The Professor and the New Prime Minister? And How Did the Island Vote

By 12 September 2016

Professor Frank John Dubokovich is one of the most intelligent and engaging people I know. Always full of life, he knows more people than I have ever met in my life, and if you have not been invited to visit his restaurant in Pitve, then you have not really visited the island.

And so it was a couple of years ago over morning coffee, that The Professor crossed the square from The Office to greet some politician I had not heard of. The face is about to get a lot more familiar on the world stage, as HDZ President Andrej Plenkovic is the clear favourite to become Croatia's next Prime Minister, after a strong showing by his party at yesterday's elections. Did The Professor foresee all this, and was he negotiating a ministerial position - Minister of Culture, perhaps, so he could spread the word about his beloved Hvar dialects - here is lesson one below. On a more serious note, the final results are in for how the districts of the island of Hvar voted - all the information is below for Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa and Sucuraj. There were big swings from SDP to HDZ in both Hvar Town and Jelsa.
