Stari Grad Best European Destination Nominee: 5. Celebrities

By 4 January 2017

With 38 days to go until final voting for Best European Destination 2017 on the European Best Destinations website, we continue our look at Croatian nominee, Stari Grad, through 42 photos in 42 days.

Hvar, the celebrity island - the holiday choice of Tom Cruise, Beyonce, Bono, Demi Moore and Prince Harry, among many others. And while most of the celebrities are to be found in Hvar Town, it was not always so, and that will soon change again...

From the arrival of Emperor Franz Josef himself in 1875, to the visit of the recently abdicated King of England in 1936 (as Edward and Mrs. Simpson lunched at the modern-day Jurin Podrum), Stari Grad is no stranger to royal visitors.

The United States has no royalty of course, but the closest equivalent was also a visitor in Stari Grad, as Mrs JFK herself sailed into Stari Grad in 1964, accompanied by a Yugoslav patrol boat, before she went water-skiing. Her visit was reported in the American media.

And why will more celebrities be spotted in Stari Grad? With the announced opening of the luxury Four Seasons resort (120 5-star rooms and 60 villas) due to open in 2019, Stari Grad will be one of the top luxury destinations on the Adriatic, a perfect choice for the rich and famous to relax in.
