stakeholders, Valamar actively managed the crisis, launched the 2020 tourist season and ensured its quality position for a successful return to normal.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 31st of July, 2020, many tourists visiting the much loved Plitvice area have a brand new, very interesting tourist attraction at their disposal - the ability to hike along trails that follow the footsteps of wolves, bears and lynxes.
This area is rich in both flora and fauna, and by tracing the footsteps of animals, visitors will be able to get a unique insight into the activities of Lika's large wild animals.
This is a protected area managed by the Barac Caves Public Institution, and in addition to adventurers and animal lovers, this offer will certainly be interesting to walkers, recreationists, nature lovers and Nordic walkers.
"Back when we initially came to this idea and began with the arrangement of the trails, we had the visitors to Barac's caves in mind, to whom we offer additional, very attractive things to do before or after the tour of the cave itself. Going deep into the forest and following in the footsteps of wild animals is something that you will definitely remember for the rest of your life and that will connect you with nature forever,'' says director Tihana Ostrina.
The trails close to Plitvice are circular in shape, with a total length spanning 11.5 kilometres, with markings in the shape of paws, they are additionally marked with signposts at important intersections, and the start and finish is at the Barac caves picnic area.
The wolf trail is the shortest and the tour takes only twenty minutes to walk, so it is also suitable for novice walkers. Wolves, as well as humans, like to move in their "pack", and to trace this path it was necessary to follow the wolves who live in the area very closely.
The lynx trail is three kilometres long and follows in the footsteps of the Eurasian lynx, which is an endangered mammal species in Croatia. Large areas are needed and used for lynxes, and in that sense it is one of the most demanding and challenging species for conservation, and its presence is a sign of excellent preservation of the ecosystem. The movement of lynxes was recorded in the area of Barac's caves, and visitors to the new trail near Plitvice can discover the uniqueness of the forest ecosystem in which the lynx finds his occasional refuge.
The bear trail is designed for eager walkers who like a challenge and who have at least three hours at their disposal, as it is 7.5 kilometres long. The trail follows in the footsteps of the gorgeous brown bear, the giant of Croatia's mountain forests, the trail also hides some of the most beautiful lookouts and even naturally occurring refreshments from several forest springs and streams.
The new trails located close to the much loved Plitvice area of Lika pass through a larger complex of mixed forest that offers a home to a large number of plant and animal species. They also stretch over dry and semi-dry grasslands that represent important habitats for many rare and endangered plant and animal species. Due to the unfortunate abandonment of the traditional way of management, many mountain grasslands are disappearing due to the gradual overgrowing of woody and shrub species from nearby forests and are among the most endangered ecosystems in Croatia.
Visitors are invited to choose the trail according to their physical fitness level, to bring adequate footwear and clothing, and follow in the footsteps of some of Croatia's most majestic large animals.

August 1, 2020 - The Twitter campaign #zeneujavnomprostoru (women in the public space) has exploded over the last two weeks, detailing stories of sexual harassment and leading many ask, are women safe in Croatia?
Croatia is recognised as one of the safest countries in Europe. And rightly so. People leave their houses and their cars unlocked all the time. It’s an abnormality that there should be a murder or a rape here.
Speak to any female who moved here from another country and they can’t believe the difference; all speak of their initial surprise and, ultimately, their confidence in being able to walk unchaperoned around any Croatian village, town or city. Croatia is incomparably safe, particularly when judged against somewhere like the UK, where you’re lucky to get through a weekend without hearing reports of one or multiple rapes.
But, just because ex-pats feel liberated in their new lives here and you almost never hear of rape, that doesn’t tell the whole story. By and large, though women are free from physical attack and brutal rape by a stranger here in Croatia, that certainly doesn’t mean we can't ask are women safe in Croatia from sexual harassment.
2019’s annual report by the Ombudsperson for Gender Equality in Croatia stated that, in the last few years, the number of complaints they received about sexual harassment “mainly in the area of labour and employment” had risen considerably.
And, in the past two weeks, Twitter has exploded in response to a campaign started by a women’s rights activist in Rijeka, Marinella Matejčić, who created the hashtag #zeneujavnomprostoru (women in the public space). So far, the campaign has received 4865 responses – retweets, people using the hashtag or women from Croatia (and some from Bosnia and Serbia) submitting stories. Matejčić has been interviewed by all of the leading Croatian portals, Balkan Insight and even the BBC about the unexpected size to which the campaign has grown.
