High Costs, Seasonality in Croatia Hinder Wizz Air from Expanding Operations

On December 10, 2018, Ex Yu Aviation spoke with Wizz Air CEO Jozsef Varadi about why the Hungarian low-cost airline has such a limited presence in Croatia. Citing seasonality and high costs, Varadi said: “Unfortunately, if you look at the Croatian coastline it is a very seasonal business. It is intact for a few months and then sort of dies out for the rest of the year. Zagreb Airport is quite in a similar situation as Belgrade Airport in terms of costs, so I think it is a high-priced airport environment with fluctuating demand. Should the costs come down, I think they would…

Advent on Pag: Former Salt Warehouse Transforms into Ice Rink

Pag, as a popular summer island destination, might not strike you as a place to go in winter at all. Despite that, the Advent on Pag festivities have transformed the island from summer getaway to winter wonderland.  As Morski writes on the 10th of December, 2018, the very first artificial ice rink ever to be built on the island has been constructed, and to add to the authenticity of Pag and its history, it has been placed in one of the island's former salt warehouses. ''This is the central part of Advent on Pag, a gift for the children and…

Experience On!

Experiential travel or experiential tourism is the global movement in the tourism industry, especially in its higher echelons, in its luxury segments. Tourists that seek travel experiences rather than traditional resort vacations, therefore prefer to be called travelers, rather than tourists. Ideally, they would like to be described as travelers on a journey of immersion into unknown cultures, gastronomies, languages, relationships and landscapes. Also, they do not consider themselves to be luxury travelers, but affluent travelers, as their money is spent on personal bettering, not wasted on material products meant to show status and show their riches. It is rather…

Ryanair Announces Flights to Split and Dubrovnik, Both Airports Clueless?

As Ryanair announces flights to Split and Dubrovnik, it appears that neither destination airport got the memo. As we reported recently, the largest European low-cost airline, Ryanair, announced that it will launch flights from Dublin to Split and Dubrovnik as of next summer, but it seems nobody at either Split or Dubrovnik airport knows much about it. As Josip Bohutinski/VL/Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 4th of December, 2018, more strangely still, Ireland's popular Ryanair has already begun selling tickets for these flights which will commence on June the 1st, and be in operation until the 25th and 26th of October,…

Winter Wonderland at Plitvice Lakes

December 4, 2018 - Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, the Plitvice Lakes are Croatia's biggest, oldest and most visited national park. Hundreds of thousands of people visit the Plitvice Lakes each year, and the vast majority flocks to the park during summer. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that – au contraire! – it is an amazing place to visit during all four seasons. However, if you happen to be nearby sometime between January and March, you definitely don't want to miss out on winter wonderland at Plitvice. The best part of visiting Croatia's most…

45 New Hotels for Dalmatia and 1,500 Hotel Beds for Split in 2019?

There has never been a more significant investment boom in the hotel sector, especially in southern Croatia. At dozens of sites all over Dalmatia, construction is either underway or nearing completion on more than 45 new hotels which will bring about 6,000 brand new hotel rooms and 13,000 new beds on the market in 2019 alone, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on December 4, 2018.  The total investment in tourism for 2019 is estimated at EUR 1.050 billion, or EUR 100 million more than this year. Of this amount, one third will be invested in four Dalmatian counties, or EUR 314 million…

Flights to Croatia 2019: Ryanair Announces Dublin to Split and Dubrovnik

December 3, 2018 - Eleven years after entering the Croatian market in Zadar, a great addition to the flights to Croatia 2019 story: Ryanair to Split and Dubrovnik. Flights to Croatia 2019 just got easier for Irish tourists (and the growing Croatian diaspora in Ireland), as Ryanair has announced two new routes to the Adriatic for next summer - Dublin to Split and Dubrovnik, reports the Irish Independent. TCN reported 3 weeks ago that Ryanair was in discussions with Split and Zagreb, while the Irish carrier has been talking to Dubrovnik for some time. The sticking point for both Split…

Advent in Korcula Brings Ice Skating to a Dalmatian Island

December 3, 2018 - I wonder what Marco Polo would have made of this - ice skating on a Dalmatian island: Meet Advent in Korcula. Having lived on the sunniest island in Europe just a little to the north of Korcula for 13 years, most of it with two young daughters, I can really appreciate how exciting this will be for the local kids. While children on the mainland play with snow and go ice skating in the winter months, such things are what Dalmatian island children can only dream of.  Until now... Advent in Korcula has been announced with…
