The Hvar-Stari Grad Road as It Once Was - in 1972

By 12 November 2017

It is easy to forget how much Hvar has changed in a short space of time, and while some people complain about the island's infrastructure at times, it is a lot better than it was in the recent past.

Take this wonderful photo posted by Prosper Maricic in the excellent Facebook group, Old Photographs and Postcards of Hvar Town, which I encourage you to follow if you are interested in historical Hvar - some amazing photos are contained within.

The shot is apparently taken on a journey from Hvar Town to Milna in 1972, just 45 years ago, along the same route which is home today to the fast Hvar to Stari Grad road. Before that road opened in (I think) 2001, the main connection between Hvar Town and the ferry and rest of the island was via the old road over the top, through Brusje and Selca. That must have been fun with all the caravans and impatient drivers.

So progress has been made in terms of infrastructure and accessibility, but there is something wonderfully charming about this snapshot of Hvar as it once was.