“We already knew that harassment was widespread in public places, the workplace and so on,” says Matejčić, who attributes much of the widespread problem to Croatia still being a patriarchal society. “But, we didn’t expect we’d be able to encourage so many women to share their stories with us. I’m so grateful to those that did.”
Are women safe in Croatia? Marinella Matejčić, the women's rights campaigner from Rijeka who created the #zeneujavnomprostoru (women in the public space) hashtag © Martina Šalov
“Most of the stories are about harassment,” she told TCN, although she also detailed some stories recounted about sexual behaviour towards minors. “That was the goal; to highlight that there is sexism and harassment happening all around us. We tolerate it because it’s part of the culture from where we came.”
It’s difficult to believe this horrible phenomenon exists when you’re a foreigner who feels so safe in Croatia. And when you’re a man. But, in preparation for writing these words, I asked every woman sat at my table. Each had at least one or several stories to tell, of being shouted at in the street, inappropriately touched. Two women from Zagreb both said that aroused men had pressed up against them on a packed tram. While they were on their way home from school!
“That’s normal here”, said one.
"So, if it’s normal here, does that mean you’re ok with it?”
“Certainly not!”
“It’s not so easy to get everyone to listen when you complain about women having nasty things said or done to them in the street or at work,” says Matejčić. “Some people just don’t see it as harassment. We’ve had quite the backlash. Some people say that women are just being hysterical about this, that they just can’t take a compliment. But, there’s a difference in being offered a compliment and the unwelcome harassment women receive in the street, on public transportation, or in the workplace.”
The dismissive opinions Matejčić details stem from a place of supreme arrogance and misunderstanding. If you want to know about racism, listen to the stories of a Romani family or a black man. If you want to understand homophobia, listen to a gay man or a lesbian. If you want to assess the genuine level of sexual harassment that exists, it is women whose stories need to be heard. Ignorant men have absolutely no place in this discussion other than to respectfully listen.
These problems certainly do not exist only in Croatia. Women are treated as second class citizens in many countries around the world, in many places the level of harassment is much worse. It is perhaps no bad thing that reports of sexual harassment have sharply risen here. Croatia is changing. And for the better. But there’s still some way to go before the catcalls, comments and inappropriate physical behaviour is as reviled as it deserves to be.
“I don’t think that it’s happening more,” says Matejčić, when asked to comment on the Croatian ombudsperson’s report. “I just think more women are finally coming forward to report it.”
ZAGREB, Aug 1, 2020 - According to the eVisitor tourist check-in and check-out system, Croatia recorded 2.44 million tourist arrivals and 18.60 million overnight stays in July, which are respective increases of 53% and 61% compared with July last year.
The figures cover tourists staying in commercial and non-commercial accommodation as well as the nautical charter, the Croatian Tourist Board (HTZ) said.
Foreign tourists generated 2.13 million arrivals (50% of the result recorded in July 2019) and 15.70 million overnight stays (58% of the result of July last year), while domestic tourists generated 325,000 arrivals (91% of the arrivals recorded in July 2019) and 2.90 million overnight stays (81% of the overnight stays recorded in July 2019).
The largest number of overnight stays was generated by German tourists (4.43 million overnight stays, or 87% of the overnight stays they generated in July 2019), ahead of Slovenians (3.44 million; 88%), Croatians (2.90 million; 81%), Poles (1.60 million; 79%), and Czechs (1.42 million; 72%).
According to the number of overnight stays, the leading destinations in July were Vir (711,000), Rovinj (619,000), Medulin (553,000), Novalja (486,000) and Mali Losinj (475,000).
About 780,000 tourists are currently staying in Croatia, including 200,000 Germans, 135,000 Slovenians, 130,000 Croatians, 74,000 Poles and 46,000 Czechs. Most of them are staying in Vir, Rovinj, Medulin, Crikvenica and Porec.
In the first seven months of this year, Croatia recorded 4.11 million tourist arrivals and 26.34 million overnight stays.
"Considering the circumstances, these are excellent results and a good announcement for August. We will intensify promotional activities in Germany, Austria, Great Britain and Italy, which are very important markets for our tourist industry where Croatia is listed as a safe country," HTZ director Kristjan Stanicic said.
He stressed the importance of compliance with epidemiological measures so that Croatia would keep its status as a safe tourist destination and make the most of this year's tourist season.
ZAGREB, Aug 1, 2020 - Deputy Prime Minister Boris Milosevic said on Saturday that he will attend the August 5 commemoration of Operation Storm in Knin as a cabinet member, a Croatian Serb aware of the burden of the war legacy, because he believes the time has come to stop hatred and start building a culture of peace.
Writing on his Facebook page, Milosevic said he is going to Knin because he believes that 25 years after the war it is necessary to stop hatred and war which, unfortunately, for many is not over.
"Children of Serb ethnicity know this best because in their schools they have to endure stigma and feel the guilt just because they are Serbs," Milosevic said.
"I am going because I want to make their future easier. I am going because I think the time is ripe for a policy of understanding and respect to prevail over a policy of hatred," he added.
Milosevic said that during Operation Storm he had been in his native Sibenik, worrying about his father who had been mobilised as a Croatian army soldier, for his friends who were in the Croatian army, and for his relatives who were on the other side.
He said it was difficult for him to make this decision because of his personal family tragedy as his paternal grandmother had been shot dead from close range in the village of Bribirske Mostine in the wake of Operation Storm.
"The murderer was identified accidentally because of his own arrogance, believing that no one would investigate the murder of a Chetnik (Serb) woman, as he himself put it. He was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison and got out after 3.5 years following a presidential pardon," Milosevic wrote.
Milosevic said that Operation Storm is not just a military and police operation but also "an enormous collective trauma". For Croats, it is a symbol of the start of long-awaited peace and cessation of occupation, while for Serbs it is a trauma of an exodus, suffering, fear, uncertainty and the impossibility of returning to their homes.
He said he is aware that his attendance in Knin will not change the opposed views on Operation Storm among the majority on both sides, but that he is willing to accept any gesture aimed at promoting tolerance and mutual respect so that "we can confirm ourselves as a democratic society that can achieve co-existence and prosperity regardless of any differences, including those in interpreting our common past."
"Building an atmosphere of reconciliation and dialogue in which we as society must recognise and accept all the victims regardless of their ethnicity, is much more important than my presence in Knin," Milosevic said.
ZAGREB, Aug 1, 2020 - Deputy Prime Minister Davor Bozinovic on Saturday attended the 29th annual commemoration for the defenders of Dalj, saying their deaths were a tragic but proud moment of the Homeland War which showed the firmness of those who defended their country with the strength of heart and true patriotism.
He said that "in 1991, before the formation of the Croatian army, police forces played a very significant part in resisting the enemy."
"The police officers of this station were helped by members of the National Guard Corps, Civil Protection and the people of Dalj," Bozinovic said, adding that one tank shell fired today in 1991 killed 20 police, 15 guards and four Civil Protection members.
"But they didn't think that the atrocity they committed here would be one of the decisive events for raising the morale of the Croatian people in defending and liberating their country."
We should be proud of the Croatian courage, perseverance and strength of unity because this tragedy determined the further course of the Homeland War, Bozinovic said.
The defence of the Dalj police station was one in a series of confirmations of the dedication of the Croatian police to the enforcement of the law and the preservation of the constitutional and legal order, democratic values and the integrity of our country, he added.
Wreaths were laid outside the police station and Mass was celebrated for the victims at the Dalj church.
Reporters asked Bozinovic, who also serves as interior minister, about war crimes investigations and the war missing.
He said the investigations and the search for the missing was a priority of the government, the relevant ministries and other institutions. "There is intensive inter-departmental cooperation which has already delivered results and I'm sure it will do so in the future as well. When it comes to Dalj, criminal complaints have been filed and they are being processed."
Honouring all innocent war victims is a civilisational achievement
Bozinovic was asked to comment on Homeland Movement MP Ivan Penava's statement that this year's Grubori commemoration was a political trade-off and equating the 1995 Operation Storm and individual crimes.
He said the government had been continuously working on building political relations in Croatia.
"A responsible policy should create conditions so that we can turn to future challenges as successfully and with as little baggage from the past as possible. Talking about equating is groundless. The Storm anniversary is one of the most important dates in Croatia and will remain so, so one can't talk about any equating, nor is it appropriate to talk about that in that way. Honouring all war victims is a civilisational achievement."
